and this time he's got his head on straight :whistling:

(Madame Tussaud's in Berlin and re-installed the Hitler figure after an enraged Berliner ripped it's head off during it's first day of display).

Wow, the Berlin museum is catching a lot of flack for having a Hitler figurine on display.

I find that odd-- do the Germans really want to pretend that Hitler is not an important part of their history? That's hard to do.

The bad guys in history have, unfortunately, more dramatic influence on events than the good guys.

I guess we are supposed to both hide the fact that Hitler existed, while still vowing never to repeat the Nazi-era mistakes?

That seems rather illogical.

Sneak up behind a German and click your heels together.

See if their right hand doesn't reflexively come up a little before they stop it!

I don't know if they are pretending that Hitler isn't an important part of their history, but the war is certainly a very sore spot with them. It seems to me that the Germans have collective sense of guilt about WWII.

the scene in Apt Pupil when Ian McKellan (sp?) puts on the Nazi uniform and marches in place in his kitchen is still one of the most disturbing scenes in film, to me, anyway.

I think it's disturbing because the story is so very real.

A friend of mine knew a classmate from VMI who had spent time in Germany a few years back. His opinion is that the majority of Germans don't feel shame about WWII. They're pissed they lost if anything. He also says anti-semitism is amazingly real, like Germany is waiting for the right conditions to start up the camps again.

Thats one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. I have lots of family members that visit Germany on a regular basis and I visited a few times in high school. The opinion I got was the complete opposite.

All the Germans I got personal with asked me how could Americans be so patriotic. They think patriotism is bad because of what Hitler did. Most wouldn't even talk about Hitler. They are ashamed of it and wish it to be forgotten.

No worries. I apologize if I was insulting. It was nothing personal but seriously that info just sounds crazy from what I experienced in Germany. Hell my dad spends months at a time there for work and he says the same things I just said.

Could it be that general German sentiments regarding patriotism and things of the past in vary by region?

If one European visited rural Alabama and another visited San Fransisco, I gather each would come away with very different understandings regarding American sentiment on political and historical issues. Could be the same thing here.

That was from a really great mini-series that came out about 1990. The actor is scarry as hell. He looks and sounds like Hitler.

There are indeed differences between reigions of course but for the most part they are not such extreme differences. Remember that Germany is rather tiny compared to the USA.

Please help me out a bit.....

What is Apt. Pupil (movie, t.v. show?) and what is it about.

All I saw in the clip was an arrogant child giving orders to an ex-nazi,
then the ex-nazi really getting the rythm back, and then the child making a
dookie in his pants.

Yes, they do. Germany is such a castrated nation now. It's a liberal hell hole.

If they continue to let conditions worsen, they'll see a strong nationalist movement again.

It's a movie made from a Stephen King novel.

A local high school boy, Todd Bowden, discovers Nazi war criminal Kurt Dussander living in his neighborhood under the assumed name Arthur Denker. Rather than turn Dussander over to the authorities, Todd makes a strange deal where Dussander will tell him "what it felt like" during the Holocaust of World War II in exchange for Todd's silence. Todd becomes an "apt pupil" of the horror stories Dussander tells and the two enter into a bizarre relationship of mixed hate and friendship culminating when Todd helps Dussander cover up a vicious murder. I have a father-in-law who was stationed in Germany for years, and apparently well liked by Germans since his demeanor was similar in temperment. He echos part of this sub-thread. Many an angry German over the loss in WWII, he wasn't so sure that given the right nudge they wouldn't try to conquer the world again. Not so sure about the ovens though.

Looks like the Nazis have moved on to Minnesota, doesn't it, "Otto Skorzeny". Are you also singing this nice song in your signature when sitting around the campfire with your buddies?

Wow, Otto Skorzeny (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_Skorzeny#After_World_War_II)! And you even put the first verse of the Anthem of the Nazi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horst-Wessel-Lied) Party in your sig line.

I know, personally, I enjoy getting out the old Nazi uniform and signing the Nazi Anthem around the campfire.

It is an interesting time in history. I have several books written by soldiers and sailors of the Reich.

Right along with American, French, English, Japanese, Italian and Norweigan.

But it makes for an interesting avatar. I wondered how long it would take for anyone to notice it.

There were, at best I know, only about 39 SS divisions. A more rare one could have gone unoticed for a while. One of the Hungarian divisions that "vanished" on the Eastern front for example. They simply disolved under Russian pressure.

But the name? That wasn't hard to pick out.
