Scottsdale officer shoots, kills K-9 partner

SCOTTSDALE -- A Scottsdale police officer shot and killed his police dog while conducting a search Friday morning.

It happened at about 2:30 a.m. at a home near 104th Way and Dynamite Boulevard.

Sgt. Chris Coffee his K-9 partner, Striker, were called to the home when an alarm went off.

Officers on the scene found an open door, and the caretaker of the home thought there might have been an intruder inside.

While conducting the search, Coffee apparently had his gun in his hand. The gun went off, hitting Striker.

The 6-year-old Czechoslovakian shepherd was rushed to an emergency animal clinic, but the vet was not able to save him.

While the shooting is believed to have been an accident, Chief Alan Rodbell said this incident is being treated like any other officer-involved shooting.

"We have begun a comprehensive investigation, involving both our Office of Internal Affairs, as well as out Investigative Services Bureau personnel," Rodbell said.

Coffee had been teamed with Striker, who had been with the department for four years, the whole time he was supervising the K-9 unit. Rodbell said Coffee's service record has been "exemplary."

"He is devastated," said Rodbell of Coffee. "Anyone who has pets and has lost a pet can imagine how this man is feeling. ... They live together. They play together. They train together. They spend they entire tour of duty together. ... They're best friends."

"These [dogs] are members of our police family, members of our department," Rodbell said. "They go in the door in lieu of us going in the door. They risk their lives on a daily basis ...."

Coffee, a 10-year veteran of the department who has been the K-9 supervisor for the past two-and-a-half years, is on administrative leave, which is standard procedure any time and officer fires his weapon.

Striker was one of five dogs in the unit. It's believed that he's the first Scottsdale police dog killed in the line of duty since the department was formed 45 years ago.

"This is a loss, not just for our police department. ... It's a loss for the community," Rodbell said.

No intruder was found in the home.

The first article I read shortly after it happened stated that the dog was on a leash. At that close range he didn't have a chance.

I'm sure the officer is devastated not only for the loss but a loss most likely due to his own negligence.

The gun goes off because the trigger was pulled, so its not really an accident just a mistake. I bet this officer is feeling like crap right now. Bad situation all around.

To the question, "how did this happen"? It happened because the officer had his finger on the trigger. He either suffered a sympathetic response, or startle reflex.

I say this not to criticize the officer involved; but to remind us ALL.

If the dog was on a leash and got excited the cop prolly had his hands full of pistol and leash, with the dog jerking and him trying to control it the trigger got pulled, poop happens.

Agreed. Unless there was a gross malfunction of the firearm there is no such thing as accidental. Only negligence.

So if something mechanical was wrong with a firearm then it is "intentional"? BS. I had a Browning shotgun that had sear trouble & accidentally discharged twice while shooting trap. I actually took said firearm to Browning, (no, not an authorized dealer but TO BROWNING) who thereupon repaired it for free and explained the problem.

There is a lot of "gray" in life and not everything is dead right or dead wrong. :)

If the dog was on a leash as stated I could see how trying to hold back the dog & having your gun out & ready it's possible. Your on full alert, the dog is pulling, & the trigger gets pressed. I would bet they train like that but Murphy's law is at work.

Being of the upper edge of the age chart! I resent the statement that it only happens when you get older. Old people, though slow and dangerous behind the wheel, can serve a purpose!

It's hard to control a police dog that is fired up on a search. Quite a few of our handlers won't even have their their guns out because one hand is really busy with the dog and the other is opening doors, maintaining blance, etc. Most of our handlers flat out tells us that they are watching their dog and controlling them only. We are expected to look for suspects that the dog misses and shoot people as necessary. If the guy had his gun out it was probably for a really good reason and his dog probably got jackeed up when he heard him clear leather. We had a dog that would go ape**** everytime he heard a handcuff case be popped open. Then when he heard the metal of handcuffs coming out he was ready bordering on uncontrolable. We would have to tell the handler to put his dog away first if we didn't need the dog out and we were going to hook someone. It's why I am a whole lot happier when we cut the dog loose and let him do his thing. Yes he can circle back and maybe bite one of us because he sees movement but at least the handler can use both hands for a gun, balance, etc.

Before people talk too much about AD/ND they need to actually know what they are talking about.

It was a long terrible story of the gun hating the dog. Dark night, insearch of a criminal the evil gun took the chance that no one would ever notice the evil deed forming in its mind. While no one was looking, and being carried gently by a police office the evil gun acted and shot the poor hound at close range. In the aftermath the evil gun played dumb, like an inanimate hunk of cold steel, pointing the blame at the innocent LEO.
When questioned IA said, we all know who did this and why, we just need proof.
