I had a buddy today that almost got a ticket/citation today from the game warden for shooting his guns at a public shooting range. Has anyone ever heard of this? I'm sure it's true and there's a reason for it, but I just find it odd. Wondering if anyone else has had the same experience.

I have never heard of it.

BTW, it may help to know what state you are in.

Sounds like there was something else involved "at the shooting range" (hint - the target(s) involved) LOL.

Well, I guess I just didn't look long enough.....there are certain public ranges in Alabama that a hunting license is required.

I'm sure it's that way in other states....never would have guessed.

Wow, me either ... our Public ranges are operated by the state conversation department.

At least the guy was civil with him and did not issue a citation when he was well within his rights.

This directory was made possible largely because of hunters. The Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries operates on revenues derived through the sale of hunting and fishing licenses, as well as Federal taxes and duties which sportsmen pay on hunting, fishing, and boating equipment. Federal funds are provided to the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries through the Federal Aid to Wildlife Restoration Act. This program was enacted in 1937 by Congress at the request of the nation’s hunters. The revenue is used to operate wildlife management areas, conduct wildlife research and surveys, hunter education, species restoration, and many other activities of the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries. The symbol shown above left is displayed at all projects which receive Wildlife Restoration funds.

The hunting license is just to pay for the fees of the range - like a tax.

A lot of that in Europe. Only a hunter can have a gun, hence, you must be a hunter. (Yeah, I realize this is a GROSS oversimplification, more of a cultural tendency. And, my research is a couple of decades out of date.)

Gun laws are intrinsically arbitrary. In a lot of countries a silencer (yeah, suppressor), is no big deal. They are even thought commendable, as a farmer or game warden can handle varmints and pests without disturbing the neighbors. Here in USA, an unlicensed supressor is federal time.

Illegal in my state.

Well as far as Title 18 chapter 44 firearms USC goes - sound suppressors arent illegal. I would check the local laws for your respective state though ;).

I don't know if it is still a law in Idaho, but to carry a gun out onto public lands a person must have a hunting license or a CCW permit.

Our local rifle range is on private land and so I don't know if you need a license to target practice there. But if you go outside of that I would think you would. I think of it you need a license to hunt on private land so why not at the range?

Yeah man! I have heard of that in my area too. One must have atleast one of the following: pistol permit, hunting lics.

In Ohio the DNR supports several public ranges on state land. That is how they fund them. I sometimes use the one at Spring Valley, it is a nice facility.

Here we have a range permit.
As long as all fees go toward the range and the range oficer, I don't mind.
