Sub-Saharan African history. It's an area that is never really discussed in school, but has such a rich, colorful, brutal history that fascinates me.

I drove Tamiya monster trucks when I was a kid. I was a fanatic about fixing them, keeping them clean, etc.
Now I just buy used parts and put them together well enough to run. I drive them broken, with mismatched parts, broken body shells, etc... I'll fix them right some day.

For some reason I didn't seem to break my Traxxas that much but I wrecked my Blackfoot all the time. Once I was driving it full speed and the radio wigged out- I stuck it under a Chevette. You could here the crunch for three blocks and it took forever to get it out from under that car. That was an expensive afternoon.

My wife wants a VW Thing for our 10th Anniversery. Have you ever worked on one? I plan on a clunker, and restoring it. Any advise? I have been looking on ebay and plan to buy something in the next few months.

Funny you should say that. I had a Blackfoot as a kid. We had some annoying neighbors, their dog slept in the garage. My bedroom was downstairs, I used to strap a flashlight to the top of the BF and drive it over to their house. I'd gun it and slam it into the garage door, then park it to the side of the house. The dog would raise cain, one of the Greens would inevitably walk out to the front porch, ask if anyone was around, and go back to bed. I'd do this a couple of times a night on random nights. It was a lot of fun, but then one night on the 'last run' I was driving the BF back to my house when it hit something and spun around with the flashlight facing Mrs. Green on the old front porch. She called me out, and it's rather embarrassing to crawl out of your window at one AM to get fussed at by Mrs. Green. Had to apologize and slink across the yard to get my truck, ya know. :whistling:

Primitive skills. Flint knapping, tracking, hide tanning, that kind of stuff.
I know how to flint knap.
I 'decipher' and recreate old weaving/braiding techniques. I've learned how to read some Japanese from my collection of Kumihimo books. I can actually do most of the weaving/braiding techniques on this page (http://www.weavershand.com/). I'm an anthropology major, what can I say?
Side-illness associated with the braiding/weaving is that I'm a color-junkie. I tend to collect fiber (from thread to embroidery floss to silks specifically for weaving) and beads (100+ year old micro seed beads get me into trouble often).
Old insulators. HH
I have a shelf of old insulators. I think I'm up to about 20 or 30, plus sections of old electric cross beams to display them on. I'm still not sure how that started.
All my body piercings are self-done. Does that count?

My best friend is buried in a small church cemetery out in the middle of Timbuktu. His grave is about ten feet from where the woods start. I go down and put balloons on his grave the night before his birthday. Imagine somebody jumping a fence into a graveyard holding a gun, flashlight and a balloon boquet at midnight. One time I could hear something moving around in the woods. All I could think of was rabid raccoon or bear getting ready to bite me.

i was never worried about living creatures, im worried about the ones that bullets cant hurt. i have had this hobby for 14 years, and i have actually traveled the country just to go to the "real" places, but nothing can compare to a burial ground i found in the arizona desert. i could not set foot i the joint, and i tried multiple times. st. louis is full of places to visit thank god, but wont even think about the mounds just outside of my town. its the largest adrenaline rush i have ever had going to honest documented haunted places.

I like to fart in elevators. But that is more of an interest than a hobby. I don't really have the money to go to new york city where the really tall elevators are. But if I won the powerball...
Sadly, GT is my "strange" hobby. I like to buy and work on firearms (to a mild extent as compared to folks here). I also typically maintain a POS 80's turbo 4 cylinder of sort. I've gotten rid of my last two Conquest TSi projects and currently have a 1987 Dodge Raider 4x4 (which may get a 400 hp Conquest TSi motor). I'm also a gadget geek and gear queer at work.

I am getting into all that stuff, too. Currently I am hugely into food prep "old world" style. I salt and hang my own hams, hang salami, saucisson sec, bresoala (air dried beef), pancetta, cold smoked salmon, etc. Chefs tell me my bacon is the baste they've tasted.
I have an outdoor fireplace and I try to smoke as much as I can over a low wood fire.
I just ordered a 5 gallon oak barrel. Time for cider!

