View Full Version : Who else enjoys modifying their vehicles?
I've been happily messing with cars, guns, and anything with a motor for over 25 years.
My wife doesn't get it, and my mom once accused me of being "addicted" to cars...
I just enjoy personalizing things and get a certain amount of satisfaction out of doing my own work and making something unique.
Today, I got in some window louvers for my Mustang and sprayed and installed them myself. I have a repro 1969 Mustang Mach 1 scoop on the way, which I'll spray and install myself.
My wife hates my hobby, but; I don't look at porn, don't watch sports, don't cheat on her, and spend very little on my little modifications. I just think some people don't get the satisfaction others get from stuff like this.
Here's some pics of today's fun:

As soon as I can afford them, I want those kind of side louvers for my Mustang. And some Bullet wheels too. I'd also love to stick as many Shelby parts into her that will fit too. Naturally, money being the only restraint.
My brother asked me why if I wanted to do all those things, why I hadn't just bought a Shelby to begin with?
I told him I didn't have $60k at the time.

When I first started looking for the louvers, all I could find were $200 sets that came painted.
I bought these for $60, spent $25 for paint, and installed them myself.
I think the $200 ones probably look a little nicer, but then I wouldn't get the personal satisfaction of screwing them up myself...

I do but I can't afford to do much.
I have a '99 Trans Am WS6.
All I've done in nearly 10 years is:
SLP Loud Mouth catback exhaust
Whisper Lid intake box
K&N high flow air filter
Hotchkiss shock tower brace (engine bay brace)
Pro 5.0 Power Tower shifter (factory shifter was sloppy)
There is a lot more I'd like to do but lack the time and funds.

I love those cars!
I lamented the fact that the new computer controlled cars required a $400 tuner to do simple things like adjust the timing and air/fuel mixture.
However, after getting one for mine, I must admit that it is very nice to firm up tranny shifts, throttle response, adjust the speedo for larger tires, advance timing, etc by just pushing a couple of buttons and not getting my hands dirty.
Also, I can check any trouble codes and clear them myself instead of paying the stealership $100 a pop to do so.

That's amazing! Almost too nice to drive!

I have the same hobbies. Got my first car at 15, 1974 Dodge Charger and never stopped.
Some of my rides and all of them modified:
1970 Camaro RS split bumper 383 stroker/turbo 350/ 12 bolt posi
1984 Monte Carlo SS 396/turbo 400/ 8.5 Grand National posi rear end
1987 Buick Grand National heavily modified 3.8 turbo/ heavily modified 200R4/ stock rear end. Dynoed 532hp at rear wheals.
Current rides are:
2007 Mustang GT/CS, under drive pullies, Borla stingers, K&N cold air kit, Hurst short throw shifter, sequential tail lights, custom dyno tunes using SCT tuner 287hp 297pft at rear wheels. I plan on adding a super charger in the future.
1979 Chevy Malibu 383/turbo 350, stock 7.5 rear end with 3:42 posi. No plans for more mods. Might sell it soon.
2006 Yamaha Vmax stock motor with custom made pipes by Mark’s performance products, K&N air filter and Dyno Jet stage 1 jet kit tuned on Dyno 133hp 87pft at rear tire.
Right now I want a Cadillac CTS-V so bad I can’t stand it. Thought about selling all my toys to get the 2009 CTS-V which has 550hp from the factory.
Oh ya I also have a bunch of guns and they are also modified. One of my favorites is my Ruger 10/22 with more mods than I care to list.
nice truck bud! here's mine. didn't get crazy with the frame, but I did do everything shown here... started as a chevy extreme

I took an old 92 Corvette and overhauled the engine, making it a 383 with ported heads and intake, and a custom grind camshaft. When stock, the car had about 265 rear wheel horsepower (RWHP) and ran the quarter mile at 13.85 seconds and 98 MPH. This year, it has over 400 RWHP and runs the quarter in 11.66 seconds at 118 MPH.
Here's the engine, doesn't look too different.

At launch, it almost lifts the front wheels. Just a little more power...

Wow, glad to see a fellow MiniTrucker on here Revel8, sweet....
Yes, it is clean, yes, it will be driven. No, its not irs, straight axle. 98% powdercoated in the pics. Unfortunately, building a garage, remodeling a bathroom and buying upwards of 10 firearms this year has really taken a toll on my truck budget, so that chassis is just collecting dust in my garage now.....

1979 Malibu AKA Old Blue. She is a true sleeper. Since this pick I added a performance suspension and 15" Corvette rallies that I had powder coated.

Ya I know, I need to update my pics.
wow. . . . . I havent went past exterior or bolt on performance mods. Nice looking vehicles though. . . Wish I had the money to do what you guys do, but I have to make due with my Chevy Blazer... So heres my modest addition to this thread.. Dont have pics of the stereo, but I mod my interiors more than the exteriors... seems to be cheaper..

i used to , but at age 39 , with career and family , and growing up all of hobbies have turned into camping , hiking, europe trips , knives and other hobbies. i raced my mustang for a long time and spent a ton of money started out as quarter mile ,1/8 mile drag stang then into road racer. now it is still road racer but i only tinker with it alittle now. it sits in my big metal shop , along with my 79 cj7 renegade ( parked it when gas went above 3 bucks lol ) it only gets 8 mpg. the fastest quarter mil times was in 10 second range at rockingham ,nc . i love the hobby but my likes and hobbies have evolved over the years. plus my daughters are grown up and spending time with them is my hobby now . and then they got hobbies too lol.
