Buying .40 s+w today, I was asked for my permit.
I looked at the name tag and I dont recall his name but he was the department manager. I asked why do you need my permit and what makes you think I have one.
He replied you wouldn't be buying pistol ammo if you didn't have a pistol.
I said it's not for a pistol , it's for a rifle from overseas.
He said yeah right, good one.
Since when cant we buy ammo from Walmart without a permit?
Is that legal?
My wife used to pick up my ammo for me, I guess no more.
Anybody have any info on this, It kinda pissed me off!
I bought some .223 value packs recently and only needed my GA DL.
I'm sure it isn't policy.
Maybe the department manager just did not like the "cut of your jib" so to speak and asked for your CHL to just make sure he wasnt selling ammunition to someone he suspected might be a convicted felon.
I recently purchased two boxes of Win White Box .40 and was asked by the cashier if it was pistol ammo. I told her it was, and that was that. First time I've ever been asked that there. The store's in Moscow, ID.

Yea don't ya know WW dept. managers are trained in the subtle art of felon recognition.
You failed buddy, naw leave the store and show your receipt or lack thereof.
Its always been Wal-Mart policy to ask for ID for "pistol ammo" (which for some how includes .22lr.) No sales for pistol ammo for anyone under 21. Thats not law I don't think, I think its WM policy. So far as the CHL? Beats me, do you have to have one to purchase pistol ammo in Conn?

Seems to me you should have asked the manager for details on why he needed to see it. Your test above doesn't indicate that you pressed the issue.

Hi Happy Seal,
I see you are in CT. :)
Rule of Thumb:
Stick to the truth (it's easier). ;)
You: Yes. This ammo is for a pistol.
Purchasing Ammo:
All you needed to show him was your Driver's License for proof of age.
- You are under NO OBLIGATION to show him your permit or to admit/deny that you have one.
Deflection:
Mgr: My I see your Permit?
You: Ah, here you go. This is my Driver's License. That should satisfy the state age requirement for buying ammo. :)

Yeah I didn't press the issue cause wasn't thinking it's a big deal.
I shouldn't have showed my permit either.
Doug your right there. I've only pulled out my permit a couple times and it was for purchases only.

<--------------has bought many boxes of WW 40.
Clerk: "You want target or hollow point.
Me: "Two boxes of target and one of hollow point please."
Clerk: Handing over the ammo.----------"Thank you."
I continue shopping all over the store, then go to checkout, ammo gets tossed in the bags with the other stuff and I'm on my way home.
The last time I bought ammo at Walmart I had my ID ready to show the clerk, and she said there was no need because she "knew I was over 18".
So, I guess it just depends on the clerk...but I think that Dept. Manager was way out of line asking to see your permit.
Remember, when they ask if it is for a rifle or pistol, always reply "machine gun"

Here they have always checked for a FOID card and ammo has to be paid for at the sporting goods register.

The only thing they've ever asked for from me is payment for the ammo.........:dunno:
sometimes they card me and sometimes they dont.
of course I'm 23 so its understandable but I dont think I would show my ccw....the DL would have to do.

Exactly where is this Walmart of which you speak?
Maybe he is not very versed and meant "driver's permit"??
i want to know what wal-mart this is also, i've never been asked that. and about that "rifle or pistol" stuff, who cares ?
When asked if ammo is for a rifle or a pistol, just look them in the eye, smile and say "Yes!":whistling:
The correct answer should be: "its for my machine gun".

Grew up in Moscow; can't live there now as it has gone to the libs and common sense is quickly disappearing.
BTW, my dad is the chief of police there and most of my family is still there. I am amazed at all of the horror stories they tell me about how the libs are taking over and trying to force their views on everybody...

I would have asked for their badge and LE ID.
Even better is when they ask "Are you 21?" and I answer no and just look at them................................................................................ long pause later still not knowing what to say to me, register making that anoying beep noise the entire time................................................... some more just standing there....... Then they will start to tell me I cann't get it (when I obviously do not look younger than 21) when I interupt and tell them my age...
It is classic. try it........

Back in the day when I still bought ammo at Wal Mart, I would get 9mm and get asked "Is this for a pistol or a rifle?"
I would scratch my head and say, "Jeez, I dunno...is a 9mm submachine gun a pistol or a rifle? Because it LOOKS like a rifle but it SHOOTS pistol ammo..."
I buy all my components online.
Nobody has ever asked for a permit or ID.

