View Full Version : Gore urges civil disobedience to stop coal plants

By Michelle Nichols
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Nobel Peace Prize winner and environmental crusader Al Gore urged young people on Wednesday to engage in civil disobedience to stop the construction of coal plants without the ability to store carbon.
The former U.S. vice president, whose climate change documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" won an Academy Award, told a philanthropic meeting in New York City that "the world has lost ground to the climate crisis."
"If you're a young person looking at the future of this planet and looking at what is being done right now, and not done, I believe we have reached the stage where it is time for civil disobedience to prevent the construction of new coal plants that do not have carbon capture and sequestration," Gore told the Clinton Global Initiative gathering to loud applause.
"I believe for a carbon company to spend money convincing the stock-buying public that the risk from the global climate crisis is not that great represents a form of stock fraud because they are misrepresenting a material fact," he said. "I hope these state attorney generals around the country will take some action on that."
The government says about 28 coal plants are under construction in the United States. Another 20 projects have permits or are near the start of construction.
Scientists say carbon gases from burning fossil fuel for power and transport are a key factor in global warming.
Carbon capture and storage could give coal power an extended lease on life by keeping power plants' greenhouse gas emissions out of the atmosphere and easing climate change.
But no commercial-scale project exists anywhere to demonstrate the technology, partly because it is expected to increase up-front capital costs by an additional 50 percent.
So-called geo-sequestration of carbon sees carbon dioxide liquefied and pumped into underground rock layers for long term storage.

So then Mr. Gore needs to promote Nuclear power. But no, energy comes from fairy dust and lolipops! LOL

They need to put a wind farm in front of him. The hot air blowing from him would power the entire universe.

Civil disobedience?
Wahoo!!! Let's burn it down, boys!!! Yeehaw!!!
That's the way to promote the ecological health.
Leaving aside the fact that I think civil disobedience over this is ridiculous - Gore makes a fundamental error here. That error is assuming that the young people he is talking to are going to bother to figure out whether or not new coal plants have 'carbon capture and sequestration'.
Some of them might, but many of them will likely take this as 'coal ... bad!'

Yeah, like he invented "Man made Global Warming."
Yeah, like he invented "Man made Global Warming."
Not to mention that he also invented "carbon credits". I wonder how much money he's made selling those non-existent credits?

I was just thinking the same about that area. I own some acreage in eastern KY, and it just so happens there's a coal fired power plant there, just outside of Louisa. Being that most of the area is either employed by that plant, or the coal mines in the region, I'd guess a bunch of college aged liberal hippie idiots would not be welcomed with open arms.
Matter of fact, I'd bet they'd get an ass whipping, and the guns wouldn't even need to come out. Those country folk are a lot harder people than some morons from college.

Gore has a new 100-foot houseboat.
But it's OK -- he put a couple of square meters of solar panels on the top of the wheelhouse. And on a really nice sunny summer day, that's almost enough to power his electric razor....

Remember what they did to the timber industry in the Pacific Northwest?
Gore is giving his blessing to start an ecological terrorist war.

I can just picture fields and forests filled with hippie dirtbags searching high and low (admittedly mostly high  ) for the dreaded "coal plant" so they can civilly uproot it, and torch it at the next "Burning Man" festival.

It's a lot harder to get into a coal mine and damage it without killing yourself in the process, than it is to plant trees with spikes to injure/kill loggers.
And again, I stand by my statement above...coal miners are a hard lot, and a lot of folks will end up bleeding profusely should they try and mess with a miner's livelihood. College kids and enviro-nutjobs are no match...for the dark side...I mean, for the folks who scrape out a living in the Appalachia foothills. Hank Williams Jr. even has a song about them (Country Boy can Survive)
"Global Warming" is a SCAM. And Al Gore is a CON MAN.
I don't doubt that the Earth is warming up.
What I find hard to swallow is that man's activities have a significant effect on it one way or another.

According to The 2009 Old Farmer's Almanac, some scientists believe that an extreme cooling episode, potentially a mini-ice age, is imminent. (http://www.almanac.com/timeline/index.php) Others think that it may already be under way.

Would Civil Disobedience include damaging a large jet that flies around a single individual?

Leave the jet alone. Damage the SOB that uses it.

I recall Greenpeace (I think) climbed a Green Brier (IIRC) coal plant stack. The coal plant (had) to close down for fear of injury to the protesters. They stayed up 3+ days and put some large graffiti (I forget what) on the stack before they came down.
Thing is they WON in court that their actions were to PROTECT the earth..... NOT GUILTY (and judge berated power plant for amount of damages they claimed. "lI don't see how them climbing/some paint/signs could cause that $$$ damage" GUess he didn't understand when plant is closed down they have to BUY juice from other sources (peaking plants) at a MUCH higher cost.
IMO its TERRORISM and should be treated as such.

It "tics" me off that France has 75% of their power produced by nuclear energy while we have 75% produced by coal.
At least we have now discovered fire...

This is the second year in a row that I have noticed that summer was a little less miserable.
We were fogged and rained in for all of June and most of July with the temperatures staying in the 50s.
I had to put a fan forced heater inside my smokehouse just so my salmon could dry.
And I just returned from a moose hunt where snow has started early.

Why do I suddenly feel the urge to burn something?
I wonder what Al would think of THIS (http://www.5at.co.uk/)
As to the protesters -- how many BTUs would the power company get if one or two of them accidentally fell into the boiler.

Coal provides about half of all electricity used in the US. Suppose we were to just flip the switch and shut them down. What would we do to replace all that power? Even if you had an unlimited budget, how many years would it take to replace their output? Five? Ten? More?

I agree. Before Al Gore spouts off about stopping coal plants from producing power, he should be required to say what he plans to replace them with.
I favor putting hippies on treadmills and having them provide our power needs. Thay way, they'll do something useful.

Wonder is this makes him subject to prosecution under the RICO?

While I respect what Mr. Gore did in his youth (Vietnam) I think its about time we put him out to pasture like we did with Carter.
Also can we take his massive house off the powergrid first?
