Video at the jump
SCOTTSDALE - An assistance dog calls 911 and saves his owner's life last week in Scottsdale.
A dispatcher with the Scottsdale Police Department took a call from an assistance dog who barked on the other end of the line.
The dog was trained to call 911 whenever his owner lays down and is unresponsive. All the buttons on the phone are preprogrammed to dial 911.
This isn't the first time the dog has called 911.

Smart dog - it would take a persistent and skilled traner to accomplish this
HERE (http://cbs2chicago.com/slideshows/smartest.dumbest.dogs.20.696673.html) is a link to what one CBS station reports as the 10 smartest and dumbest dog breeds.
And the Poodle ranks smarter than the German Shepard Dog ... go figure
ETA - not as amazing as the headline, I was wondering how the dog could "dial". The owner trained the animal to fetch the phone in an emergency (how the dog knowa ia pretty amazing), and he has every number on the phone programmed o call 911.
Still pretty cool.
The video at the jump is worth watching IMHO.
I'm no expert, but I know that a "full size" Standard Poodle is not to be messed with. They'll tear you up. I've seen them terrorize a Rottweiler.
Years ago I dated a woman who owned a toy poodle. He was very jealous of any man who gave his owner attention. The first night we went out we were going out of her front door when she went back inside to close her bedroom door. If she failed to do so when she was out with a man, he would piddle on her bed. True story.

I thought dog the bounty hunter couldn't give CPR!
A standard poodle can go over 80 pounds and sometimes over 100 (so-called Grand or Imperial). They are very smart and very athletic. Phenomenal water dogs for ducks, etc when their hair is correctly trimmed. Yes, hair, not fur. They do not shed.
None of this is to downgrade the GSD. There are actually several relatively intellingent dogs, although what I've read says that the smartest of dogs have an IQ equal to that of a human three-year old.
Love them all anyway.
This particular dog was very smart and very well trained. Great critter.

"911 Emergency."
"Bark bark woof, Barkbarkbark!"
"What's that, boy? Trouble at the old mill?"

I've had a few dogs on the list - the lab and the border collie. My daughter owns the cattle dog and Ken's family owns the Irish setter. They are all extremely intelligent and just wonderful dogs. I will own a doberman one day....and I would love to own a GSD as well. I have no time for stupid dogs.....well, I'd still love them, I just wouldn't bust my ass to own one.

I think this one is plotting someone's death....
So apparently trainability is how they determine intelligence. Nonsense. Chows are not stupid. They're obstinate. They know what you want. They just don't care.
Goldens on the other hand, are dumb as rocks. Labs aren't far behind (ahead?).

I had a golden - great hunter and (I thought) very smart. I'd shoot. If the dog didn't return right away, he was on scent. I'd just sit and wait for him to retrieve. Once it took him 1/2 hour to return - with the grouse.
As for poodles. I once had an American Water Spaniel.
"Upon crossing an Olde English Spaniel, the Irish Water Spaniel and the Curly Coat Retriever, the result was a compact water dog called the American Water Spaniel. Used for retrieving, the breed had everything hunters needed for swimming the marshy waters to locate and return downed waterfowl."
IIRC, the Irish was part poodle. This was a great hunting dog and very smart. I would rate 'smart' on the ability to figure out a problem in finding downed game One of two American breeds.

...One of two American breeds.
I had no idea any dog breeds started in America. From what I've seen on the TV, dogs started getting popular in the alte 1800'sand that is when the selective breeding process began in earnest.
Which 2 are american breeds?

I would suggest that you read up on the Rottweiler if you are not educated on that breed.
We have had several German Rotts and they are phenomenal creatures BUT you must train them properly or you will wind up with something you can not handle.
The breed is a power breed...incredibly strong, very smart, very trainable and very loving....but you have to train them the right way....I cant stress that enough.
Get them young from only a known bloodline, work with them, lots of hands on...lots of love.
A Rott raised properly will offer you a lifetime of devotion, love, entertainment, reward and protection....they can be giant goofs....that just so happen to have a jaw psi greater than shepards or pitts.
A Rott raised improperly is simply an owner asking for it. They are too big and too powerful to be the ones in control.
