View Full Version : Back to 10mm w/a new G29
After owning both G20's and G29's in the past and selling/trading them away, I went and bought a new G29 w/Meps today. I like the idea of having a CCW that works well against two and four legged animails. Right now I have it loaded with Win 175gr Silvertips and I know all the 10mm fans will tell me to get some Double-Tap, which I'll do but - what are some other main name factory brands I should look at local gun shops for a ccw load? What do you guys prefer as a ccw load?
Thanks in advance. ;)

I'm still trying to find out more about that Mag Safe Ammo, and whether it really works as well as they claim.
www.magsafeonline.com
I like the idea of big-time man-stopping power without shooting through walls and hitting neighbors. And then still having the option of using the 200 or 230 grain Double Tap's for bear protection.
BTW way: As I was browsing for cheap practice ammo yesterday, another salesman told me that 10MM was a "dying caliber". But I noticed that every time that particular store gets in any 10MM ammo, it sells out really fast. It's always the first thing they run out of.

Silvertips are as good as it gets as far as "Gun Store" 10mm ammo goes.
Only other options are
Double Tap
Georgia Arms
Reloading your own.
:wavey:
Oh ya, I prefer 180gr xtp's as an everyday carry load, and 200gr xtp's for rural settings.

Stick with solid lumps of metal, designed to expand a bit, and you should be OK.

I only use Magsafe for the round in the spout, and that only for the possibility of a first shot-head shot stop. Magsafes do not always open as advertised, but they have extreme velocity and "bite" to facilitate those headshots. Otherwise Gold Dots, DPX, Rangers, and several others are better all around SD loads
Awesome choice. I love my 29.
Yep, just makes me smile when i see another 10mm owner. Congrats, looks just like mine!

Very interesting article. Thanks for that. I believe I will stick with the 165 grain Speer Gold Dots from Double Tap as my primary man-stoppers.
I wish Glock would have made them with a regular length grip......

My G29 is my everyday CCW piece. It is accurate with very little muzzle flip. I really like the pistol.

I gotta get a G29. I'd almost consider trading my G30 for one, but, I love my G30 and would miss it. Probably so much, I'd end up getting another one. Rule #1. Never get rid of any guns(unless you get a POS on accident) I sold a Dan Wesson stainless 4" .357 once, because it wouldn't hit the side of a barn...and that was standing inside the barn:supergrin:

That's exactly how I felt ......since having had G20's and G29's in the past, I just kept thinking (and reading) that it is one of the best dual purpose calibers against two and four legged creatures and decided to change from my G26 as my primary CCW to the little larger G29...........and a j-frame for when the pocket is your only carry option. ;)

As an owner of a G29 and G30, I will say that I would not sell your G30 to get a G29 (get both). I will not part with either of these pistols and they are the only two I use for carry purposes. IMO, they are the two best pistols that Glock has produced (aside from the G17:supergrin:).

I can't believe someone hasn't said Corbon. They got plenty of options: DPX, traditional JHP, Hunting, Powerball, and even Glaser Safety for those who believe in miracles. They're not the cheapest though, and I don't really know if anyone would take them over DT. They have a lot to offer though.
Some people don't believe in the 175 gr. Silvertip ballistics readings, but apparently they're truly as hot as posted. In other words, they seem to be pretty tasty especially for your store loads.
And in other words, 10mm is hard to beat.
Yep, I like Corbon, too. It just seems like the Silvertips are more common on local gun store shelfs.

The 20 & 29 are truely impressive fire power when shot with hot rounds. Delayed getting into th 10 MM for to long and finally had to do it. No regrets as this bad gun is the top favorite packer around here now.
Enjoy the 29, great choice.
Is a Glock 29 the same size as a Glock 30?
Thanks,
Nic
Sorry for the threadjack.
I love my new G20, the best Glock pistol ever, with the best ammo! ;-)

For the clean up/house clearing/anti-looting job this weekend in Houston-Galveston I'll be carring 200gr Horandy JHP XTP.

Hopefully, we'll see a G20SF at the 2009 Shot Show!
I have been getting Remington, I think 180gr FMJ ammo. Shoots well enough for the range, I have Hornady's JHP for SD. 155gr I think:dunno:. they both fire good. I am getting some DT soon though.. f3
Is a Glock 29 the same size as a Glock 30?
Thanks,
Nic
Sorry for the threadjack.
In terms of shape dimensions, yes (though the G30 is slightly taller in height). They fit in the very same holsters.
In terms of weight, no. The G29 is heavier with an empty mag (compared to the G30). The G30 is heavier with a full mag (10 rounds - compared to the G29 with 10 rounds).
See the 2nd chart for comparison:

With all due respect, I'm not sure you should be asking what other brands make factory 10mm loads, but rather, which Doubletap loads will work best for your needs. IMHO, no one else even comes close to matching the DT's performance (MAYBE Buffalo Bore), and you can pay a lot more for a lesser round. They've also got so many 10mm offerings--from 135 gr. Noslers to 230 gr. Equalizers--that it's hard to decide which ones to choose. I know that some shops even stock them now, so call around. Good luck from another very happy G29 owner!

+1 on that.
Good deal on the G29!! That's my future CCW gun as soon as I turn 21 & move out of state...

MrGlock21 beat me to it, but Hornady 200gr XTP JHP's are what gets stocked in my mag as well. They load nice hot rounds that take advantage of the heavier bullet. My 357 sig loads are Hornady 168gr XTP JHP's also. They're just so good... If you're looking for extra penetration power you could swap to a 160-180 gr FMJ, but some people don't feel comfortable using FMJ for self defense. Whatever you choose will almost certainly be adequate, however. You are carrying one of the strongest calibers available for a semi-auto after all.
THe more I read about the 10mm the more I want one.!
Same here but I come back to reality and realize that I can't get the ammo locally and if I order, it will be cost prohibitive and I don't reload. So I'll just stick with my .45 ACP and .357 magnum handguns and dream about 10mm.
