View Full Version : Which Glock?
I started out looking at 1911's to carry concealed and now am looking at glocks. Which one would best for concealed carry? I'm leaning towards the subcompact .45. Any advice? This probably won't be my only Glock purchase but what one should I buy first?
If it's main purpose is CCW and you want .45acp go with the 30SF.

I am a 27 fan.....further, a 40 fan since it came on line.
I use Pearce +1 and +2 on my stock 27 mags...gimme' 11 or 12 rds of 40 over fewer 45 any day ....but thats just me.
The 30 will be my next purchase.

G30SF is good, but it's a staggered mag, so the grip is pretty thick in comparison to a 1911. If you want thin and .45ACP, then G36 is the way to go.
If overall size is more important than sticking to .45ACP, then the G39 might be your baby. It's a true subcompact, while both the G36 and G30 are much closer to the compact Glocks than the subcompacts. The difference, of course, is that the G39 is chambered in .45GAP instead of .45ACP. Ballistically, they're identical, but finding .45GAP ammo at your local gun shop or WalMart is difficult (and usually a couple of bucks more expensive per box when you do find it). Both .45ACP and .45GAP ammo is available all over the place online, for comparable prices.

Yep, that's what I went with in the compact size. I have a G-26 for my small 9mm needs.
G30SF if you want .45acp or if you prefer something more hi-cap (and a bit thinner) get the G19 (9mm).

I have the glock 30 and the glock 23. I like the glock 23 best for concealed carry. It holds 13 +1 and you have a full finger grip vs the two finger G26/27 grip. You add a aftermarket grip extender to the g26/27, then you may as well get the g23 as the guns are about the same in the grip. The grip of a gun is hard to conceal, the barrel length is not a problem. The G30 is a good shooter, but is thick, so make sure you are ok with the thickness of the gun if you want a .45acp gun.
Anyway, my granddaddy taught me that most want a little gun for carry or hide out, but when the S*** hits the fan situation, they want a gun they can shoot well. The Glock 23 is just the right size to be a good shooter.
It's my first time suggesting 40 cal, but I would agree that the 27 might be a good answer for you. I love the G30, but as others said it might be to thick for your needs. But definitely check it out. The 36 is single stack 45 so that could really work for you as well.
Thanks for all the quick replies. I'd like to have them all, lol. It looks like I'll own 3-4. 9, .40, .45. Just gotta figure out which one first. Where would be the cheapest place online to purchase accessories like the glock light with the laser?

I would spend the funds for the laser on good trainer. If you learn to shoot well, you will not need a laser.

You only have 2 choices:
1911
1. Slim grip, natural point of aim.
2. Limited capacity
3. 25oz up. Ultra to full size.
Glock
1. Grip is thicker
2. higher capacity
3. Polymer=Lighter and light.
What matters more to you. I rather have a 1911 ultra 9mm that can hold 9+1 rounds of SD ammo, But I would probably have to shoot 1000k rounds before I trust it with my life, whereas my Glock I trusted when NIB.

Recoil is much more manageable in a glock 26, thus making follow up shots and rapid fire more accurate IMO. If you plan on being a range commando and dressing around a bigger gun, by all means, get a 30 or a 23.

:) Now, I'm NOT looking for a fight with Cleve007; but, once you learn how to handle the 45 acp caliber, it becomes much easier to throw really large chunks of metal at things! After a lifetime of shooting, all my other pistols (except the 357's and the 32's) remain in the safe and I'm shooting 45 acp almost exclusively.
It's no big deal for me to fire twice, accurately, for every 9mm or 40 round the guy standing next to me fires. Sometimes other shooters will give me, 'looks' when I rapid fire like this; but I'm there for me, not them, and am perfectly willing to let others work things out for themselves.
(In this day and age, I think involving yourself with strangers, or making, 'new friends' at a public range is one of the stupidest things anyone can do.) :freak:
In my opinion, if it fits your hand, the G-30 (SF?) would be an excellent choice for CCW. Did you know that the G-30 is one of the most accurate Glocks? Nobody seems to know exactly why; but, it is! ;)

i am trying to decide between the g27 and g23 myself i am 6'1 220lbs
Right now I'm thinking either the 27 or 30. During the summer I normally wear a t-shirt and shorts. How am I going to carry either of these concealed? Or am I kidding myself? I'm 6' 275lbs. Thanks for all the replies.

G30SF is what you are looking for... packs a punch in a package that with care, you can conceal pretty well.
Definitely the G23!
Big-bore power in a reliable small frame.
No grip-on-mag issues to fumble around with....
You shouldn't have any trouble at all concealing a G23 unless you just have an unreasonable clothing selection.

Glock 30. :faint::faint:
:wavey::wavey:it is calling you :wavey:
If this pistol's primary role will be concealed carry, then the G27 wins all comparisons.
You can carry it with the short mag for maximum concealment and still have 10 rounds ready to rock. When the temps drop and coats are the norm I carry the same G27 using a G23 mag (with spacer), which gives a full length grip and 14 shots on tap.
Not saying a G23 or even G30sf can't fill the bill, but sizewise the G27 is more flexible for concealed carry methods.

I love the G30 and would recommend it to anyone who has hands big enough to hold it properly. In my opinion the SF model is only slightly smaller, not enough for many. That being said, a SF does fit me slightly better than the standard model. If it had been out three years ago, I may have bought it instead.
For folks who prefer the grip size of a typical GLOCK 9mm, the G37/38/39 (45GAP) is a ballistic twin to the 45ACP round.
If bought online, the 45GAP ammo is very reasonable. If you don’t reload, you can sell the brass to here on GT.
The only problem with owning a 45GAP is that many folks here in the GAP forum have no sense of humor and over-react to everything.
I would hate to have to ask a "newbie" question there. They may break out the torches and pitchforks if they suspect you are not a true believer.

I'd suggest a G30 or G30SF for the 10+1 capacity and use of readily available .45 ACP ammo. There's nothing wrong with the .45 GAP models, but ammo is harder to find. If the G30/30SF grip is too thick for you, the G36 is another option at the expense of capacity (6+1).
There are some good G30 deals out there if you shop around. It seems like a few people are dumping them in favor of the SF model.

G19.
IMO, its the perfect combo of firepower, shootability and concealability.
If you don't want a 9mm, than I suggest a G30.
