View Full Version : Glock 17L slide breakage
my friend has a 17L and the slide broke (details are sketchy at this point I haven't seen it) by the extractor. He is wondering if he can buy a regular 17 slide and use it on the 17L frame? Or if any one knows where he could buy a 17L slide? I told him to call glock and see what they could do for him.
ok got the pics.

17L, 34 and 17 use the same frame.
I'd expect it would be hard to find a 17L slide, but who knows. No slide is going to be cheap.
Of course he should contact Glock.
And how the heck did he break his slide? We require the details!

If all he had on there were factory parts, why not send it in to Glock?

Broke my 17 L early this year. Cracked verticaly at the front edge of the ejection port.
called Glock, told to ship to them with a note telling of the problem,
it was back in maybe three weeks with a new slide and new internals and new sights. NO CHARGE.

I have a friend with a 34 that had well over 100K through it. Nothing but reloads, chock full of aftermarket parts.
Broke the left-rear lug (rail) off the frame. Ran perfect until he found it during a detail-strip. Sent it in, and they replaced the frame for free. Most of the trigger parts and springs were replaced.
Cracked the slide at the front of the ejection port 2 weeks later. Began shooting 12" to the left at 10 yards, in the middle of a local IDPA match. Stripped the slide off and found the crack.
Sent it in, and got back a basically-new gun. The only thing we found that hasn't been replaced on either trip back to Glock was the barrel. Everything else is new.

Need to see photos to be sure but could be for the following reasons.
The frame at that point is weakest because the ejection port is there and there is no metal present like in the rest of the slide. Also, maybe the process of machining the ejection port may have caused microscopic stress in the metal around the ejection port areas. And also maybe because stress points develope where shapes change, such as a right angle or curves (think corners forming ejection port).
Or he might have just sat on the gun by mistake and broke it.

I've seen several pictures of cracked slides, right here on GT, and they all seem to crack in the same area. I wonder if it's because of they use cast slides, as opposed to machined bar stock or forged?

I buy Glocks for the same reason I buy from Larue Tactical. Other than building a superior product, customer satisfaction is paramount.
YMMV, but I sleep well.
im still waiting on pics he's is overseas

The slides are cast.
Pretty certain that they use CNC machined stock and do not cast their slides.
Cracked slides are not uncommon. I have busted 3 on a G17.

If you really knew what the metal was like under the Tenifer, you'd likey be shocked! :wow:
I do know, because I've welded on it and it's almost like pot-metal.
Yes, I've seen several cracked Glock slide but not always in the same place as the above pic. Some cracked at the breechface.
ok got the pics.
Let me just go ahead and get this outta' the way:
"I call BS, it's obviously photoshopped!"

Dry fire, anyone? I own eleven Glocks. I still buy Glocks, I just don't dryfire anymore than I have to.
