Dylan was the original but there are many (better) covers out there.
I think GNR nailed it personally. Kinda like Metallica's Whiskey in the Jar is the better song than the original.

Hey, hey, hey, hey, yeah.
Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowah.
Yeah, Axl really nailed it.
Now if we were discussing "All Along the Watch Tower", or "Voodoo Chile", I'd agree with you.
Not that GNR's cover is bad, mind you, but it's only a different take, not truly better.
Hendrix perfected "Watch Tower", and SRV perfected "Voodoo Chile".
GNR merely made "Heaven's DoahWoe" different, just as they did with "Live and Let Die".
"Ya Yu Tu Say Live and Let Lieaauuhve". ;)
FWIW, I taught Axl how to "dance". ;)

Just his style, I like it apparently you don't.
Personally, I like "One in a Million" the best.

Agreed. Just a different style. It's damned good!
I DO like it, but I don't think it's better, just different.
"One in a Million" is good stuff.
I LOVE GNR! I just think that others have done it just as well.
Nobody is a bigger Waters/Gilmour/Pink Floyd fan than me, but I must agree with RamJet, Dylan did it best. This was way better than Guns N Roses, which was OK. The Grateful Dead have some great recordings of this tune as well.

Zevon hands down.
Zevon's right up there, but Dylan's version, given the movie and the circumstances, put it at the top. The pain of the song is palatable. Said that, it came to fruition much quicker with Zevon, sadly.

I admit I'm partial to the Guns 'n' Roses version too.
Axl may be a slimeball, but even he had his moments.

The Thin Lizzy version really sucks in my opinion. Yeah, I know it's the original, but Metallica nailed it. Actually pretty much their whole Garage Inc album rocks

I finally got a connection where I can hear the Roger Waters version.
I gotta say that it sounds pretty good, but I also gotta agree with the person who commented that the background singers weren't up to par. Roger has historically had the best background vocalists on the planet, but these weren't top shelf.
I wasn't even aware, until this thread, that Roger remade this song.
I have always thought that if I was killed in the line of duty, I would want this song at my funeral, the Dylan version. Just sounds like a song that belongs at a cop's funeral.
Not to put a dark pall over the thread, just thought it might be cool is all, Not if I was dead, but, you know, if I were to die..........

gnr the greatest version ever? blasphemy.
axl r's voice is grating.... makes ME wish i was the one knocking...
dylan's version captures perfectly a lawman's crisis of conscience.
zevon's is worthy, especially considering the context. wz was an enthusiastic gun guy, btw, unlike most of his socal music world associates.

Would be a bummer for sure if the blue flame of righteousness got extinguished, but the song would indeed be fitting. ;)
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid
True dat, brothers and sissies.........I just recently watched the movie again, and Bobs' version, by the way, he wrote the song, and they keep going back to the slow music intro of it durring particular sections of the movie....no one does it like Dylan.
Bob the Dylan is also IN the movie....almost a silent part, but he does get to bash a cowboy with the butt end of a rifle, in one scene at the bar....
Bob wrote and played the entire movie score, which isn't surprising , considering it was made on a tiny budget....and it keeps returning to the theme, a slow, 3 chord , almost a funeral dirge....
I do like alternative versions of songs, though, and I warmed up to Guns and Roses after a while, too bad the singer became such a flake, Axel is a talented singer , for the genre....I wish they could have kept from disintegrating....
I am out
