heard on the radio just now, this thing will turn into a "monster" in the gulf.........This is NOT good. Another Katrina??
As you can see it is supposed to stay a hurricane from here on out..........
this from the wires:
Hurricane Gustav has moved inland over southwestern Haiti is now a minimal category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. Gustav is moving toward the west-northwest at 10 mph.
Gustav may briefly weaken below hurricane strength tonight before moving offshore and back into the Caribbean, where it is forecast to regain strength and reach Category 2 status early Thursday morning. Gustav will then track toward the west-northwest over the Caribbean and is forecast to become a major category 3 hurricane by Friday afternoon with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph. Gradual strengthening is then forecast as it continues to move toward the northwest. Oceanic and atmospheric conditions will be very conducive for rapid intensification during this time and an increase to category 4/category 5 status is not out of the question.
It is looking less likely that Gustav will track toward the Yucatan Peninsula and more likely that the storm will track into the southeastern and toward the central Gulf of Mexico this weekend. Intensity and track forecasts are highly uncertain beyond this point. However, it looks increasingly likely that Gustav will be at the very least a major category 3 hurricane bearing down somewhere along the U.S. Gulf Coast early next week.

Maybe this will convince people that nature doesn't want New Orleans rebuilt. And no, I'm not generally that cruel to people but I'm sick of the .gov using my tax money to fund things that are of no benefit to me. Or at least to the whole country. Giving that much money to rebuild a city that was largely .gov funded to begin with is throwing good money after bad.

<- tries to predict hurricane paths.
<- usually wrong.
Lets see.
No strong high pressures in the area.
High pressure / cold front starts dropping down from the great northwest by Thursday.
Hurricane Gustav not even in the Gulf of Mexico at that time. Wobbles a bit west - which the track already shows.
Hurricanes can't run directly into high pressure zones - like running uphill. Gustav hooks around the High pressure and starts north about Sunday or so. Might hook around enough to tag MS/AL/FL panhandle. Might not.
Too early to tell.

I wonder how many people would stay if ordered to evacuate again? I bet some would stay and blame bush again.
It would be sweet if New Orleans was hammered again. I would gladly take a hard hit in Baton Rouge if it meant wiping Nahlins off the map. My guess is it hits the Florida panhandle.
I hear Lootie is watching the forecast with cautious optimism...

If living in Florida has taught me anything, its that weather forecasts don't mean ****. It could be a category 5+ that annihilates NO, or it could dissipate into a few days of light showers for Miami. Don't start taking them too seriously until the storm is pretty darn close. The media is itching for hurricane-scare forecasting.
On another note- there is a hair salon here in town called "Chocolate Salon" or something like that. My girlfriend is convinced it is called that because they give out candies to the customers. She's so cute.
Let's see what happens when it get's past Cuba, but if the current 5 day path holds true, it could land just west of New Orleans. And there are a pair of depressions being tracked behind Gustav. Next 2 or 3 weeks are going to be interesting.

Please God not again. I'm not a religious man, but I'm asking for some serious divine intervention on this one. We can't take another one yet, we aren't close to rebuilding from Katrina and the NO levee system is not much better off than before. Not to mention that most of my favorite fishing spots are hanging on by a thread and the erosion from another storm would surely finish them off. It's still way out there and alot can change.
I also fear for our cajun culture. Many of these simple people will not rebuild again if mother nature appears to be hell bent on their destruction. They would assimilate into another culture and MUCH of whats great about my state would be lost forever.
Please pray that this thing hits a largely unpopulated area wherever it makes landfall.
Nice...more NOLA drama. Good thing is, we have a kick-ass pro-gun competent Governor in office and there ain't no taking our guns this time. Suck on that, Nagin. :2gun:

I hate to say it, but In New Orleans case I'm starting to agree. Just keep the French quarter as a party destination, after all it's one of the few spots in NO that is still above sea level. We've fought a strong fight for a long time, but a cost benefit analysis is in order if this hits N.O.. Now for the rest of the state - I couldn't disagree more.
Remember the lower ninth ward and surrounding ghettos were some of the last places to be inhabited in NO because of their vulnerability to flooding. For these reasons mostly poor people live there. Old NO for the most part is above sea level and is somewhat less vulnerable. This is the reason that the rich white people always get blamed for blowing up the levies every time it floods - "It's discrimination man"

