Are there any jobs/careers that pay well that nobody wants, or have less interest than your typical cop, teachers, etc... careers? Just curious.

Computer programmer. Computer technician. Lots of computer-oriented jobs can pay a lot, more than I make as a welder anyway, but I just couldn't do it. I couldn't sit on my ass for 10 hours a day behind a monitor in a cubicle somewhere. Nope, couldn't do it.

Roughneck or work for a companys like Schlumberge (sp?) that work with natural gas out in the middle of nowhere working 90+ hours a week for a few months at a time. The pay is great but thats because of the lack of people able or willing to do it.

I don't have a cubicle but I do sit for long periods of time.. I like it.

You can get entry level IT jobs for KBR right now that pay really well if you like sand.

Dude, if a computer technician makes more than you, I would suggest finding a new employer. Welders in my neck of the woods are $35-40/hour as an employee or $1000/day with your own truck working in Fort McMurray.

Well, If you want to move to Grand Junction, Colorado, and have oilfield experience, then you can go to work for my company making somewhere around 10-12k a month. The district manager over the Grand Jusction district is based out of our office, and he tried to recruit me the other day for 15K+ a month up there.

The job? Wireline.

good welders who are able to qualify are in short supply and pay is good. i see alot that "can weld pretty good" from being in the car repair or working on the farm sort of jobs can't do anything as far as passing a test or RT examination.

I clean up Explosives and Military ordnance that was dumped or left by the military back in the early 1900's, this includes the clean up of old chemical weapons materials.

This job also keeps me away from my wife and kids for most of the year. The only perk of this job is I get payed well.

Oh yeah the job title is Unexploded Ordnance Technician.

Just out of curiosity what kind of education does someone have to have in order to get that job?

I have no wife and kids and I'm looking for a new career path.

Most of us in this field are Ex-Military Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technicians.

Sales!

Very good sales people do make good money and make even better once they hit management positions. One of my co-workers said, "I wouldn't want a job where they told me I could only make a certain amount a month".

Very optimistic statement and definately not for everybody. I'm gonna see how it pans out myself, been kinda rough on me, with the hours, stress, and all.

Well I guess that counts me out. I worked aircraft electronics.

I understand there is a course offered in Texas that teaches this kind of material but from what little reading I've done the field is dominated by former military EOD people.

Thanks anyway.

+1

I can get by with mig tig and stick from tech college training. However nothing pretty nor water tight -- know it. I greatly admire welders who can run a consistent and beautiful bead all day long and pass the tests! They are worth what they receive!

The jobs have some of these elements in common:
- danger
- dirty
- war zone work
- physically difficult
- unusual hours (month on month off for instance)
- low prestige (trash comes to mind)
- requires technical proficiency not all have the capability to learn
- undesriable (usually includes one or more of above)

Engineers are in short supply especially battery engineers.

Healthcare jobs in admin available -- billings all levels

+1 sales always has paid among the highest of all when done well and industry / product chosen well. Problem is not all can sell and fewer can handle the daily rejection and go to the next call and sell again.

Computer systems -- if you get certified by microsoft in systems you are prepared to pull down a high salary and earn it.

Utterly amazing

I have a buddy from a past life who is a pilot who drops these guys off at their location of choice. Normally, it's in remote locations. But none-the-less flying up right next to the lines is a pretty gutsy thing too.

Anyway. I think it looks like a lot of fun. I'd try it. You only make one mistake.

Kind of like bomb disposal. You only blow yourself up once.

Military. Pays better than many expect. Not for everyone. Lot's of job choices. Can suck real bad (think sandbox), can be awesome (think Europe).

Toxic cleanup. Got a buddy who's been doing it for 25 years, in the same place, making really good coin, working for the Feds. Makes me wonder about career choices sometimes.
