I looked at some of the Magpul videos where their two instructor guys are using them. They are laying their thumb parallel to the barrel, extended forward and resting on the fore grip. I think they are going for grip consistency since it looks similar to a thumbs forward position with a pistol.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/kilrain/Public%202/5e14fcb2.jpg
I don't think it's any better or worse based on what I saw in the videos and "looks" a bit strange to me however if it works for them or someone else, more power to them.
It doesn't look like he's using one. ?
It doesn't look like he's using one. ?
Perhaps he's not, hard to tell but I recall those fellas having numerous shotguns of various types. Some had the triangle fore grip thing, some didn't.
Either way, I assume it's to assist in the type of "thumb forward" hand grip he has in the picture I posted and that they apparently use/advocate. I can see that with that type of hand grip on a standard, parallel to the bore, type of fore grip could cause issues in that it seems to "break" or bend the wrist forward and down a bit. The triangle thing it seems could help to reduce or prevent the wrist "break" or bend.

I kept all the original parts (wood stock and forend, 28" vent rib remchoke barrel), but here's how the 870 looks now...

Gonna move the Eotech up when I find a good ghost ring sight for the picatinny rail. Had the Burris Fastfire 3 on it but felt better with Eotech on the shotgun and FF3 on the AK.

Not really something I would have put together, but I got it for a hundred bucks from a desperate friend. It's a Mossberg 500 with a ported slugster barrel. Why would you need a ported barrel on a pump gun?,and how hard is it to change barrels?

Changing barrels on a 500 is really easy--just pull the slide halfway back and unscrew the cap on the end of the magazine tube.

Magpul forend, factory Remington stock, Mesa Tactical 6-round side saddle, and inside there's a heavy sear spring and the carrier dog follower spring from a Tactical model. Don't mind the thing around the stock, it's just a wall hanger for guitars.

Not really tactical, but I call it practical tactical. My do it all 870 Super Magnum, this is HD set up, this barrel is the 21" turkey barrel which is perfect for HD and 3 gun I feel, but have a slug barrel and 28" barrel for hunting and trap. Just got done refinishing the ugly blonde stock in a custom stain and poly.

Just finished up this build. Always wanted a Marine shotgun so found a steal on a new 500 Mariner. Added a ATI Talon stock which is awesome and really helps with recoil, a ATI shell holder rather than the cheek riser, Meprolight front night sight, and a laserlyte tube rail for a light.

You going to loose the factory stock? Even something like the Hogue would give you a shorter LOP, grippier surface, mad more solid feel. Or the SGA would be a great addition to the forend...it has stunning ergonomics despite the odd appearance.

Funny you say that... I've been flip-flopping on stocks lately. I picked up a Hogue 14" or whatever (not the 12"), and I've had a Mesa Urbino for some time now.
Spent about 4 hours at the range a couple days ago, and settled on the Urbino. Good size, good grip, very comfortable, points the best, and as a bonus, looks better than either of the other two.
EDIT - here's how it sits right now.

Here is my latest defensive shotgun. I wanted a pistol grip gun and didn't want to convert any of my other shotguns, so I picked this up at lunch today. Model 24403. A few hours later she is finished. Wilson +2, Wilson oversized safety, Mesa 6-round side saddle, Mesa Urbino stock, and SureFire 618LMG.
I will put some rounds through her on Sunday.

I like mine. I get tired of folks complaining about them IF they haven't shot them. 250 rds of 00 with one guy short stroking I once. It definitely has a different manual of arms for reloads but makes up for it with being compact. The weak point is the plastic rail molded into the pump action. Some have broken but Kel Tec fixes it soon enough. I imagine the next generation will remedy that.

If it's got that RJF logo on it, that thing is probably worth some stupid money now. Not to say it was cheap back then, I'm sure! I'm not a fan of the show, but I'm a fan of this!
This was before the logo and show. But has (H) stamped in front of the serial #. I'm sure it's still worth crazy money. But I will never part with it.

The store had this on the wall today and I just couldn't leave it behind (I have a soft spot for ghost rings). I have to do something about the LOP. Other than that, it is very light and handles extremely well.

Did a little work on her today (12/29) - it as raining and my hunting land was all soggy so I had some spare time. Got the bolt handle, safety, follower, mag spring, and mag tube swapped out...just waiting on the Urbino Stock and sling to arrive on Monday. I do think I will change the Mesa clamp out for a Nordic one because it is a little lighter, but the Mesa is what I had lying around. And as usual, Mike's Metal Works parts were top notch and fit perfectly.