I really feel for the Haitians. What a poor country. Lets see if they get FEMA trailers, debit cards, and gov't handouts.
At 8 PM, the eye of Hurricane Gustav was located along the southwestern Haitian coastline, or about 155 miles to the southeast of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. This position is also about 700 miles to the southeast of Key West and 1360 miles to the southeast of New Orleans. Maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph and Gustav is moving towards the northwest around 7 mph. Gustav made landfall earlier today in southwestern Haiti with sustained winds near 90 mph.
Computer model guidance remains in agreement on Gustav's path through the next 3 days as a ridge of high pressure aloft builds over the Bahamas and south Florida. This weather feature is expected to steer Gustav on a westerly course once the hurricane fully emerges into Windward Passage tonight. Gustav should remain over very warm waters in between Cuba and Jamaica on Wednesday, and rapid strengthening is forecast to commence by Thursday. Gustav is expected to be at Category 3 strength on Friday when the cyclone potentially impacts the Cayman Islands.
The strength of the ridge aloft over Florida later this week will likely determine when and where Gustav enters the Gulf of Mexico. A stronger ridge could keep Gustav on a westward course towards Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, while a weaker ridge could allow Gustav to turn west-northwestward towards western Cuba. Based on the latest official forecast, only the lower Florida Keys and the western Florida panhandle coast fall within the average track forecast error cone through the next 5 days. It is too early to speculate whether Gustav will change its expected west-northwest course after the hurricane enters the Gulf of Mexico this weekend.
Attached to this email are the 8 PM advisory graphic, the latest tropical storm and hurricane force wind speed probabilities, and the evening computer model track forecasts through the next 5 days. Keep in mind that "XTRP" is not a computer model but is based solely on the current trajectory of Gustav and "CLP5" is the climatology model based on history rather than current conditions.

After visiting a few times this year the riff raff is certainly back. Not in the rediculous numbers like before, but I saw planty of wanna be rap stars at Mardi Gras. They still have bad neighborhoods and ghettos - Just a little smaller than before.
The evacuation was hell for Katrina. One of my businesses is on I10 and it was bumper to bumper with a 4 hour driving taking more like 20. Cars running out of gas, breaking down.....the only good thing I can say was that people were truly patient and for the most part helped each other. That was with all the idiots that stayed. I don't think many will stay this time so if this thing is headin my way I really dread the evacuation. It will be as bad as before or worse IMO.
Some of the guys here prepare for scenarios like this by stockpiling food, fuel, and many other supplies. They make escape plans, back up locations, back up supplies.... Before Katrina I would have called these guys paranoid, but I have really learned something and I see myself doing things now that I would not have done before. Things like filling every gas tank I own, having literally hundreds of batteries and candles, having a fully stocked pantry with plenty on nonperishable food items, having hundreds of gallons of fresh water, having plenty of ammo. These are all things I am doing far in advance this time. I have been made fun of by my family for going over the top, but I don't feel as though I am, on the contrary; I feel as though I am ensuring the safety of my family if one of these things does come my way this hurricane season. Even though Gustov may miss you by hundreds of miles, if you live on the gulf coast it behooves you to be prepared...........and no I don't think I'm paranoid.

That's exactly what the feds have been asking people to do since 9/11; everybody needs to have atleast 72 hrs of supplies on hand all the time. It really pissed me off a while back when some nasty winter storm stranded people on the highway in, I think, PA a winter or two ago. National Guardsmen had to go out there and hand out water bottles and food because the sheep couldn't think far enough in front of their nose that maybe, just maybe, something might go wrong and it would be a good idea to have a little extra supplies around.

Dinty Moore of course.... their beef stew is nearly a full meal, it's cheap, has a long shelf life, requires no added water and requires little fuel to cook - not to mention it's almost good enough to eat in normal times.
It's my primary hurricane / zombie invasion food stock.

The people you are referring to were stranded on the highway because of a traffic accident. The local districts dropped the ball, by not getting their plows and salt trucks out on the roads until after the problem happened.
This highway in question was a divided highway with no exits for the traffic to detour around the original accident. Once the motorists approached the accident, there was no place for them to go.
They waited for so long, many of the cars ran out of gas. It was either run your car for heat or freeze to death.

