View Full Version : I just purchased my first glock

It took me about a month but I just purchased my first ever gun. The first gun I ever held or shot was a glock 19 and even though I absolutely loved the 19 I ended up opting for a 17.
I haven't actually had a chance to shoot it yet and so far have only gotten to take it out and hold it for a few minutes at a time. Regardless of the fact that I haven't been able to do much with it yet I am completely in love :)
Now I am awaiting the time off to be able to take it out and shoot it for the first time.
Oh, I am also trying to figure out what holster I would like to get for it and when I do get my permit to carry I know that with the gun being a full size concealment is going to be a little bit of a challenge. The size of the gun coupled with my style of clothing limit my options on placement from what I figure. I do still want to carry it on my waist from time to time but for year round concealment I am thinking my only option is to ankle carry. If anyone has any suggestions on where to look for the proper holster or any other suggestions I am open to the advice. Thank you all for taking the time to read this :)

You would need ankles like a Clydesdale for the G17.

X2 and thats a funny way of putting it lol!
I am like you in the fact that i only own 1 glock but i can imagine it would be great fun to buy another one when it comes time to conceal. you can never have enough glocks is what i hear:tongueout:

Ha, well that sucks because I don't have large ankles at all lol
I just assumed with the pants style that I wear that it would hide the glock better. I usually wear a fitted shirt and my jeans are all low waist but flared at the ankle and I knew that there would be no way to conceal on the waist unless I wore non fitted tees/sweaters. But again I did not think about the fact that even though I could hide it with the pants that the gun is still large and my ankles thankfully are not.
Now I need to rethink my original plan :)
I don't carry yet, but i have a g17 also. I'm about 6'2 and weigh around 230 and i can see how it could be a pain in the ass to conceal as it is a full size. You might not want to hear this but, you may want to save up for a compact since they are well-suited for your needs. I'd like to get my hands on the 30sf....eventually.

It actually doesn't bother me when I hear that I may need to buy another for concealed carry because that just gives me a good excuse to use when I say I need another glock lol
I may be biased since it was the first and only gun I ever held, shot, or saw before but I have to say so far glocks are my favorite so having more then one is not going to be an issue for me :)
So now I ask for yet another recommendation--I like the length of the grip on the 17 and 19 because they feel better in my hand. What would be a good recommendation on my next purchase of one that I can conceal but at the same time not lose the length of the grip?
I would say you should first decide on what caliber you would like to carry for self-defense. After that has been established go to your local gun shop and handle all the possible compact options for that caliber. Next, decide on which feels most comfortable to you and try to envision how you might conceal it on your person.:)

Congrats on the new G17, and welcome. Now... For the bad news. As a large-framed guy (6'2"/225) who doesn't mind slumming around in a pair of baggy jeans and an untucked/oversized baseball jersey... I can effectively conceal a full-sized Glock pistol, and do from time to time.
Unfortunately, for a female who prefers to wear form-fitting shirts and hip-hugging jeans (Not that there's anything wrong with it)... A full-size simply doesn't lend itself to concealment. The idea of ankle carry with a G17 is probably a lost cause for just about anyone, much less a small framed person.
That is where the bad news starts, but not where it ends. If you are partial to the hand-filling grip of a full size gun, and feel that a G19 is getting toward the smaller side of what you prefer... Your clothing style is going to make CCW difficult.
The fact is that the grip of a pistol (in general) is the part of the weapon that creates a challenge for concealment. If you opt for IWB (Inside the waistband) carry... You can hide a gun with an unwieldy barrel with little difiiculty. But, if the grip is too long, it will print badly through your clothing, and makes cocealment a challenge.
If you are serious about CCW, I'd say you have a few options. First, you can compromise on your clothing style by dressing around your G17 (although, I can imagine this is easier said than done for most women). Or, you can try to carry with a fanny-pack/purse designed speciffically for concealed carry, or other alternative method of carry. If all else fails... I'd say your only real option would be to get used to the idea of a sub-compact model and go with one of those for CCW. Personally, even on my large frame... I carry a sub-compact G33 as my back-up/off duty, and I can't imagine going back to a larger framed CCW gun. Best of luck to you whatever you decide to do.

I thank all of you who have taken the time to give suggestions or just comment back on my post :)
I am thinking that buying another glock is going to be my best bet. I would actually be happy with owning multiple guns so having a glock specifically for the purpose of concealed carry is not going to upset me lol
My 17 will always be my first and favorite gun but that doesn't mean I can't have another to carry.
Winter will probably be the only time I can dress around my 17 so I may still get to carry it from time to time but I can go through and find another smaller gun to carry when the 17 is not an option.
Last but not least (I know I should probably post this on the holsters forum) What are the best/yet affordable sites to find holsters?
Again thank you all for your suggestions. I am already looking into other guns and finding it just as exciting as the day I went looking and found the 17.

The purse "made" for concealed carry would be your best bet for the G17.
Congrats!!! Sounds like enough people have explained the challenges of concealing a 17 so I'll leave it alone! I have a 26 for everyday carry and I love it! I wear designer (tight) tshirts and it disapears under them!! Highly suggest looking into it if you like 9mm Glocks!!

If you want to carry on body and want 9mm then the g26 sounds like your best choice. Since you mentioned a longer grip, try the 26 with a fingertip extension on the magazine floorplate. You will find that it gives you more grip but still maintains concealability.
Congrats and welcome to the forum. I'll go along with many of the suggestions that most have already made. The 26 is a nice gun, but trying to conceal just about any gun in tight clothes will be a challenge. Some kind of purse or fanny pack may be your best bet.

Keep the G17 for a home or range weapon and get a G19 or G26 for carry. If you're a jeans and tshirt person, order a Crossbreed Supertuck holster.
