View Full Version : Wii Hard to find
I want to buy a Wii for my son for Xmas. I figured I better start now and look.. But all the walmarts are out.. Seems the game stores are out, the best buys are out.. And they want crazy prices on Amazon and Ebay... Why the hell is this system so hard to get 2 years after its release?
I mean If I have to buy him the New Priced Xbox for 50 bucks cheaper I will.. But I want the Wii. Its crazy.. Anyone have any hints at finding this freaking thing?

I got mine on black friday at launch- but I got an inside tip from a game store owner and camped at 2AM to get it. Yea, I'm crazy.
Ask around at game stores to see what they think their stock will look like. If you look in malls or heavily-populated areas, they will likely be out.
Maybe this will help?

Dumb luck, thats how I got mine for my nephews last year, I had no idea it was even a hot commodity! If its meant to be it will be.

it's a big scam by Nintendo. They control supply making it seem as there is some huge shortage.. Ask the electronics departments at stores when they get them in and keep calling till they come in. I'm going to start looking around to buy a few so i can sell them on ebay for christmas time
I don't know now that I have been looking around a bundled price with both controllers and Numchucks and smash brothers will cost me about 400 bucks for toys r us... Starting to think that maybe the Xbox360 will be the better buy right now..

Around here they aren't easy to find, but not really that hard... just make the rounds at the video game stores, might call ahead and ask when they are coming in. I'd guess you can have one within a week or two if you really try.

Its not a big scam, Nintendo is blowing Microsoft and Sony away in sales, its about capacity or lack thereof. Btw, nothing I can't stand more than someone trying to profiteer on a toy targeted toward children. By fleecing someone on ebay, you can say, "hey, its the free market", and your right, in a sense, hell, I'm a Milton Friedman brand libertarian.
All that being said, by doing what you plan on doing, you are helping to ensure that only the kids of the well to do will get the Wii this Christmas, cause mommy and daddy won't mind paying double, where the kids of parents who aren't doing as well aren't gonna just burn an extra couple hundred just to get a video game system.
I can't work because I'm in medical school, so I'm on a fixed income (could use a few extra bucks), but I have enough money to buy a few Wii's and I know exactly when and where to find them if I wanted to and could easily flip them like you are saying, but I won't because it would mean that I would be damaging my integrity.
Bottom Line: Fleecing an adult, I don't care about, but by fleecing the parents, you are only fleecing less well to do children. Go ahead and do it if you can look at yourself in the mirror after that and actually feel good about yourself, I certainly know that I couldn't.

How old are the kids? If they are younger than 12, go for the Wii if you can get it, older than that, you are definitely better with an XBox.

I own both the Wii and 360, and the Wii hasn't been turned on in a few months. My oldest son thought it was great at first, but the gimmick wore off quickly. I enjoyed the bundled golf game, but not enough to play it more than a dozen times.
My 360 gets used nearly everyday, though not by the kids.
I picked up my Wii at Target. They were at that time getting shipments in during the week, and holding them for Sunday. I rolled in early one Sunday and scooped one up. I've still never seen one on a store shelf in my area.
Good luck in your search.
I also own a 360 and a Wii. The 360 I got near launch at a Circuit City in the Mall o' America. The Wii I got at the Best Buy right next to the corporate HQ. I got lucky on both of them really. I had been looking for the Wii for a couple months and just happened to stop by on a day they got a shipment. It was the only one in the store at the time. That being said the comments above about the gimmick wearing off quickly are true. If the kids over 12 just save the 50 bucks. My Wii has been rarely used after the first month.
Oh god I hate searching for New stuff. I build computers myself and Now that I know what causes the 3 ring of death on the Xbox and how to fix It, that thrifty side of me that has been plauging me for the last 2 years is thinking of buying a Broken Xbox 360 with the Ring of death of 40 50 bucks and fixing it and then picking up the other parts like Controllers and giving it for the Xmas present.
I feel so cheep.. But If I would of know that the 3 ring of death is a heating issue with thermal Clamps coming off and the easy fix I would of bought a broken system years ago. LOL.
Maybe I will still just bye the Wii.. My son is only 9. He has the Regular xbox and I could not stand the fact that they hardly have kid games for that system.
Oh well I will keep looking if by mid Oct I don't find one I will get him an xbox. :embarassed:

I disagree. They've had the Wii out for nearly two years- that's more than enough time to ramp up production. They've kept production just high enough to almost meet demand, but not quite. Works great for them- they likely won't drop the price like the Xbox360 and PS3 will (at least not as early) as the supposed rarity and stuff will make people still try to snap it up as soon as they see one. I used to want to get one, but only will now if they drop the price. It's not worth more than an X360. It may be different, but it's just a glorified Gamecube-and that's old technology.

