Boeing Union Calls for a Strike
Work Stoppage Would Be Big Blow For the Company
By J. LYNN LUNSFORD
August 30, 2008

Boeing Co.'s largest labor union called for a strike, setting up a battle that has the potential to derail the company's core commercial-airplanes unit at a time when customers are clamoring for fuel-efficient airplanes.

"The company had an opportunity to come to its employees with an offer that rewarded them for their hard work by offering a top-of-the-industry contract and some real job security, and it failed on all counts," said Mark Blondin, aerospace coordinator for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

Two-thirds of the members must vote against the proposal on Sept. 3 for a strike to occur. In 2005, the union struck for 28 days. In 2002, the union rejected the contract but failed to gain enough votes to strike.

The union leadership's condemnation of the proposed three-year contract, which would boost union members' wages by $34,000 on average over the period, came as a surprise to Boeing officials. They said they had hoped this year to deliver a contract that would avoid stirring up some of the tensions that had bedeviled previous negotiations.

A strike would be a severe blow to Boeing, which is running at full capacity to meet an unprecedented demand for more-fuel-efficient jetliners. A strike would also further delay development and deliveries of the 787 Dreamliner, which is already running roughly two years behind schedule with nearly 900 orders already on the books.

When Boeing officials delivered their so-called best and final offer Thursday, they said that the offer had been personally approved by Boeing Chairman and Chief Executive Jim McNerney, as well as the board of directors and Boeing Commercial Airplanes President Scott Carson.

Boeing officials have repeatedly said they want to avoid a strike, but they also insist that they won't do so at the expense of agreeing to a labor contract that hampers the company's ability to compete in what is increasingly a cutthroat sales environment.

Boeing spokesman Jim Proulx said the company was "extremely disappointed" with the union's recommendation. He said Boeing believes the company's offer "rewards employees for the company's success and allows us to remain competitive."

Under the contract that will expire next week, the average Boeing machinists earned about $27 an hour, or $56,000 a year before overtime.

Mr. Blondin said union members were expecting a raise of at least 13%, rather than the 11% that the company offered. He also said the company's offer to raise the monthly pension multiplier by $10 to $80 was insufficient for a company that was as flush as Boeing is right now.

He slammed Boeing for refusing to insert language into the contract that would have given the union greater authority over some tasks that Boeing took back during previous contracts. Because of those changes, contractors now deliver parts directly to the airplanes, rather than passing through a union receiving station.

Boeing has said that such freedom is a key part of its attempts to speed up production and that it doesn't intend to go backward.

During the final negotiations, Boeing officials did abandon several hot-button proposals related to pensions, health care and job security after union officials said their inclusion in a final offer would guarantee a strike. The company said it believed it had delivered a proposal that "adds up to the best contract in the aerospace industry."

Mr. Blondin said in an interview that the proposal "fell far short" of what the union believed the Chicago aerospace company should have offered, considering it is making record profit. The union says that during the past three years the company has racked up more than $13 billion in profit, a figure Boeing doesn't dispute.

"We think they gave the bare minimum that they had to in order to try and win over just enough members to avoid a strike," he said. "Well, our members are smarter than that, and they've let us know they are angry."

Mr. Blondin said union officials had also filed an unfair-labor-practices complaint against the company, alleging that the company improperly tried to influence talks by "bypassing our negotiators and going directly to the media and our employees with every offer."

Boeing has insisted it did nothing wrong by posting daily updates and video messages on its Web site, but Mr. Blondin said the union believes the move was "a blatant attempt" to undermine the union's ability to obtain the best agreement on behalf of its 26,800 members at Boeing.

"The company can blame its negotiating committee for this strike, which we believe will happen," he said. "They thought they were communicating with the employees, but they were just making them angry."

Mr. Blondin said union negotiators notified Boeing on Friday that the company's proposal was insufficient and offered to return to the bargaining table through the Labor Day weekend to reach an agreement. "Boeing told us they weren't interested," he said.

Mr. Proulx said the company doesn't intend to revise its offer. "We have made what is truly our best and truly our final offer," he said.

11% is pretty good. But it doesn't say if it's for 1 year or over the course of the contract. More than 2 years, and yeah, it ain't that good.

The Aerospace Machinists Union is probably still one of the worst examples of what a union is supposed to be that I've ever seen.
I was a member for many years, and all the union ever tried to do was get more wage increases and bonuses. They never cared about working conditions, job security, overtime, vacation pay, or retirement and medical benefits.
All they ever really fought for was higher wages. Just so the union dues could go up.

Ummm, just to clarify things, it was George H.W. Bush and Rush Limbaugh that championed NAFTA and got it shoved down our throats, it just didn't get around to being signed until Clinton took office.

And it was Ronald Reagan that gave the illegal aliens amnesty. And George W. Bush that wanted to again.

Errr...your part right. I don't know about Limbaugh. He's pretty much a worthless POS regardless. But your wrong on the illegal aliens issue. At least in part. In the latest go around it was Ted Kennedy and John McCain. Being from Arizona, which has a very high Mexican population, he was trying to appeal to his voter base.

And frankly, I considered this to be a major problem. Until today. Sarah Palin! What a fantastic choice. She has over a 80% approval rating in Alaska and is known for coming in and taking the trash out. Which is exactly what we need. I wasn't going to vote until today but I am now. I don't like McCain. But she is fantastic.

The actions of the Machinists Union rings hollow in these parts. Contrary to union bosses' myth, Boeing Machinists are some of the highest paid technical employees in the region, then tack on the tidy benefits package.

If anything, a strike will have a very negative effect on both the Dreamliner and the potential air tanker program. That, in turn, will cause a reduction in the workforce and cause the ripple effect of fewer members, hence, fewer dues.

They strike and everyone will lose. Market share goes to other aerospace companies. Employees get laid off, then wonder why.

Boeing has just, in the past year, wrested the title of 'largest supplier of airliners' back from Airbus, who held it for a couple of years. A strike would give the lead back to Airbus, and cripple Boeing's intentions of gaining a larger lead via the Dreamliner.

The union here is looking for rewards at the WRONG time. This type of behavior is EXACTLY what got the UAW into the situation it's in today, and the IAMA is walking into the same potential trap. A smaller, weaker, second tier airliner manufacturer is NOT going to be in the best interests of the union members.

New flash for ya'll. Illegal aliens don't have amnesty. They have been regularly rounded up for deportation. A simple Google search on the keywords "illegal alien raid" produces hundreds of stories of raids and deportation such as the most recent in Mississippi. Read on below.

And Clinton signed NAFTA into law not Bush. Another news flash for ya'll... Rush Limbaugh is nobody. He's not an elected official or member of any cabinet. He has no legislative powers. He's a talk show host. He's an entertainer and a poor one at that. Anyone who believes he makes law is sadly misinformed.

ICE: Nearly 600 detained in Mississippi plant raid
By HOLBROOK MOHR, Associated Press

LAUREL, Miss. (AP) — The largest single-workplace immigration raid in U.S. history has caused panic among Hispanic families in this small southern Mississippi town, where federal agents rounded up nearly 600 plant workers suspected of being in the country illegally.

One worker caught in Monday's sweep at the Howard Industries transformer plant said fellow workers applauded as immigrants were taken into custody. Federal officials said a tip from a union member prompted them to start investigating several years ago.

Fabiola Pena, 21, cradled her 2-year-old daughter as she described a chaotic scene at the plant as the raid began, followed by clapping.

"I was crying the whole time. I didn't know what to do," Pena said. "We didn't know what was happening because everyone started running. Some people thought it was a bomb but then we figured out it was immigration."

About 100 of the 595 detained workers were released for humanitarian reasons, many of them mothers who were fitted with electronic monitoring bracelets and allowed to go home to their children, officials said.

About 475 other workers were transferred to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Jena, La. Nine who were under 18 were transferred to the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement.

John Foxworth, an attorney representing some of the immigrants, said eight appeared in federal court in Hattiesburg on Tuesday because they face criminal charges for allegedly using false Social Security and residency identification.

He said the raid was traumatic for families.

"There was no communication, an immediate loss of any kind of news and a lack of understanding of what's happening to their loved ones," he said. "A complete and utter feeling of helplessness."

The superintendent of the county school district said about half of approximately 160 Hispanic students were absent Tuesday.

Roberto Velez, pastor at Iglesia Cristiana Peniel, where an estimated 30 to 40 percent of the 200 parishioners were caught up in the raid, said parents were afraid immigration officials would take them.

"They didn't send their kids to school today," he said. "How scared is that?"

Those detained were from Brazil, El Salvador, Germany, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, and Peru, said Barbara Gonzalez, an ICE spokeswoman.

Elizabeth Alegria, 26, a Mexican immigrant, was working at the plant Monday when ICE agents stormed in. When they found out she has two sons, ages 4 and 9, she was fitted with a bracelet and told to appear in federal court next month. Her husband, Andres, was not so lucky.

"I'm very traumatized because I don't know if they are going to let my husband go and when I will see him," Elizabeth Alegria said through a translator Tuesday as she returned to the Howard Industries parking lot to retrieve her sport utility vehicle.

"We have kids without dads and pregnant mothers who got their husbands taken away," said Velez's son, Robert, youth pastor at the church. "It was like a horror story. They got handled like they were criminals."

Howard Industries is in Mississippi's Pine Belt region, known for commercial timber growth and chicken processing plants. The tech company produces dozens of products ranging from electrical transformers to medical supplies, according to its Web site.

Gonzalez said agents had executed search warrants at both the plant and the company headquarters in nearby Ellisville. She said no company executives had been detained, but this is an "ongoing investigation and yesterday's action was just the first part."

A woman at the Ellisville headquarters told The Associated Press on Tuesday that no one was available to answer questions.

In a statement to the Laurel Leader-Call newspaper, Howard Industries said the company "runs every check allowed to ascertain the immigration status of all applicants for its jobs."

"It is company policy that it hires only U.S. citizens and legal immigrants," the statement said.

Gov. Haley Barbour recently signed a law requiring Mississippi employers to use a U.S. Homeland Security system to check new workers' immigration status.

The law took effect July 1 for businesses with state contracts and takes effect Jan. 1 for other businesses. Mississippi lawmakers once used laptops made by Howard Industries, but it's not clear whether the company has current state contracts.

Under the law, a company found guilty of employing illegal immigrants could lose public contracts for three years and the right to do business in Mississippi for one year.

The law also makes it a felony for an illegal immigrant to accept a job in Mississippi. A message was left with the district attorney's office after hours seeking comment on whether he would use the law to bring state charges against Howard Industries or the workers.

The Mississippi raid is one of several nationwide in recent years.

On May 12, federal immigration officials swept into Agriprocessors, the nation's largest kosher meatpacking plant, in Iowa. Nearly 400 workers were detained and dozens of fraudulent permanent resident alien cards were seized from the plant's human resources department, according to court records. In December 2006, 1,297 were arrested at Swift meatpacking plants in Nebraska and five other states.

Associated Press Writers Shelia Byrd in Hattiesburg, Emily Wagster Pettus in Jackson and Eileen Sullivan in Washington, D.C., contributed to this report.

I'm sure this is just what they need all considering Boeing was allowed to re-bid on that tanker deal.

I get so tired of hearing these people whine about their pay and benefits. If they don't think they are getting enough compensation, do what the other 98% of the country NOT in a union does, and go work someone else if you think you're worth more.
