View Full Version : Own a gun you're ashamed to show to friends? (Show and or tell time)
H&K .45 AUTO

Okay folks... Here's the deal. I was sorting through the contents of my safe recently when I discovered a gun that I literally NEVER take to the range for fear of ridicule from my shooting buddies.
It's an older, German Sig Sauer P220 .45 ACP that actually is a good shooter but looks like absolute junk. I bought it a couple of years ago complete with nearly new night sights, 3 mags, Hogue rubber grip, a Fobus holster, some target ammo, and a box of 50 Winchester Rangers in the factory box with owners manual and even the warranty card for $200.00.
It was a smoking hot deal for a very good shooting gun. Bottom line on the sale was that the previous owner was a friend of mine who couldn't keep it, and the finish on the slide is HORRIBLE (oddly enough, the frame looks nearly new.) There's no rust or pitting, but it's a mix of dull black from the factory finish and a mostly gray look due to the majority of the finish being completely worn off.
This gun looks so homely that I am actually embarrassed when someone sees it. But, then again... It IS a good shooter.
My question is this: Am I alone here? How many other folks here on GT own a gun or two that shoots well but is so fugly that you are ashamed to be seen with it?
Sorry, I don't have pics of mine at the moment, but I'll try to get some added later. Any pics of your ugly ducklings are welcomed. I'm looking for stories and or pics of your firearms version of the Charlie Brown Christmas tree here.
Thanks in advance for any and all contributions to this thread.
Mine is also a Sig. I bought it September 2007 at place called Dave's Guns in Denver, which is closed now. Too bad, good place. Anyway, I think it was like 318.00 out the door. Overpayed, I know. Anyhow, it shoots like a DREAM. Action is nice and smooth, never had a single hiccup out of her. It has something that looks like black paint on the frame. I will send it so Sig to be refinished one of these days. Its a West German Sig P225 9mm (not P6), made in 1983.

Sure do!! It's a Glock G30:crying: I hate that gun. It's way to fat to carry well.

Refinish it. Be the first kid on the block to have a hard-chromed Sig. Or a Roguard'd Sig. etc etc.

Hey mlong54, if you hate that Glock 30 and it's too fat, give it to me. I will put it on a diet. Mines thin enough to carry so I'm sure I can thin up another one!

I've got a busted Rossi 22LR revolver that has electical tape on the grip and won't open or close without a VERY hard smack. Cylinder will not rotate either when closed. (Spacing issue?)
I've had it 10+years, and it was old when I got it.
I need to fix it up, but keep forgetting it when I go near the gunsmith shop.
Maybe today?

Actually, I bought this about 8 years ago for my mother, I take it to the range everytime I go and fire off about 50 rounds, it has about 1000 rounds through it, and it has never, ever failed to fire or feed. I paid around $65 for it, with the intention of it being a temp until I found her a .38 revolver, but I liked it so much, I kept it around. Suprising.. .TOTALLY! Would i buy another or trust it to save my life, probably not... but I didn't get the lemon, and it's ALL MINE!

holy carp thats the funniest shnizzle i ever saw!
Yes, I do. Many of my freinds are away of my Glock habbit, so they have accepted it. However, I am a bit ashamed of one gun... my RRA AR-15.
You see my freinds are lever gun guys, with a bolt action for long range.
It's just a bit embarrasing having a rifle that shoots such a small bullet, and looks like it was made by Mattel.
But I like it.

Had a couple of true dogs over the years (bolt action .410, RG revolver in .22, Iver Johnson top break .32) but I sold them at a "gun buyback" program at $50.00 each in WalMart giftcards. True story. Bought a lot of .45 WWB with the cards :).
Here is mine. I like this gun, but the Colt purists absolutely hate it. It's truly the red headed stepchild of Colt. I only shoot it when I'm by myself at the range because I get tired of people who know nothing about the gun running their mouths and regurgitating everything they've read about it on the internet....LOL.

I guess I wouldn't really say I'm embarrassed, because I told myself for years that I wanted a derringer and when I had the money I did buy a nice one, but it really doesn't see much range time.

The Colt Double does it for me, best gun I ever sold. And for anyone who has never had the displeasure of picking one up, here's a good explaination.
Go to a rest stop toilet and fish out a turd. Hold it in your hands. You have just experienced the ergonomics of a Colt Double Eagle.
Now, go buy a brand new Land Rover, put 100,000 miles on it in two months. You have just experienced the free fall depreciation of the Colt Double Eagle.
Now, go try to put 50 rounds through a Raven 25 without a jam or malfunction. You have just experienced the reliability of the Colt Double Eagle.
Long ass double action only trigger pull, too.

Compared to a Lorcin they are wonderful!
I have 2 .25's my dad left me to keep with my collection while he travels in his rv. I like the way the Galesi looks but its really inaccurate, and the Mod RG is ugly yet accurate, unfortunately the time i shot it the slide separated itself somehow from the grip as it was cycling back into battery. So needless to say the second one is completely unreliable and the first one you need to be almost point blank, lol.

Hello;
I keep a stash of older, Less 'fancy' firearms.
A couple of Lee Enfields, Some S&W 357 magnum Revolvers, etc, All are Shootable, But Don't look as 'Threating' than my other Tactical Arms.
I use them when I Travel cross country, If stopped by the 5-0, They are just a couple of old guns.
If stolen, I'm not out a 1,000.
I take them to the range, And most of the Time, The other shooters don't even ask about them. There Old, Scratched, and
I guess 'ugly'. But they Work and I Can use them.

This is why I rarely have it out with other shooters. People who know nothing about it, run it down. The weapon has a decocker. You can leave the hammer cocked, and the first pull will be single action, and all subsequent shots will be single action as well. Or, after chambering a round, you can use the decocker to lower the hammer, and the first pull will be a 13 pound double action, and all subsequent shots will be single action.
Dude, thanks for proving my point. LOL.

thats actually where i found the ones i posted a picture of. After my grandma died we were sorting everything and i found it under a bunch of stuff in a drawer. None of us even remember her or my grampa ever owning it. Mine is cracked on the grips at the same point yours is, lol.
I bought a 50rd box of ammo. and fired off all 50 with out a hitch.
For a pos, mine shoots pretty good, although I like the python I was left from my grandfolks much better.

I have a .22LR and 22 Mag Tanfoglio, Texas Ranger single action.
It's gold, in bad shape, and is exceedingly and dangerously inaccurate.
My dad gave it to me after buying it at a swap meet for $150.00. He got robbed.
After cocking the hammer, a slight breeze will trip the trigger.
I can never get rid of it, though, because my dad gave it to me....plus, nobody will buy it from me. :(
I'm saving it for a tax-dollar sponsored gun buyback program.
