My 15 Yr. old son has very oily hair and normal shampoos don't get it clean. When I was his age I had the same problem but I was able to find several shampoos for oily hair. Today I couldn't find anything for him, it was all Extra Body or Extra Shine junk. I guess it is not PC for a teenager to have oily hair any more.
Do you have any sugestions on a good shampoo for him?
Thanks John

Pert Plus for oily hair.
It's got a bit of conditioner in it and it smells really good.

T-Gel any of the brands will work. Cheaper is better. Walgreens brand is about half what neutrogena is.
i've had oily/fine hair my entire life. i usually switch up between the various shampoo/conditioner combos since they have little conditioner it won't grease your hair up as fast. also, i used to use clarifying shampoo when i was younger, that stuff will dry it up in a hurry. also, i remember mom making me use dawn dish soap every so often, and it really helped too.
also, if he really wants to curtail the oil hair, just tell him to keep it cut short and that will help a ton, as well.
I use head and shoulders and it leaves my hair squeaky clean and shiny

Head and Shoulders makes a version for oily hair.

This is the stuff I use because of my exceedingly greasy German/Italian heritage. There's only 1 kind of Head and Shoulders in a dark blue bottle, so no confusion at the store. Not too pricey, around $4 or $5. The bottle has a slightly different shape than in this pic, but it's still the same color.

I have oily hair. I went through all these expensive shampoos listed above, and more. Then i picked up a bar of antiseptic (or antibiotic) soap, and rubbed it on my head. Problem solved. Cheap. It even comes on a rope!
Edit - another good idea
Buzz/shave his head. then rub the soap on it!
Just about any anti-dandruff shampoo should work. Selsun Blue, T-Gel, Head & Shoulders, etc.

Thanks John\I too have oily hair.......
For years now, I have alternated and used "Prell"......you can find it in Walmart, and it is fairly cheap. It is a green shampoo and seems to have more detergent in it......
Edited to add: lookie, some guy is selling a bottle of Vintage Prell!! I remember the glass bottles like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-PRELL-SHAMPOO-GLASS-BOTTLE-UNUSED-7-OZ_W0QQitemZ130257186670QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item130257186670&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Now Prell looks like this in the stores: http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=304574&id=prod9059
Drink more water.
Eat less dairy. Eat less fatty foods. Eat less oils (olive oil, canola oil, etc.)
Eat more fruits, vegetables.
Wash hair daily with a completely herbal shampoo such as Mill Creek Botanicals Oil-free Shampoo. Massage the scalp well during this wash.
Rinse the hair with a tea that contains tannic acid. Lemon and water also works. Aloe Vera and lemon also works. Any astringent is good. I don't recommend the alcohols.
Skip the conditioner unless it's oil free (such as Mill Creek's).
Every 3-4 days you want to massage and treat. Massaging your scalp can help exfoliate skin and remove all oily residue. Mix 1 tablespoon of Malt Vinegar in a glass of water, add a pinch of salt. Use 2 tablespoons of it on your scalp and massage it with your finger. Leave it on for one hour.
Most of all, avoid using those "Head and Shoulders" type shampoos. They're too strong. Your hair and scalp has no chance of finding a balance.
While I don't have particularly oily hair, I (and others who have had problems with oily hair) have reduced the amount of oil in the hair by... forgoing shampoo. It sounds nasty, but quite frankly it's better for many folks and no one will think it's nasty so long as it's being give a good water scrub/rinse. If the scalp isn't constantly trying to compensate for the effects of shampooing, it is possible that it might balance its oil production.
Years ago I switched from all the commercial/chemical crap to J.R. Liggett bar shampoo. All natural & great stuff.

Same here. I have such oily baby hair that if I miss a shower it looks like it will slide off my head. That's pretty much the reason I wear a flatop/buzzcut to this day........Low maintenance.
But the Dawn dishsoap thing works well.

http://www.jrliggett.com/checked that site and that Jojoba and Peppermint bar shampoo looks good, I may order me some. I like the way my scalp tingles with peppermint!!!
How long does one of those bars last?? I see they are $6.99 each.
Wonder if I can get the stuff off E-bay??? Will go see.
How long does one of those bars last??
The bar shampoo is for really short hair and lasts me a month. Repeat: it is not for long hair.
I have fairly oily hair and Pantene Daily Cleansing is pretty good.
Avoid shampoo with conditioners, they only compound the problem.

+1 for dishwashing liquid. Cheap and man does it cut the grease!
I had the same problem. Head and Shoulders works well and so does Neutrogena products. I found that a wash and repeat solved the problem. Only one wash often won't get the hair clean. Does he wash his hair in the evening or morning ?

use a "backup" shampoo once a week and it will wash out all the buildup from your normal brand. I used H&S and use TGel once or twice a week. Ever since I started doing that, my hair has never been better