I love the Mesa stocks and use them on all my shotguns. I originally hated the look of pistol grips so I never gave them a shot, but one day in a gun shop I shouldered one on a used 870 and was sold. The LOP and ergonomics were absolutely perfect. If you ever do any sort of patrol on with a two point sling, the shape of their pistol grip makes going from slung to shouldered extremely natural. I have tried the Speedfeed and Koxx pistol grips and have not noticed the same...I think the flat-ish back and high cut on the back side aid in this. As far as the limbsaver, it is a good pad, but I wouldn't say it is light years ahead of the other pads. I feel no difference when shooting, however compared to the Remongton R3 pad, shooting 100+ full power slugs will not leave me bruised or sore the next day. (I never shot the gun with the original stock - that thing had a LOP that would be too long for the jolly green giant. For reference, I am 6' with normal proportions, not little dwarf arms.)
The mag extension pictured is Tac-Star, but that would only fit 6-shells, so i changed to Dave's Metal Works. Dave's fits a full 7-shells (2-3/4") and still leaves ~1/2" of movement in the tube. The finish of his also matches the gun much better. I have one of his 1-piece tubes that I will put on once I get the balls to take heat to the receiver. FWIW, I also use his large bolt handles and like them better than Nordic.

Nice, Very Nice. I will be adding the ext. to my SNT. Not so sure on the C-stock- How is it with recoil?
The C Stock is no worse than the standard stock. That said, prepare for pain whwn shooting 3.5 shells.

I just purchased a Mossberg 930 Semi Auto 12 ga I with a muzzle brake, I couldn’t pass it up for the price and I was told the 930 will use a lot of the same aftermarket parts that the 500 uses, so it should be easy to customize. I would like to add a tube extension, pistol grip stock, ghost rings and Picatinny rail.

Nice 870. I just purchased one myself as would like to see a side shot of the +1 extension if possible. Does it extend past the end of the barrel at all? And how did you go about removing the dimples?
Thanks for any help on these matters.

Yes, the extension sticks past the end of the barrel by about 3/8" or so. I'd rather it not, but it is what it is. It doesn't look that bad I don't think. I haven't taken care of the dimples yet, but I think I'll try the method where you take a 16 or 17mm socket and run it through the extension, forcing the dimples out.

Pre production Magpul M93A (named MSS at the time) on an ACE A2 grip/stock adapter (I trimmed the lock as I like to run this at 12"LOP or so),
20" barrel with Vang style elongated forcing cone built by Jon Tank,
Custom top rail (there were no ready made kits at the time),
Aimpoint M2 in an ARMS 22M68 mount,
SGT tritium rear, XS tritium Big Dot front,
Surefire M69 picatinny forend, M900A light, with an unbelievable 900lumen Lumens Factory Led head conversion (and my 500lumen X300 Ultra riding in the lefty-tumbbreak position when not in use on a handgun),
Mesa Tactical Shell holders, 6 left, 4 right,
Jon Tank +3 mag tube extension.
Here's the Winchester I'm working on at the moment. I still have to do a few things like: install the tritium front bead, and bronze mid bead, put the fore end on, and figure out which flashlight to get.

Choate top folding stock
Choate 8 round extension tube
Hogue overmolded fore end
Oversized tritium front bead with bronze mid bead

Lord have Mercy!!!
These Saiga's are HOT! I've never shot one but I have handled a couple of stock models off the shelf and thought they would be a lot of fun. These custom versions are just unbelievable. I would love to have some trigger time with these babies.
I'm guessing these would go for $1500 or more, wouldn't they? Especially the ones with short Barrels that require the tax stamp. How well do they work with the budget Wally World BOX shotgun shells everyone likes to use?
The only thing is that I would want to hunt hogs with whatever shotgun I get. Some of these wouldn't be capable of that unless you were right up on them. So can you all tell me how accurate some of these builds are with slugs out to 75 or 100 yards or so? Or should I just forget that idea and just get a Saiga and trick it out knowing it is going to be a single use firearm for HD? Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Thanks for the awesome pics guys.

Its a konus micro red dot i got from Amazon. I didn't want a huge red dot on top but did want something that could stand up to constant punishment of full power 00 and slugs. I love the sight and it holds zero just fine. I highly recommend this sight.

