View Full Version : Guns and Gustav
August 27, 2008
We just got a call from Devline Rossell, a charter captain based out of Venice, Louisiana. He was shopping in New Orleans to get some supplies before the arrival of Gustav (currently listed as a tropical storm that has left at least 22 dead in the Caribbean) and reported that the item most in demand was not food, clothing or shelter.
“I just left a sporting goods store and you would think that the number-one selling item would be plywood or potable water or gasoline right now,” he said. “Apparently it is AR-15s and .223 ammo. I watched at least 20 people buy AR-15s and cases of .223.”
Can’t say I’m surprised. After the nightmare that was Katrina I think it would be unwise for anyone to assume the state, local or federal government could guarantee his or her personal safety during a natural disaster. Of course, I think it is foolish to assume that under any circumstance.
The AR buying spree demonstrates that people don’t think of it as an “assault weapon” but rather an arm that is ideally suited for self-defense, which it is. I also suspect that for some of the folks this is their first firearm. Goes to show that not only is there no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole but that there is no such thing as a gun-control advocate in one either.

If this is another direct hit to the City de Chocolate, I wonder if the powers that be learned their 2A lesson the last time.

Not an assault weapon. An anti-assault weapon.

I hope this gun buying spree is because all those people are already prepped with food, water and all the rest of supplies that are required.
Plus, what better time to talk your spouse into spending the money for family protection?
You could always lie to her and tell her you will return the gun if you don't need it during the emergency.:whistling:

A "homeland defense rifle".

And those guns will end up in a closet. Look for NIB AR-15s for sale soon.

I bet all the GT bucks I have now, and all I ever will have that the mayor is already telling people to get ready for evacuation. I also make the same type of wager that he don't wait until 24 hours before landfall to say get out. Only bet me if you think the mayor will do basically what he did last time.
Any takers?:whistling:

Heck, I live in Georgia and I'm going to give it a try tonight! Thanks for the idea!
Of course nothing like the looting in NOLA has ever happened in FL but before Fay hit us one of the wal-marts in Ocala sold out of shotguns.
Just goes to show you that at least SOME people know that you may be on your own for a good while.

I really dont care what they do with them...if they want them for a weekend thats fine but every person that buy a gun like and AR strengthens our side.
After katrina there are many people who now know that a gun it a tool you really might need. Just think of it as bring more votes to our side.

One of the prep items I did yesterday preparing for my own family " bug out" (just moved to New Orleans in June for job transfer) was getting the BOG ready.
Bushmaster M4 and 600 rounds (all loaded into Pmags), 1911, Beretta M9 (the wifes), and Mossberg 500 all loaded and ready to travel. Shotgun is packing the least amount of rounds at around 200 with the pistols in excess of 300 each.
Not for leaving. For return purposes.
And yeah, on the move to N.O., the Bushmaster was purchased JUST on the above excuse. :)
Shelves are getting thin on ammo down here. Was at WalMart earlier today and shotgun shells in ALL guages and loads were sold out. Didn't check on 556 as I have enough with more not making the trip out. Ditto on both .45 and 9mm.
And yes, firearms prep was in ADDITION to food, gas, clothing, papers etc being prepped for travel.
Should be on the road outbound by tomorrow evening when they announce evac.
Happy Labor Day to everyone else...

I wish all of you guys the best of luck. Only the kids will get enjoyment out of all the excitement.
Last week, when we thought we were going to get whacked by Faye, my wide said something very strange to me ..." dont forget to bring more ammunition inside?"...we live in an upscale gated community!

Are Jack Boots water proof? Come to think of it, what the hell are jack boots, and are thugs the only people permitted to buy them?:dunno:
