View Full Version : The Devil Booze....
As many of you know, I have Irish roots. And as I just learned a few moments ago...for the millionth time... a few Irish Car Bombs and the world begins to look pretty good again. I found the car bomb with a few of my Irish mates, who were kind enough to tell me that weak beer wasn't everything, and that the best way to garnish a guinness was with Baileys and Jameson. I was 22. And it's been love ever since.
As a matter of information...what's you favorite drink and how did you find it? I'd love to get to know the Mayhem boys a bit better. No better way.

I really like a good scotch. I've never been able to handle sugar too much, so alcoholism isn't much of a threat. I get sick LONG before I could ever get drunk. So I'm lucky that I can drink pretty freely but not have it consume me. And for that, whiskey and scotch is the main drink. Lower calorie, and all the bang for the buck. But a good bottle will last me a few months if not longer. I like wine, too.
Never had a boilermaker. Do you mind telling me what's in it? Is the non-drinking due more to the Mormon wife or to a substantive change of heart?

I've only been really ****ed up twice in my life. I blame it on "rum and coke" and Long Island Iced Tea. To this day, I cannot drink rum or regular Coke to save my life.

I only like drinking a couple of beers, Shiner Bock and some ciders. If Im somewhere a bit nicer and a mixed drink is called for, LIT only.
Beer and Jack Daniels are my two favorites. Depends on what kind of a mood I am on which one I grab. What I can say is that I get ****ed up way faster on beer than on whiskey.

I'd like to start getting back to the harder liquors again. My gut just doesn't handle it well. The other weekend at the bar I was alternating between beer and this Bacardi Limon drink that tasted like Tropical Punch KoolAid. That was one of those nights where you hold onto the floor for dear life.

A boilermaker is just your average blue collar guy's Irish car bomb - shot of whiskey with a beer. Some guys down the whiskey and chase it with the beer, some pour the whiskey in the beer, some drop the whole shot glass in.
Really doesn't matter what - even seen it done with vodka - just a quick/cheap way to get drunk.
I stopped long before I got married, I wasn't a happy drunk and it wreaked havoc on my migraines.
PeterJasonMN 09-24-2008, 17:51 When I worked at one bar I made *****in kamikazes, but to this day if you asked me how I made them, I couldn't tell you. I made so many that it just became second nature what to grab. For Lemon Kami's I had to be careful, because unless I wanted to sit there and squeeze a whole ****ing lemon into the shaker, I'd cheat and use Mikes/Doc Otis for the flavor.
All that carbonation would make the shaker top fly off reeeeeeeeeeal fast if you weren't careful

Like others have said, it depends on my mood.
I like beer at any time. Imports and Microbrews mostly. Hoegaarden is my favorite. I like a good black and tan. Most Sam Adams I love. Found it by trying different beers.
I drink Scotch, bourbon, and brandy on the rocks when I want to relax with a good drink. Just wanted to try something new one night.
Wine is amazing. Sauvignon blanc is my favorite. Actually... found this at a Jean Luc Ponty show with a former teacher and her husband (they brought it)
Not really into mixed drinks... but I'll drink them if the setting and theme calls for it.
When I've had a bad day... week... or month.... I get a gallon container, a faith of Grey Goose and a 1/2 gallon of iced tea and go to town.
GIN I WILL NOT TOUCH!
I will throw back some Patron on occasion.
Oh. Since my Kerouac days I've loved Tequila. We used to take the trips down to mexico...spear fishing, campfires, peppers in the food and tequila in the glasses. Great memories.

My German genes concur as well sir. Ever had it half and half with a Guinness? If not, try it. Heavenly! I pretty much like all unfiltered wheat style beers... the citrus aroma and flavor is something special.
MacG... if you like Hoegaarden... you must give Delirium Tremens a try!

It is a wonderfully flavored beer.

