Does stuff like this made-up but completely Glocktalk-like drive anyone else nuts?

Poster A:
You know, the estimated wheat harvest in the Ukraine went up more than a million tons for the 2005/6 season, compared to the year before.

Poster B:
Oh what crap. Like you’d know. I call BS on this whole thing. What proof do you even have that they can manage to harvest ANY wheat in the Ukraine? Are YOU a Ukrainian wheat official? Ever BEEN to the Ukraine? What, did some illegal immigrant Ukranian cab driver tell you that. Keep your wild speculations to yourself. :steamed::rofl:

Poster A:
http://www.fas.usda.gov/pecad/highlights/2005/08/Ukraine_12aug05/index.htm “The USDA August estimate for 2005/06 Ukraine wheat production is 18.6 million tons against 17.5 million last year." Etc etc etc.

Poster B:

Has anyone ever admitted here that someone else was right and they were wrong?

Has any political/social/economic point of view ever changed? Ever even been slightly modified?

I have asserted a position that I was not able to get the facts to defend and later had to PM a couple of posters on another forum to retract my assertion. I have not had a position changed as a result of an internet debate/discussion nor do I ever expect to see it happen, either to myself or to someone I am debating. It is just not human nature to change a strongly held opinion/position.

1. I been wrong about all sorts of things like the current economic meltdown. I thought we were out of it two or three weeks ago.

2. I've also changed my mind about a number of things.

I've seen many people change their mind on here, but more often, I see people benefit from a good discussion.

Most often, though, are people who trash otherwise productive threads with just the type of approach you put above (and well said, I might add). The sins of a few....

My favorite diversion is, "Oh yeah, well if you don't buy this idea 100% then you are clearly not a gun lover/2nd amendment supporter/ republican/ college graduate/ NRA member. I've so outed you, you pile of slime." That stuff just gets me giggling.

Hey fingerprints are only 85% accurate too. Kind of scary when you think about how many guys are doing time based on this evidence or a bad ID.

Not true. Source please. If it were that certain, every case based on prints would have been thrown out for failing to meet the standard of beyond a reasonable doubt.

I am wrong about the 85%, I read it in a novel and assumed that it was true. I googled several good sites and while nobody puts the same number on it I would guess it to be much higher.

That is very stand up of you.:thumbsup:

I didn't doubt you because there are ID systems out there that are less than perfect. That is why when it comes to a criminal case, a physical examination is the only true standard.

Last week, and I have seen other people do it... no big deal, were still friends.

I made a mistake once --

I admitted I was wrong about something - turns out that I was actually right -

So the mistake I made was admitting I made a mistake when I was really right all along.

I will never make that mistake again. :tongueout:

------------------

The only way a person can possibly - make no mistakes - is if they never do anything. Heck I don't even claim to learn from my screw ups - its more fun to repeat them.

1) No. Arguing while researching and listening has many educational benefits. Personally I think that people as a whole have lost the art of debate and communication.

2) Yes. Including myself.

3) Yes. Look up the posting history of unions on GT. Somehow I became the union guy. I chalk it up to being able to lead one hell of a debate. It seems I personally lead the charge to give union members a voice here. Now people are not afraid to state they are in a union. Every so often I get personal messages about pro or anti-union stuff from random GTers. :dunno:

My personal bug-a-boos regarding internet debate are;

Folks who refuse to answer a question or answer by simply repeating the same drivle that spawned the question in the first place.

Folks who demand source material from others but refuse to provide their own source material to bolster their position.

Folks who confuse opinion with fact and paint (figurativly) with a broad brush.

Finally, folks who use "folks" all the time.

Also add on when the spelling police come pounding on you're thread.

Even better the guys like me who get all steamed with people who STILL don't get it when it comes to the basics like:

you're = you are
your = your car, your thread

Plus the common ones, like total & random misuse of these three words:

They're = they are
Their = their car, their thread
There = over there

Or other really strange things, like saying "would of" instead of "would have", "I drug the box across the floor" instead of "I dragged the box...". Drug? What planet did that come from?

Yes, I know... noticing things like this is a terrible crime. It makes me a mean-spirited elitist who might even be a closet Democrat or at least an anti-social loser with questionable masculinity who eats quiche and can't handle the recoil of a .45.

But in all seriousness, it's been an eye-opener (for me) to see common words and everyday phrases that I had always thought were pretty much understood, instead getting swapped around or misused.

I guess that kind of stuff just doesn't matter to people these days.

Seeing these things, and almost never commenting on them, isn't fun. It doesn't make me feel smug or smart or better than my fellow GTer. My ego isn't the issue. I'm not proud of seeing mistakes. I don't enjoy it. It doesn't provide a "gotcha" moment or a feeling of superiority.

I dislike it because it drags down the thread. It degrades the impact of a person's argument because failing on such basic elements tends to erode from the credibility of people who make the arguments, right or wrong. Sometimes it becomes genuinely difficult to understand what someone is trying to say.
