Jason Boland and the Stragglers new album "Comal County Blues" came out today. Unfortunately Jason was scheduled for throat surgery today, a surgery that will keep him from touring and earning an income for several months. As you can imagine it is tough for a band to promote an album without being able to tour.
They have been the best country band on the planet for years now. They have remained independent so they can continue to put out their music the way they and their fans want. These guys live just a few miles up the road from me and are the nicest most approachable people you could ever meet. If you love country music, REAL country music, not that top 40 pop-country sellout ****, then check out Jason Boland and the Stragglers and grab one of their albums.

Done.
Funny that I recognize most of the areas/places they sing about. :wavey:
Sounds like he needs a Rich, Young, Dumb, Nymphomaniac

"The best country band on Earth..."
Is that like "the most reliable Taurus semi-auto" or "the smartest Penthouse Pet?"
All kidding aside, best of luck to Jason. If I didn't hate country music, I would buy his album to show support.

Awesome!!!! You're actually pretty cool, despite what the guys in CopTalk say.* Thanks for showing these guys some love.
He preaches the gospel when he says "It's the only place made colder, in the middle of June, by the endless stream of strangers, brought by the summer moon." This place sucks during the summer. Except for the eye candy. That part ain't bad but as soon as I pass the river crossings a few times and take in all the half nakedness, I want them bastiches out of my county.
I do know all the places he's talking about. When he says "Stop and tell Doug hello" he is referring to Doug Moreland who lives in Manchaca between San Marcos and Austin.

Jason is a great guy! I've had the pleasure of sharing a beer or two with him, Roger (lead guitarist) and Jeremy (old fiddle player) a few times. They are great guys and really have brought the country back into country music. I like all of his music but think his first album "Pearl Snaps" was pure gold! I hope he recovers quickly and still has the distinctive voice we have all come to love!
Prayers for recovery sent...

This is from his myspace page...
It's a week of extreme news for Jason Boland and the Stragglers. The first single and title track from his upcoming album, Comal County Blue, is at number 4 on the Texas Music Chart after only 4 weeks. "'Comal County Blue' has been the fastest growing single from an artist on an independent label in 2008," stated Katie Key, Editor of the Texas Music Chart (The Industry Standard). The news comes the same day that Jason Boland and The Stragglers regrettably announce that Jason Boland's recent vocal injury is going to require minor surgery. After what was hoped to be a brief sidelining in early July when Jason Boland discovered that he had a polyp on his vocal chord, specialists have determined that Jason Boland should and will require an operation to have it removed. Ironically, the surgery date has been set for the same day as the new album's release date.
After visiting his personal physician in Oklahoma City, OK, Boland was referred to a specialist in Nashville, TN. It was then that he was officially ordered to postpone his tour dates for the immediate future. Upon a follow-up visit on July 31, it was determined that surgery was going to be needed for a full recovery of the singer's voice. Jason Boland and the Stragglers will return to the road later this year, as soon as he is cleared by the doctor's.
In the days leading up to the outpatient surgery, Boland looks forward to making a few non-performance appearances such as the one planned for College Days festival in Stillwater, OK. Boland is also planning on recording a radio special to talk about the new album, Comal County Blue, as well as to personally assure his fans that as one of his songs on the upcoming album states, "the party's not over."
Due to the incredible outpouring of well-wishes and support for the band in this time, the band wanted to assure everyone that the length of the down time is a necessity of the recovery time and should not be seen as a function of the degree of the injury. Stated Boland's manager, Cory McDaniel, "It could have been much more serious, however it's being treated properly, and we are assured by the specialist that this will guarantee a full recovery, it's more of a matter of giving his voice ample time to heal following what should be regarded as nothing more than a minor surgery"
The band's next studio album, Comal County Blue, is due for release an Aug. 26, 2008. The first single and title track from that album entered the top 5 of the Texas Music Chart (The Industry Standard) this week, making it the fastest growing single by an artist on and independent label for 2008. Comal County Blue is Jason's fifth studio album and his first release on his own label, Proud Souls Entertainment, in conjunction with the Apex Nashville label and Thirty Tigers distribution.

Oh no, most of it's true.
He preaches the gospel when he says "It's the only place made colder, in the middle of June, by the endless stream of strangers, brought by the summer moon." This place sucks during the summer. I kayak, and *I* do not come down into your county to kayak during the summer months. Screw that noise. I'd rather be out on the water down there when the weather's cold, at least I don't have to compete with half-naked drunks (and not of the 'fairer' sex either, but the REALLY dumb ones).
I'll have to tell you the next time I'm headed down that way.
Sounds like he needs a Rich, Young, Dumb, Nymphomaniac
Someone attached to the band is saying that "the nympho song isn't Jason's. ....".
I was asked to pass that on.

That sucks...I always look forward to seeing those guys when they roll through town. Hopefully the surgery is a success and everything is just delayed a little while.

I hope he recovers quickly, I really do like his music.. However "the best country band" I don't know about that one. Chris Knight, Randy Rogers Band, Bleu Edmondson Band, Charlie Robinson Band. The list goes on and on. But they are good

Chris Knight is pretty good but he isn't anywhere near the pure country singer that Jason is. Charlie is bad ass too, but again, he does a lot of different types of music. Randy Rogers is one of my favorites but with every album he wanders a little bit further away from the music that made him famous. And Bleu has not even pretended to be anything but a Southern Rocker for a long long time. Bleu's old lead guitar player use to live right down the street from me and I use to sell some merchandise for the BEB years ago. I love the BEB and catch every show when they are around this area, but they haven't played anything remotely country in years.
Jason is the best pure country singer I have heard in decades. So I stick to my statement. But I'm not trying to argue, mostly just talking music and bumping this thread for a little more exposure. :)
I've bought thousands upon thousands of country records since I got interested in the music over 50 years ago, and I agree that Jason Boland's at the top of today's crop, along with Chris Knight and Dwight Yoakam.
I have all of Jason's discs; they've got a powerful hard country sound, but his lyrics are way beyond the usual cliches of the genre. Even when he does the overworked booze and pickup truck themes, he's adds intelligence, depth and creativity that the Nashville herd can't begin to imagine. The hardest task of a country band is to maintain the tradition but keep an edge on it - "keep it in the road", as Bill Monroe used to say. Jason and the Stragglers have flat got it, and unlike some of the creative types, than manage to keep it pretty, too.
Start with the Pearl Snaps disc if you haven't heard him. "Proud Souls" on that disc is what Dylan would do if he had Jason's writing talent and voice.

"Proud Souls" is a great song. I agree they are a good band just wouldn't label them best ever. But thats the glory of America. Everyone can like what they want. As long as I agree with it............LOL

Wow, I wasn't sure I was going to get a single response, much less this. Thank you for showing love and support for a great group of guys.:yourock:

It's nice to see that someone enjoys Jason's music almost as much as I do. Nice review.

I never said "best ever". That's a big long list. But I do believe they are the best pure country band currently playing.

And you'll like them even more once you have an album in hand. All of his albums are great. Pass it on to our friends. And catch his live show sometime. You won't regret it.
I've always like his live version of Dixie Land Delight...good stuff.

The best country band on earth is still Earl Scruggs' two hands.