Hopefully when the folks evacuate New Orleans, they can stop off in Houston and pick up their cousins/relatives who have been waiting around since Katrina and keep on evacuating elsewhere.
I wonder if the jack booted thugs will confiscate firearms? And please, spare me the tripe about how they passed laws to prevent that, as it was against the law the first time the nazis did it.
Hopefully when the folks evacuate New Orleans, they can stop off in Houston and pick up their cousins/relatives who have been waiting around since Katrina and keep on evacuating elsewhere.

Of course they are going to need some more govt handouts to get them through the emotional stress they are going through having to leave Houston.
Id love to say " Soyanara Sukka New Orleans" but living in the Caribbean and now west coastal Florida has taught me that it aint over until its over....it can turn on a dime almost and nothing is safe until its history.
This time of year is really quite depressing. ( excuse the pun)

I am just amazed at how WRONG the meteorologists have been so far this year. They were wrong about 10 times while trying to predict Fay's course and they were dead wrong again today.
Our local weather guy was on last nights ten o'clock news showing many of his models that were all in agreement that Gustov was going to hit the Yucatan. These were not the models on what I consider reputable sites like weather underground or the national hurricane center. Now Just 12 hours later he is showing his same models that now show a hit near the Mississippi / Alabama border. I'm to the point where I'm not even going to worry until 2-3 days out.
I think the problem is that people WANT to know what the storm is going to do so the weathermen just babble on with worthless information while the friggin storm is still about a week away. Even on the 5 day cone the storms only fall within the cone 2/3's of the time. The other 1/3 of the time the storm does something completely unpredicted.
My point is it's really too early to worry. All us Gulf Coast residents can do is go on with our lives and be prepared for the worst, but don't go around all week worrying. When this thing gets a couple of days away and it still looks like we may get hit then I'll make my last minute preparations.
honestly I am starting to feel better about Gustov. The projected track keeps moving further east and going by past storms they usually keep moving further that way with every forecast. You never know, but Florida may end up getting this one.

oh yeah!! Fay gave my rain gauge 4 inches!!!! WOOOT!!! Our local lake is only 3 feet from full summer pool right now. Lanier, the big lake that feeds most of Atlanta proper is still down 15 feet, but it is up about 3 feet.
I see Gustav's track for landing is more to the east, on the LA/MS border. So yeah, Florida MAY be ground zero. At least the panhandle anyway.

Every model is different, they have no idea where this one is going yet. I have stopped looking at it until after the LSU game. I've done all my preparations and I'm gonna stop worrying for a little while and have some fun.
The South Carolina game is on now.

Man alive, I thought Fay just paid us a visit. I'm in my little tin-can shack at work and nearly had to haul ass outta here. Horizontal rain, hail, lightning like all get out. It sounded like a damn freight train running right over my head.
Maybe you and the weather harpy should compare notes.

I would not panic yet. Get prepared to leave, call an inland hotel/motel for reservations and watch what the storm does.
Too many people pack up and leave without a plan. Hotel reservations only require a credit card. You can always cancel if the storm goes the other way.
Good advice. If you are going to bug out you need a place to sleep for a couple of nights, make it a party and have fun, that's what we do.

I'm 80% complete now. All but two windows are boarded up (for safety). Just the anklebiter stuff now.
All yard stuff is stacked outside the garage waiting to be pulled in tomorrow (15 minutes work).............
Gun cases are out and ready to be filled.........
Important papers, jewelry, PMs and irreplaceable momentos are out and at the ready...........
Still need to chain a boat and utility trailer together, flatten and chock the tires............
Last minute grab list still needs to be done........
Bags of kids clothes, favorite blankets, pillows..........(you can't prepack that stuff)
Briefed my good neighbors across the street (they must stay) about the 500 lbs of ice in my machine, some sacrificial preps they can raid if needed, straight 30 generator oil, extension cords, fans, window unit a/c, etc., to help them through
Just spoke to a bud of mine who's dad was the Parish President (think county commisioner or mayor) when Kat and Rita went through. He sat in on the computer simulations a back then. Rita, shifted east like this projected path, would put 4-6 feet of water in my home in the simulation......I'm 8 feet above sea level.
I'm just leaving and not looking back. Whatever happens, happens. If the worst.
I wanted to leave at 3am Saturday morning but got overruled. We leave tomorrow about 5pm.

Funny thing is, where I live, used to be considered "safe", "high ground", "inland". This area has not flooded in modern history.
But, our coastline has eroded so badly that with each passing storm, the flooding gets further and further north.

Yeah, ideally. But I believe we'll be ok. I'm still 5 days out from the storm.
I've never been caught in the Sierra-Hotel-India-Tango
Evacs haven't been called yet and I don't believe they will until sometime saturday. Wal Mart just caught fire this afternoon. I'm the first in my neighborhood to be boarded up. There's still stacks and stacks of plywood at Home Depot.
BOL has 2 acres for the dogs and a pool for the kids. Casinos 20 minutes down the road for dad.

We've got each other's cells. They've got the alarm code to get into my house. Plan to touch base. Cell towers worked after Kat until the diesel/batteries started to run out.
I might oughta leave them my satellite phone...........
We're finally doing our hurricane preps at work tomorrow. Setting up the NIMS command center structure in the AM.....Damn it! Again, I was scheduled for leave next week! the same situation with Katrina and and Rita.......:steamed:
Gassed up both vehicles, got 20 gallons of gas yesterday for the generator @ $3.41 a gallon...it's up to $3.55 today.....Gotta get the generator out Saturday, run it, and start boarding up! Capped off the canned good supply tonight for the aftermath, just in case. Gotta pull three boats outta the water behind the house Saturday morning, put all the crap in the barn again......
My wife is saying she's gonna ride this one out, but, she'll probably head to Dallas to our son's house. I'll be stuck here on duty, as usual, part of the commitment to duty I guess. I've got 125 staff under me I'm responsible for so, I'll definately be there if Gustav heads here.

New Orleans FINALLY ordered an evacuation. With the amount of Federal resources that were put in there over the past few days and the advance warning, these folks have no excuse. The truly smart ones got out after the last one hit. If the forecasts are correct, this storm will make Katrina look like a spring shower. I heard somewhere, it may have been here, that 80% of NOLA has no car and no ability to get out of there on their own. Hard to believe. You can bet your bottom dollar FEMA will be footing the hotel bill for most of those, just like before. I think several in Atlanta were still milking the system for hotel fees up until like the first part of this year. Nothing on the web about flying busloads of people out, but it is still early
Hoping to avoid the 2005 spectacle of desperate city residents crammed into the New Orleans Superdome, the government has lined up hundreds of buses and trains to evacuate 30,000 people who cannot leave on their own.
About 1,500 Louisiana National Guard troops and 1,500 police officers are in New Orleans to oversee the evacuation -- twice the level seen during Katrina.
Thousands lined up to board buses, with no knowledge of their eventual destination. So far, about 1,200 people have left the city by bus, and another 1,500 by train, Nagin said, with about 20,000 people requesting evacuation assistance.

I agree, time to let it go. It isn't the first time in history a city was lost to the elements. It especially makes no sense to have a welfare state in a hurricane zone below sea level.
You're right, it is all about location... which is the very reason why it is important to the rest of the nation. NOLA has the busiest port system in the U.S., processing more gross tonnage than other cities. Likewise, this country is Dependant on NOLA for it's oil infrastructure.
Logistically, NOLA is very important to the rest of the nation.

The city is unimportant in the big picture. 21% of our oil is refined on the coast.
I heard on the news, they are busing New Orleans residents to airfields, loading those buses in Air Force transport planes and flying them, still in the buses, inland.
How many planes could they possibly be using when the average bus holds sixty people?
You heard wrong. I do get a laugh out of hearing something so absurd and that there are those gullible enough to believe it. I also have an acquaintance in Nigeria that can make folks very rich if they only send him some goodfaith money.

2.8 million barrels per day in NOLA, second only to the state of TX.
And, as mentioned previously, it is the busiest port system. In many ways, this country is Dependant on NOLA.
As of 8pm EDT Gustav is just 5mph shy of a category 5 hurricane. Winds are at 150mph, category 5 is winds of 155mph and over.

Well now genius, considering the billions of dollars already wasted on inferior levees, Fema cash cards, and three year long motel stays, what makes this story any more fantastic or hard to believe?

I heard somewhere, it may have been here, that 80% of NOLA has no car and no ability to get out of there on their own. Hard to believe. You can bet your bottom dollar FEMA will be footing the hotel bill for most of those, just like before. I think several in Atlanta were still milking the system for hotel fees up until like the first part of this year. It still may be going on. Who knows.
FEMA is still footing the bill for motel rooms in Gulfport & Biloxi to the tune of $600.00 per month. Three years after Katrina.
I am beyond sick of abuse of the "assistance system".