My mossberg is currently under construction. i got an 8-shot persuader last year. first stage was to take the pistol grip off and replace with a shockwave raptor birdshead and remove the heat shield. second stage is a tac-star 6 shell sidesaddle and a fixed factory buttstock.
my plans in the near future include stippling the grips and adding a set of 590 ghost ring sights. will also add an elzetta light mount and, at the moment, im thinking a Fenix LD-20 light in the mount - gotta be a AA powered light.
anyway, here are some pics of the progress.

Stippled the grip on the stock yesterday. will be trying something on the forend soon, just gotta get through finals week first though :(
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd68/Broylz/1367442822_zps11639d11.jpg
today, i put an elastic butt cuff on it with 5 rifled slugs and replaced the two slugs in the sidesaddle with 00 buckshot. also put a basic nylon 1.25" sling on it and ordered an Elzetta ZSM light mount to put a fenix ld-10 light in for now. im hoping the LD-10 will hold up until i can get another light rated for the recoil, but researching AA battery powered options. Will add another pic when the light is on.
Last piece of this build will be a set of Mossberg ghost ring sights from the 590a1 series, maybe a set of SPX sights depending on the price difference. Ordering these direct from Mossberg and installing them myself.

Thanks,
I'm almost positive its a Mako, I liked it because it has 2 picatinny rails on each side and 1 on the bottom for a flashlight holder ect...

11-87 has a sidesaddle and 10 rd DMW tube, and a DMW Easyloader and a Nordic clamp in the box waiting to be fitted.
500 has an aftermarket railed forend, sidesaddle and 5 round elastic buttstock shellholder. It had a pistol grip when I got it and I scrounged up some nice wood furniture, but I haven't gotten around to putting the wood forend on because I kind of like the mismatched look.

If you need a red dot or Eotech for your HD shotty your in over your head
And if you call your shotgun a "shotty", you are definitely in over your head.:wavey:

I've owned a shotgun since my dad gave me a Winchester Model 37A for my first Christmas. This Remington 870 was the first shotgun that I bought myself.
I added the Allen shell holder and Quake Industries "The Claw" sling. It was slim pickings at Bass Pro Shop when I went shopping.

got the sling mounted along with a light mount from Elzetta. i also mounted an elastic butt cuff and filled it with slugs and the side saddle is now full of 00 buck along with the magazine. definitely need to get a longer sling as this one is maxed out already.

Was looking for a 870P with the Wilson/XS combo at my local dealer. Didn't have any in stock but pulled this 24899 (polished blue 870P) out of the back. Just too nice to leave there, maybe I'll have ghost rings installed on my parked 870P when I get it back from Remington. This one is perfect just the way it is.

I went to the range on Saturday and shot it with my dad. we were there mostly to work out some issues with his makarov and i forgot my box of target shells so we put a total of only 14 rounds of remington express 00 buckshot through it.
light mount held up great. i actually put it on too tight and had issues getting the magazine to cycle rounds. backed it off a 1/4 turn on a couple screws and it runs great.
i will need to get a better dedicated weapons light for it soon. the fenix will do in a pinch. i turned the light on when my dad fired off a mag full of rounds and i didnt check it between rounds but when he finished, it was strobing so the recooil was stout enough to cycle the modes at least once.
will be worth the $40 if it ever saves the life of a family member or myself. i just wont shoot it when turned on too much and make sure to check it out after the range trips.
anyone have any ideas on a AA powered light that can take this kind of abuse?

I think you are going to be hard pressed to find a AA light that is stout enough to take that kind of punishment. I think the minimum standard would be one of the Streamlight TLR's, they're cheap and they work (and available in AA). For personally when talking about the safety of my family, the lights on my guns are Surefire. Yes they are expensive but I amortize that expense by the extremely long time I have the lights. I've had several streamlight/insights products come and go but I bet I have every surefire light I've ever bought less one or two that were sold / traded to fund an upgrade. Buy a great light and you can move it around from gun to gun or as your needs change.

That is the same light I keep on my glock 17 now. I am saving up for a couple more, 1 for the shotgun and 1 for the ar15. Just keep looking for other options as well. I'm probably limiting myself on the batteries but I stock more of them and they are the cheaper option as well. WL1 is a great light btw.
