View Full Version : Thinking Of A New Palm Phone

I've got an older Treo 650 and Alltel is my carrier. Not gonna switch, don't even try it.
I've got the options of a Treo 700wx or a 755p.
I don't "need" a new phone, but I kinda want one. Mine works pretty damned well for its age, but it has never been able to send an e-mail w/ the POP3 account, and yes, the outgoing server is correct. It just never sends...
The 700wx uses the Windows OS while the 755 is the Palm OS; I think they're still on 5.0, but I'm not sure.
What I can't really figure out is what's the real difference b/t what I have now and the newer phones. Can I ACTUALLY play a video from YouTube? Does it work w/ Java? I can't find any info on any of this stuff.
Should I upgrade ($99 cost) or should I just keep my phone and wait for a REAL change from Palm?
Go with a Blackberry. You will be much happier.

NOPE.
I like the Palm OS.
I like the touchscreen.
I have many, MANY Palm apps.
I just noticed the Treo Pro -- 400mhz, new Windows OS, GPS navigation, stereo headset, WiFi. Damned sweet.
Problem -- $549 pricetag and in pre-order status. I can IMAGINE the bugs. Might just wait a year until Alltel has this thing for a better price.
I love Alltel -- it rocks around here, but they're stuck in the stoneage when it comes to high-speed mobile internet and good phone selections.
Bleh.

If you had an iPhone, there is an App you could download to fix Alltel.:whistling: Eric

Are you saying an iPhone will work on Alltel's network? For some odd reason, I don't think Alltel uses SIMM cards like everyone else does.
So, I can crack an iPhone, eh? And it will work reliably?
I have the Treo 755P. I tried the WX but it has a smaller resolution screen than the 700P or 755P for some reason. Tried out a Sprint Mogul and hated the short battery life and lag of the Windows OS....Palm OS doesn't look snazzy but it is pretty quick and I rarely have any problems with it crashing or freezing. And yeah, I can watch youtube videos with sound on my phone. Quality isn't as good as a laptop but it's a great time waster if you are at an airport or long line. One great thing about all Palm Treos is that you can use it with one hand only easily, which I do while in a traffic jam at 0mph.
Cell phone ADD, lol

I was joking, but to answer your question, the iPhone has been hacked and can be unlocked. You would have to do some research online to see if it would work with Alltel, but it is my understanding that the unlocked iPhone will work with any US carrier that uses a Simm card. Eric
BTW, Alltell did use SIMMs when I was with them, three or four years ago. EP

Nope. The iPhone will only work on GSM networks. Alltel is CDMA. The iPhone most definitely will not work on their network.

Oh well. that is tough luck. It is one hell of a phone. I got rid of a Treo 650 a while back and I do not miss it one bit. To me, it seems like the absolute pinnacle of yesterday's technology, whereas the iPhone is a hesitant, but purposeful stab at tomorrow's. Eric

That's what I thought.
Isn't CDMA old school?
Did Verizon buy Alltel or not? If so, I wonder if Alltel will move to a GSM network? Sure would be nice. The internet is SLOW AS HELL on Alltel...but better than nothing. I'd rather have reception EVERYWHERE than a fast web connection.
ERIC -- any way to format GT to a mobile friendly version w/ minimal cost?

Verizon did buy Alltel. However, Verizon is CDMA as well, which is why the acquisition made sense. They are essentially dealing with the same technology platform and won't need to do a lot of conversion.

There are software systems that would rewrite GT's pages dynamically to work properly with the different mobile systems, but it would be a bit costly, complicated and I think that in a year or two, it will be obsolete. The iPhone is the first of a new generation of phones and a sign of things to come, IMO. The iPhone can render HTML pages properly and I imagine the copycat phones that have come out since its release probably can as well. I believe that in the near future, all internet-capable phones will have a similar capability. Unless a cheap and simple way comes along to accommodate older style data phones, this is probably not a course I am going to pursue. Sorry about that. Eric

GT looks great on the Opera browser on the Blackberry platform as well.

Understood.
I just didn't know if was a "simple" thing. As you can tell, I'm clueless in that department.
The Palm Treo Pro uses a Windows 6.x and an "advanced" IE browser; I wonder if it could disect HTML like the iPhone...? :dunno:

Yeah, it "looks" fine on the Palm, as well. However, it takes all damned day to load. IIRC, it honestly takes ~1 minute plus for a page to load.

I don't think the Palm supports 3G like the newer Blackberries do.

Phones like the Treo try to interpret HTML, but they do so poorly. The pages end up being a jumbled mess, unless it is a very simple page to start with. The magic of phones like the iPhone is that it renders the page and then scales the whole page as a unit, rather than trying to scale each component of the page, as it reads the markup. These new phones are very clever. Eric

Get a blackberry. Palm sucks, the windows os palms suck as well. If you want email, blackberry is king. The os is also way more stable. If you want to reset your phone several times a day, get a palm phone.
The one thing I might do is create a theme with a very simple page layout, that is light on graphics and tables, that can be used by mobile viewers. I'll look into it, when I get a chance. Also, maybe I will look into a premium subscriber RSS feed, if phones like yours have RSS readers available. Eric

+1 my good man. Blows the factory browser out the water.

You can fight progress if you like, but touch screens are the future. Fewer moving parts, fewer things to break and more flexible/configurable. They make more sense and the rest of us are going to have to get used to them. I wasn't crazy about the touch keyboard no the iPhone, when I first got it, but I like it fine now and can type fairly quickly. I am typing this message on it. Eric

Yes, I too like posting from my phone, pretty cool.
Im very interested to see how the new BB will do though.

Alltel does support EVDO, though. CDMA EVDO is much faster than CDMA 1x service.
My blackberry only supports EDGE, but EDGE is all I have (here) on the ATT network. There is no 3G yet (here). We keep Alltel PC cards for our wireless internet users b/c it is MUCH faster than ATT's EDGE.
See if either of the new Palms supports EVDO for data service, then see if it's on in your area. That should help your browsing speed significantly.
The new, new blackberry is supposed to be a touchscreen as well. They are calling it the "i-phone killer". No idea when it will be out.

Never had that problem...

Again, it isn't too bad. I crash about once every 3 weeks...maybe.
I deal with it. A trade-off for having a PDA that I enjoy.
I had and loved my kyocera palm o/s phone for many years primarily because i liked the palm "grafiti" I moved to blackberry so I could get emails pushed out from standard pop3 accounts... I just bought the brand new curve a couple of months ago and thought it was cool the way it seemlessly transitioned calls and contacts and wifi...
Enter the new iphone G3. All I can say is wow.... what an expensive piece of garbage the curve is now!
So the moral of this story is loose your palm stylus for an hour to check out the newest iphone at the store first before you throw money at anything else.
throw money at another smart phone.