PeterJasonMN 09-24-2008, 18:25 The MOST ****ed up I've ever been was off screwdrivers.
We started with the standard 12oz glasses, probably two shots of rail vodka, and the rest oj. As the tips started getting bigger it became more and better vodka. When we went to the 2nd bar, it was the "sister" bar to the one I worked for. So I got my drinks in one of those big tap glasses. Well needless to say, when you've probably already put away almost a bottle of vodka, then the bartender starts making them 50/50 to 60-40, you're not goin to be in for a good night.
At one point they found me in the bathroom, on the floor, hugging the toilet. I look up, see my buddy Rich, and he's got 4 strippers around him all checking on me. I look at him and go "Rich, why are you in my heaven?"
Sam Adams, and everything else can go straight to hell.
Not a liquor fan, and I will categorically refuse wine. I pledged at the first college I went to; we drank LOTS of street wine. Wild Irish Rose, Night Train and Thunderbird (gasoline) will make you the fun, living-under-a-bridge kind of drunk absolutely nobody wants you to be. On an unrelated note, I had a dwarf pledge brother named Tavish McMullen. Swear to Christ.

I only drink Sam Jackson Ale:

The only sam adams Ive ever tried was a winter seasonal brew a couple of years ago, and I have to say it was pure ****e. I did not enjoy it. I apparently need to try some different sam adams brew. Im hearing good things about it.
I like shiner and boddingtons and bluemoon, which sam adams do you guys think I should try?
PeterJasonMN 09-24-2008, 18:34 The Oktoberfest Sam Adams isn't bad.
TAP Sam Adams is good. BOTTLE Sam Adams tastes like ****.

Nothing wrong with Shiner and 1554 and Blue Moon and and and... Sam's just the best.
I disliked the winter brew myself. I think the original Boston Lager is the best, followed by Oktoberfest. I had an "expired" Spring season once and it was good.
Go for original Boston Lager, though.

Weird. I go to bars about never, and the one time I had Sam Adams from tap it tasted like curdled goat feces (I'm approximating without a thesaurus on hand).
Always had good luck with the bottles.
Ill try it next. Are all sam adams darkish?
Nope, they've got a full line. I haven't tried a quarter of them. I will some day, but I just love the original.
I like bourbon, scotch, and irish whiskey. Can't stand vodka. I hate tequila, unless it's in a margarita. Love gin and tonics.
I pretty much like all beer. Thick, thin, pale,or extra dark, I love it and believe they all have their place. It would seem to be difficult to funnel Aventinus Wheat Doppelbock, and I couldn't see myself savoring miller lite with a good book.
PeterJasonMN 09-24-2008, 19:42 This sucks. My neighborhood is a "Dry" neighborhood, due to a city ordinance from when they annexed this part of town 100 years ago. I'm SO used to just being able to walk to a liquor store, not this get in the car and drive five miles for booze ****.

Vodka cranberry is an absolute classic, and will get you through in any situation from a sporting event to a dinner party.

