View Full Version : Glock founded in 1963? Any original gun pics??
I read that Glock was founded in 1963. I'm curious if anyone has any pics of the guns back then?
Did they just look like the 1st gen. Glocks? Why did Glock wait 20+ years to alter the design?
Thanks!

They didn't make guns, they started out making curtain rings until the 70's then they made knifes and entrenching tools, machine gun belts, and magazines... Guns didn't come until the '80's
I'd love to get my hands on a Glock curtain ring!
they did not make gun's back in the day they made other parts out of polymer :whistling:

You can't be serious about the curtain rings!!!...I'm going to need some proof on that one. ;)

When was the company started and the history behind it?
1963 - Glock GesmbH established in Deutsch-Wagram
1963 - Glock's first product: plastic curtain rods
1970s - Plastic kitchen boxes, machine gun ammo belts, shovels, and utility knives are offered.
1980 - Company founder Gaston Glock starts developing a gun
1982 - The Austrian army decides on the Glock 17
1984 - With service in the Norwegian army, the Glock leaves Austria
1986 - G18 introduced
1986 - Glock Inc. in Smyrna, GA, established
etc.

[edit] History
Founded in 1963,[1] Glock started out as a manufacturer of curtain rods before branching out into the arms industry in the 1970s, manufacturing machine gun belts, practice hand grenades, plastic magazines, field knives, and entrenching tools for the Austrian Army.[1] When, in the early 1980s, the Austrian Army requested a pistol model, Glock responded with the Glock 17, a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol. (The 17 was so-named because it was Gaston Glock's seventeenth patent.) The Austrian Army adopted the Glock 17 in 1982[1] with the Norwegian Army adopting the model two years later. One year later, Glock Inc. was established in the US in Smyrna, Georgia. In the next few years, Glock expanded its 9 mm product line, developing the select-fire Glock 18 in 1986 and the Glock 17L and Glock 19 in 1988.[1] In 1990 Glock became the first manufacturer to offer models chambered for the .40 S&W cartridge, the Glock 22 and the Glock 23, beating Smith & Wesson to the marketplace with pistols for their own cartridge[1].
I came in to post the Glock company original products, but y'all are way ahead of me.
I would love to be the proud owner of a Glock curtain rod. it would go in the "playroom" with the strongbox. Shoot, it would probably hang in front of it!
So given the evolution of Glock history, it would only make sense that they get into the business of making an AR type rifle.

Only if Austria announces they're accepting proposals for a new AR type rifle, and Gaston thinks, "Hey, I did it once, ...."

Harley used to make lawn mowers IIRC...

Now that would be cool. I'd love to see a Glock AR.

Harley Davidson was originally a bicycle shop. They might have helped make lawnmowers in the 1970's when AMF owned them.
Also I can't believe you've been a member of GT for almost 6 years now and need to ask a question about Glocks history. What threads have you been reading for the last 6 years?

I'm wondering if Glock had their mark on them though? Like the "G" surrounding the "lock"...
They'd be like tactical (tacti-cool) shower rings!!!

Are you sure? Those look suspiciously like S&W to me. :whistling:
Glock 17 = Glock's 17th patent.

Yes, but those curtain rods had generous tolerances so any type of rings could be fed to them without stoppages. They also put them through torture tests - they hung weights and other items from them to ensure they were able to handle any type of drapes or curtains - including bomb-proof drapes.