My only weird one is holsters. I will buy a holster I know won't work out, just on the off chance I'll someday buy a gun it will work with.
Some of my other collections:
Guns. Knives. Keychains and bottle openers. Military and police patches. Funky old clocks. Skeletons & skulls. Grateful Dead, Volkswagen and gun manufacturer paraphenalia. Books. Old pics. Militaria, esp. Navy (esp. Midway, Hornet and Enterprise).
Aircooled Bugs (3 to date, but no buses. Buses are getting to be a rich man's hobby).
'86 Samurais (2).
Former passions:
Honda motorcycles (4).
AMC era Jeeps(2).
'79 Camaros(2).
Antique radios. I still have a couple that need restoring bad.
Antique cameras, still & movie, esp. Kodaks.
Antique musical instruments - esp. accordians and violins.
So of course the wife brings me home lots of Nutcrackers (yeah, the wooden soldier looking guy), funky old lighters, and lighthouse related art. And cats.

No way dude. I'd love to play piano. I would if I had one, most definitely. Nothing gay at all about it.

i was never worried about living creatures, im worried about the ones that bullets cant hurt. i have had this hobby for 14 years, and i have actually traveled the country just to go to the "real" places, but nothing can compare to a burial ground i found in the arizona desert. i could not set foot i the joint, and i tried multiple times. .
Where was that at?
There are places I've gotten creeped out (have had multiple mag-lights die on the same trail, within 10 feet of eachother, on different occasions). But haven't had too much trouble in old cemetaries lately.

No. I am planning to, maybe today. Sometime this weekend for sure.
I seem to lack motivation right now

The only odd, out of character, "weird" hobby I have is Predator-related figures. Specifically, I like the Hot Toys 1/6 figures. I only have four of them since some of them look bad.
I put them on shelves around the house and guests ALWAYS stop and look at them.
Google; "Hot Toys Ancient Predator Asia Edition" if you would like to see what I consider the best of the lot. They look even better in person.
Don't start looking around some of the websites that offer this crap for sale. I keep telling myself I'm NOT going to buy a John Wayne figure....... or perhaps a 1980's-era scout figure to represent myself during my time in the service.
If you're LE, SWAT, Infantry, SF, Pilot, Navy, etc,.... check out some of the 1/6 figures. Having one on your shelf brings back memories.

Computer gaming, especiallystrategy games
Tabletop RPGs
Viking combat re-enactment and related handcrafts http://www.vikingsfinland.com/vaasa/index.html
IPSC & Reservist rifle practical shooting. (Local specialty discipline)
Actually looking at chain mail production now, i have a friend that made a hauberk and a hood. Produced his own (non-riveted) links from basic steel wire.
I don't know if these are strange or weird at all but I am big into muay thai kickboxing and I like to do yoga. I read a lot of science fiction type novels like the Dresden Files. I used to be big into the RC car thing but I haven't touched my car in years.

Everything else I do is fairly normal.

Weird hobbies.. let's see here:
1. I collect Joker Cards.
2. Baseball - I play in a D-league (think little league for adults).
3. Bowling - Not that weird, but if you knew me you'd think it's quite strange that I'm so fond of it.
4. DJ - Two turntables, records and a mixer. I hate hip-hop but I sure as heck can spin, scratch, and beat juggle the stuff and make it sound good. I cope with it by not listening to the lyrics, the stuff hip hop artists rap about :puking:. I also spin disco. :outtahere:
5. Graffiti - Before you get your panties in a bunch, no I do not deface property. God, made computer tablets for me to draw on and a good friend lent me their backyard wall to spray and buff at my leisure. As a graphic designer it's just a different form of typography to me.
6. Boxing - Did it for a bit in high-school, recently trying to regain some of the form. It's tiring and it hurts more than I remember.

Nope. I've been 'oh so close' a couple of times when I've been back that way on vacation, but it's never worked out to where I could swing by and check it out. Besides, the thought of camping/trying to sleep in 90 degree heat with 150% humidity just doesn't do anything for me! :ack:

I really don't have the land for bees where I'm at. I'm putting them on my moms land;) She don't live far from me. As far as the mead goes, I don't plan on heating anything. So I don't have to worry about letting it cool down. One thing I'm not sure about is when to bottle it. I don't want to bottle it to early and blow corks all over the place.:wow:

My rule of thumb with mead is wait about a month after you stop seeing any visable signs of fermentation. At that point it should be safe. But really when you're talking about 12 pounds of honey in five gallons...you have a lot of material for the yeast to work with.

I wouldn't know. I've always let it stop on it's own. You really want to let the yeast live out their fullest potential. Stopping it prematurely would change the out come.
Of course this is how port wine is made. Durng the fementation stage, brandy is added. This kills the yeast and a strong sweet wine is produced.