I've always wanted to walk into a bar or wal-mart and try to buy and age-restricted item, and when they say "Can I see some ID?" and I just say "No." and stand there to see what their reaction would be.

This is interesting. I don't know what the guy behind the counter was trying to accomplish, but he had no way to know you had a CCW.
I would have handed him my Driver's License.
If he asked again for my permit, I would have asked for his supervisor.
Its always been Wal-Mart policy to ask for ID for "pistol ammo" (which for some how includes .22lr.) No sales for pistol ammo for anyone under 21.
Which is why I always say it's for my Beretta CX4. Of course, then their eyes glaze over and they start to drool as their minds shut down at the concept of a non Wal*Mart-er actually knowing something.

No permit is required. He is full of crap. (*Unless some commie state requires it that I don't know of but that'd be Illinois or NY or NJ if anything.)
He's just a busy body, I guarantee. Tell him to shove off.

hahah i hate some walmart employees...
walmart lady just gave ammo to another customer:
me: "excuse me, can i get three boxes of the wwb 9mm while you have the case open?"
old lady in blue vest: "you have to be 21 to buy pistol ammo, if you want you can have your daddy buy it for you"
me: (handing her my drivers license) "are you kidding me?:steamed: that'll be three boxes"
i know i look young, it sucks now but i'll still look sexy when i'm old. what kind of nerve do you have to have to talk to somebody this way? asking me for my license is one thing - do look younger than 21. but to just assume that i'm not of age when purchasing ammo and tell me to "have my daddy buy it" just turned me from happy to really ticked off.

I've already been in trouble with my wife for "embarassing" her when I argued with the walmart staff about whether or not they need to know if its for pistol or rifle. I was buying 9mm ammo which was going to be shot through my bro in laws 9mm rifle. They gave me some BS excuse that its a question designed to ensnare those under 21 (which by law cannot buy a pistol in MI). Since they can't buy a pistol they shouldn't be buying pistol ammo. I told them its not their business or place to police in that manner and that the "pistol ammo" I was buying was indeed for use in a rifle. Anyway, my wife didn't like my tone about it  and I don't like walmarts tone about it. The fact that they already checked my drivers license was enough.
In Central Texas...most of the Wally worlds don't even sell ammo anymore....that's right Texas, not Kalifornikstan, where they are try to pass open carry....

I have bought a ton of ammo from Wally World. I just tell the guy what I want and he gets it out. I have to pay for it there (not allowed to haul it to the front for checkout) but other than that...no biggie.

When I used to buy ammo at Wal-Mart they would always ask if it was for a pistol or a rifle. If I told them it was for a pistol they had to make sure I was over 21, otherwise I had to be 18.
Never had to show my permit, though.

I said that and got called a psycho in Walmart. Then I had fun toying with the clerk. I was only buying .22lr right before christmas. I told her none of that mattered since you can almost shoot anything from everything else now-a-days. She was from up North from her accent. I just grinned and said "Should we get the manager?"

The only time I bought ammo from Wally World, I bought three 9mm WWB value packs and 3 of .45 acp.
The luck of the draw was the store manager had the key to the case. His only question to me was, will that be all?
I wasn't about to show any ID since I am well over the legal age to buy ammo, and was paying with cash.

That's exactly what I was told at the same location last year while buying ammo from a different employee!
Manager happened to know .40 is a pistol caliber and was trying to prove that he knew. I will call the general manager later today and ask what the policy actually is. I'll post the results later.:dunno:
The WallyWorld near me doesn't sell ammo/guns any longer. I have to drive 20 minutes south of here.
There are some real geniuses in that store.
I asked the clerk for 4 boxes of 9mm WWB and she asked me if I was 21.
"Ummmmmmm . . no ma'am, I'm not."
"I can't sell it to you, then. You have to be 21 to buy ammo."
"Ma'am. That's discrimination because of age."
"Huh?"
"Ma'am. . . I'm 54. You asked me if I was 21. Now, if you aren't going to sell to me because I'm 54, that's age discrimination."
"Sir, here's your ammo."

Maybe read those gun laws over once more...I'm 19 and LEGALLY bought and own a Glock 22. Still trying to understand why I can buy and OWN the gun, but not the ammo. It really is a non-issue since I order all of my .40 cal online.
Anyway, I was with a buddy of mine when Walmart told him he couldn't purchase rifle ammo at 19. The Walmart just happen to be located in the same city who employees me...as a detention officer in their jail. He took it far enough that the patrol Sgt. showed up, it didn't help Walmart's case when the Sgt. and myself were on a first name basis...:tongueout:
