View Full Version : Need help fast! Breeder said GSD had fleas!
I just got a call from my breeder. She went and picked up the puppies at the owner of the female half of the equation's home. She said that the pups had fleas.
She said she gave them a bath in pomolive dish detergent. But I'm VERY worried about eggs and such if I were to bring it home.
The vet said they can give us "capstar" or frontline but only after seeing it for a visit ($150 since it's an emergency vet).
The breeder said just to be safe, keep him in the kitchen until we see the vet monday.
Again, I'm freaked out about egg and if this will be a re-occuring problem.
We pick up the dog within the hour so any help would be much appreciated!!!
Thanks!

So, a dog that you haven't picked up yet has fleas, and the people who ARE responsible are taking care of it. What's the problem?
Dogs have been getting fleas for the ages. Humans get them too. Toughen up, because if you're in a panic over this, you're going to be in a world of hurt when you have a kid.

If you can't afford the cost of flea treatment, you might reconsider getting the dog.

go to a feed store and get purina mange control. pint? bottle. several year supply. yes, mange control, it kills mites, ear mites, ticks, and fleas. dilute, dip, wait a week, repeat. change bedding with each dip.
we raised german shepherds for K9, many. this works and no bs. has creosote in it, besides the poison, you can smell it for days, do it outdoors.
you might find it at a pet store or walmart, but more likely a rural feed store.
I'll agree if you can't dip a dog you shouldn't have one.
Dude, this is NOT something that requires going to the ER Vet. Seriously. Relax and try not to have a heart attack when the puppy wets the floor or eats something he's not suppsed to, k?

Well, first he'd have to clean up the puddle he made after discovering it.
No offense OP, but seriously, RELAX.

It's a simple fact... dogs get fleas. But don't ever use a dip on your dog and refrain from Frontline until the pup is old enough to use safely. The fleas will not leave the dog and invade your home. They prefer the dog as a meal. Take the pup and give it lot's of love. When he's of age you can treat the fleas within the veterinarian's guidelines.
I went to the animal shelter and adopted a border collie pup last year. She had fleas and mange but I couldn't resist that face. There was never an issue. We managed the problem in accordance with the vet's recommendations. She's the best buddy I could ask for. I have two protection trained GSD's yet she herds the kids and other dogs when we call them. The fleas were never a problem.
no offense but if you are bent out of shape about fleas at the moment , you should reconsider a puppy cause you are in for more trouble then fleas . just my 2 cents.
I like Sevins dust and Boric acid. If you get a flea problem, coat the dog in either and bug bomb the house. Then spread more of either throughout the house and yard. Then kill every animal that gets within yards of your house, squirrels, rabbits, rats, cats anything with fur.
My flea problem is bad during the summer, and the city frowns on shooting in the limits, so the squirrels are a big cause for me.
I was going to 2nd, 3rd and 4th folks here, but for crying out loud, do the pup a favor and DON'T go through with the purchase/adoption/whathaveyou.
Seriously, the poor thing is going to end up neurotic if you react like this to every little thing.
Get a goldfish...... better yet, nevermind.

Personally, I wouldn't pick up the dog with fleas. They will invade your house and it will be a pain to get rid of them.

1. Go to feed store and purchase flea dip.
2. Mix per instructions.
3. Dip that Sum Bit.h.
4. Problem solved.
There are plenty of Flea foggers and systemic applications to the Dog that will interrupt the life cycle of the Flea out there to be had. Be prepared to use em and you can break that cycle fairly easy if your observant and diligent.

No sweat. Capstar is great stuff and will kill all live fleas on the dog also get something like Frontline to kill them as the eggs hatch on the dog. I use Sentinel which is a pill that kills fleas and ticks but also controls heart worms, works great.

 Me too ... A GSD is a smart, strong minded breed that needs to have a "job" and be "worked" regularly, no offense EMT, but I already feel sorry for the hound ... either grow a set or get a coon hound.

I couldn't agree more with the above - the infestation occurred at the breeders property, a breeder worth a crap would resolve this before releasing the dog.
If they don't, find another breeder.
You may really want to consider another breed dude ... you gotta be able to think stuff like this through, or the dog will rule the roost.