One of the reasons I love deer camp each year is that one of my buddies brings a nice supply of 'shine with him. We sit around the fire sipping and telling stories. You get wicked smashed, pass out, but amazingly are hang-over free from the stuff. Then again, you are probably still drunk when you wake up the next morning, but does it really matter?
Crit's Drinking Thesis Paper:
Nine times out of ten, I'm the sober guy. One group buddies pretty much never drink. Done deal.
My other big group of buddies only gets together once or twice a year (this is my Dragon*Con group), and for many of them it's their one weekend away from their kids; so they're hammered for pretty much the whole time. I stay sober and ride herd, mostly.
There's a group of twenty to thirty of us in Atlanta (where none of us are from), wandering around the city all times of the day and night in ****ing spandex, capes, and similar nonsense. I don't want any of them -- especially my wife or any of the other gals -- to get too drunk, or wander off alone.
Now, when I do decide to drink a little, most of the time it's with Group B, at dinner or something. I'll just pick one of my buddies at random, and say "Hey, pick me something." A few of them are quite the beer connoisseur (I am not), and will pick me out a fancy beer then scowl at me when I gulp it down uncaringly. I think my annual drink at dinner this year was a "rum runner." I picked it from the list that one of the girls rattled off, because "rum runner" reminded me of gun running, which reminded me of smugglers, which reminded me of Han Solo from Star Wars. Yes, that was my logic chain before the drink.
In short, when out at dinner and feeling like a drink with the meal to be social, I pick something more or less completely at random. If no one volunteers anything, I go for a Guiness (I got a taste for 'em during a backpacking trip I took all over Ireland).
When I'm drinking to be drunk, I go straight for either Jameson's or Bushmill's if available, and will settle for Beam or Jack Daniels or whatever's handy, if not. No Coke, no ice, no water, none of that nonsense. If the good sweet Lord had intended for the stuff to have extra water in it, he'd have bottled it that way. I just need a bottle and a glass. Glass optional.
When this happens, I'll drink, and drink, and drink, and not feel a thing right up until I pass out. I don't get loud, I don't get mean, my face doesn't flush, I don't feel extra relaxed or pent up, I don't slur my words, nothing. I feel and act fine one minute, then I fall unconscious. So I don't do this very often.
In fact, that's a big part of why I don't drink very often. After a big stupid break up, I did drink "a lot." Bushmill's, alone in my apartment, almost every day after work sort of "a lot."
Then I went to a party with a bunch of gals from work. I was the only guy. We played drinking games (me with a fifth of Bushmill's that I drank solo, then moved on to red wine and had about half a bottle, them all giggling over wine coolers)...I remember very clearly playing "Presidents and *******s," and that's really about it. Then I woke up the next morning on my manager's couch, in my boxers. I'd vomited black **** all over the place, didn't remember doing so, didn't remember one of them -- to this day none of those four girls from work will tell me -- fellating me about thirty minutes before the puking started, don't remember which of them stripped me and helped me shower, don't remember which of them got me back into my clean boxers, or anything else that may or may not have happened.
I feel ripped off by not knowing, and so vowed to not drink that heavily very often, if ever, again.
CANNOT stomach vodka. Cannot stand the smell (and yes, it DOES have a particular smell).
Friend almost died at a party on seemingly (at the time, for him) innocent Screwdrivers.
If and when I drink, I'll make apple margaritas (I make KILLER margaritas, and only about once a year unless I make them for someone else's party on request), or I'll drink pumpkin ale. My current favorite pumpkin ale is by Buffalo Bill's Brewery (http://www.buffalobillsbrewery.com/beers_bottled.asp). Their Orange Blossom isn't bad either, bought a six of that on a whim this year.
OCCASIONALLY I'll drink coffee with kahlua in it. Winter's coming.
cjlandry 09-26-2008, 11:44 I just picked up a bottle of Bowmore Islay 12 year. It was the best that they had at the grocery store. I'm about to pour meself a glass right now.
Otherwise, I've been sippin' on Bushmills for the past couple of weeks. Before that, it was Glenfiddich 18 that I got in the duty free shop in London.
Scotch is my favorite, but I try to keep it low budget.
I decided to try Laphroaig 10 year a few nights ago, while the sales guys were visiting from Houston. I like a peaty scotch, but that **** was severely peaty! After the first sip I couldn't smell or taste anything else. You could smell it from across the bar when the bartender opened the bottle. I can't say I didn't enjoy it, but it's one of those experiences that you only need once.

I love Bushmills. A decent cheap alternative is kilbeggan.
cjlandry 09-26-2008, 11:55 I love Bushmills. A decent cheap alternative is kilbeggan.
I've never seen Kilbeggan. The only Irish Whiskeys I've had have been Jameson, Tullamore Dew, and Bushmills. I like 'em all, and the price is reasonable.
I enjoy Jim Beam Black from time to time, but that's about the only bourbon that I really like.
I got a bottle of Jim Beam Rye a while back. Another of those which I enjoyed, but the one experience was enough for me.
osiruscyn 09-26-2008, 12:10 My Supreme choice of booze is either a case of Coors or a fifth of Gentelman Jack. I'm talking a night.

Phenol is an industrial chemical, not a flavoring agent. It does not belong in whiskey.

cjlandry 09-26-2008, 15:07 "Scotch" has so many different flavors that I can find one that tastes like ****e, another that tastes fantastic, and infinite shades in between.
I reckon any whisky from Scotland is scotch, and I think there are more shades of scotch than there are of most other whiskeys.
Some of it tastes like vomit (such as J&B), while other variants are very pleasant.
I've certainly never known a woman to enjoy scotch whisky, but I know plenty of them who like Canadian blended whiskey, almost as much as they like daiquiris.

Yeah...more or less. Whiskey is cooked in a closed kettle, while scotch is cooked in an open kettle and flavored by the smoke, peat, etc. And that's why there are a billion different flavors.

Throw in Blended vs Single Malt, differences in aging barrels, and region, and you have plenty of room to find your own personal favorite.
Most of what I prefer are Highlands single malts.
by the way, if you ever want a Bourbon that will kick your ass, there is this stuff called McKendricks.... aged in mesquite. It isn't clear, and it isn't smooth. At all.
