If so, is any permanent depression on either side of the bed normal?

If some permanent depression/indentation is normal/acceptable, how much within what period of time?

thanx 4 ur help.

Not sure, but I regularly flip mine. I do it once a month, and it has no noticeable dips.

My mattress is about 10 years old though, but it wasn't a cheapy.

One of mine is 10 years old. I designed it with the layers I wanted and the Co. manufactured it the next day. It is still the same as it was the day it was delivered.

IMO when you go with the "name brand" manufacturers you get screwed.

We got a king size Sealy last year. While you can't feel any depressions, I notice them when I make the bed. I think we've rotated it once, though, and have a mattress pad on it, so I couldn't say what's causing it.

Warranties say that some depression (less than 1.5inch) is normal.
That is why they are all bogus.
The only thing the I know that helps is to flip and rotate it.
Don't bother with a new box spring unless yours is broken.
I don't like the pillow top ones, but the GF does. If you are going to go that route just buy a memory foam pad from Walmart and save yourself a lot of cash.
I decided that buying a modern mattress is one of the worst shopping experiences around.

I have a pretty decent mattress and I do not see any lingering depressions after I get off the bed.

I am assuming you are within a reasonable human weight range.

What he said. Be sure to flip/turn that thing on a schedule. Should minimize any depressions and maximize wear. I would like to have one like troy96 mentioned, that would be cool to design your own.

I don't like the pillow top ones, but the GF does. If you are going to go that route just buy a memory foam pad from Walmart and save yourself a lot of cash.

The pillow tops we looked at had a core of foam surrounded by cotton or wool. Much more comfortable than straight foam. Plus, they don't shift around on you. There's frugal and then there's cheap ;)

Also, most of the sheets these days are the deep pocket ones and they won't fit standard mattresses, even with the foam toppers. Unless you shop for your sheets at WalMart, too. :tongueout:

We bought a pillow top from Slumberland for our guest bedroom about a year ago. I frequently sleep there after being kicked out for snoring. There are definitely depressions on the pillow top. Granted this set was only $400.00, our $499.00 purchase from Sams for a Sealy (about 6 years ago)I believe shows no signs of positional depression, granted it's not a pillow top. Upon further reflection, I'd stay away from pillow top mattresses and go with a good, comfortable mattress and flip it occasionally.

We bought a Select Comfort Mattress a little over a year ago, with extra bells and whistles. We got the adjustable kit so I can change the elevation in the mattress as well to relieve stress points when I need to do so. Also, it has a massage feature. It's awesome!

It isn't a cheap way to go, but I have some "issues" with my back and neck because of a bad car accident when I was in college. It does help.

Not too long before that, we bought a Simmons Pillow top mattress that was pretty nice too, but my back really flared up and the Select Comfort was recommended. So we have a VERY comfortable guest bed, too!

I paid a few grand for a very nice bed about two years ago from Sit n Sleep. After a year and flipping it every month religiously, it developed depression on my side pretty badly. I am only 175 or so pounds. So I had it replaced by S and S under warranty and the new one I have is doing to same thing only not as bad.

Funny this thread came up. My wife and I have been fighting the losing battle agains mattresses for 10 years now. We've gone thru two +/-$1500 pillow tops, two memory foams and now a non-pillow top $1000 mattress (all name brands). The newest one is only a month old, and has already depressed to a point where we feel as if we're sinking into a hole (rotated every week as well). We are 185lbs and 120lbs respectively, and can't seem to find a mattress that won't depress. The warranties are bogus because a 1 inch depression is very uncomfortable, but won't be covered. So, we're still searching for a good night sleep. We have a friend that has a gel mattress, but that started to breakdown within a couple years of ownership. Reviews online don't look favorable on the air chamber mattresses because of mildew issues and the only other option we've found is to go to a Dux bed. I just haven't heard enough from owners on whether or not they are worth their very high price.

I just yesterday bought a Tempur-Pedic and has this very discussion with the sales person. a traditional mattress warranty covers depressions that are 1.5" deep. The Tempur-Pedic warranty covers 1/2" depressions. She also said that today's "quality" mattresses don't need to be flipped (turned yes, flipped no)

Wife and I just brought home our Restonic matress yesterday. Last night was our first night sleeping on it. She likes firm and I like soft. This one is perfect. Restonic took their best selling firma and best selling soft and split a line right down the middle. It's like two matresses in one. I slept good.