Just for laughs I checked craigslist and there were quite a few on there in my area.
There's a video game store here that has them in stock all the time for $250. They had the same supply problem until earlier this year, but it's not an issue now. I was in there a couple of days ago (I'm also thinking about getting one for my kids, we've been playing Gamecube up until now, they're 8 and 10) to ask if the supply is still good as it has been for the last several months. They told me they're still getting them in every week. It's no longer an issue here. Maybe it's different in different parts of the country? :dunno:
Our local Wal-Mart has them once in a while, but their price is the same as the game store.

XBox 360 been out for three years, sold 10 million US, 20 million worldwide
Nintendo Wii been out for two years, sold 13 million, 30 million worldwide
PS3 been out for 2 years, sold 5 million, 14.5 million worldwide
So Wii has been out as long as PS3, yet has sold 2x as much, 360 has been out a year longer than Wii and has been surpassed in sales by Wii. Remember, N64 and Gamecube where not huge hits, even though Nintendo expected to do well with Wii, they didn't think they would have that much success, so they didn't plan to produce that many Wiis.

I realize they've sold many Wiis, but you'd think that they could figure out the demand and meet it over two full years if they really wanted to. I find it much more likely they've found this production point maximizes their income by minimizing inventory while supporting the initial price point. Good for them, but I'll only consider buying one once they change the price point to something closer to what is reasonable considering the costs of the more advanced consoles on the market.

There is another factor that I'm amazed no one has mentioned.
Frankly, they can't keep up with demand in the US simply because it's not a priority for them. When the value of the dollar keeps dropping, they make more money by getting them to Europe first. (http://www.dailytech.com/Weak+Dollar+Blamed+for+Poor+Wii+Availability+in+US/article11298.htm)
Protip: The wii sucks. I have had two now. Each time I walked into a store, saw it and said hmm these are supposed to be fun and they are hard to find I should buy one. Then I bought it, played it for a couple days then sold it. The first one I made a profit on. The second one I sold to my cousin for less than I paid. He now has it in the box, in his closet.
Got mine by a simple Google search for "wii". Lots of stores had them, so I ordered one.
Why stand in line or call stores every day? Just order one from Fry's, Best Buy, etc.
If you are having trouble then use http://www.wiialerts.com/?noredir This service will email or text message you when wii's are available. According to their site there are several bundles availabel right now from places like wally world and newegg.

Is there anyway to order the Wii through any of these stores websites or even special order directly with the store? I would think you would be good by Christmas if you did that. Maybe it isn't possible though.
I want to buy a new system. I just can't decide if the Wii is worth it, the XBOX360 has dropped in price, graphics are great.

What kind of games are you into? If it FPS and sports then the 360. The Wii is good for family fun type games.

Wii is a different kind of system. Not the same as X360 or PS3. Not a hardcore gamer system. Its for FAMILY FUN. A niche not served well by the other consoles. Nintendo tapped an unserved market and voila! Market leader.
A guy at work found one this year at Toys-R-Us. He called around in his area and found it.

I hear ya, despite my severe lack of time, I like gaming occasionally. I bought a 360 and PS3 for myself and a Wii for my little nephews. I enjoy them all. Your right, Wii is eons behind in technology, but the controller is what makes it. Their pricing reminds me of Glock's pricing, still cheap, could be cheaper (because production costs are low), but they would be crazy to sell them cheaper because they are selling like hot cakes as is. If Nintendo wants to compete in the next gen systems, they will take the money they have made off of the Wii and invest it in catching up to Microsoft and Sony.
I still think Nintendo would pump more Wiis out if they could, because while they are making money on their system (unlike Sony, Microsoft has a small margin of profit), the real money is in selling games, so more systems sold=more potential game sales, which is where the real money is.

Really, a 360 with controllers and accessories and a game is going to jump up just as high... especially when you add the hard drive.
I had also hoped to get a red-ring 360 and fix it, but every one I could find with one wanted almost what I'd pay for a working used one.
I'd recommend the Wii if you want any real selection of kids games. Call your local store and ask when their Wii shipments come in... then be there.
I bought one recently by going to Target when they opened on a Sunday morning they had several in stock and I actually got there about 30 min after they opened. My mom recently got one by doing the same thing at ToysRus. This was in Austin, TX.

Thanks guys for all the help.. I will just look around. I'm still wondering if I should get him the Wii or just buy an Xbox 360 for him.. I'm going to take a look at the 360 lineup and see what games they have.

Keep in mind, if you buy a 360 do not, DO NOT, buy the Arcade version. You need to at least purchase a Premium 360 package. The hard drive is damn near mandatory. The Arcade does not come with one, and they charge a RIDICULOUS mark-up to buy a hard-drive on its own.

AGREED nintendo has pulled the same tactics since their first system got hot .the do this whenever they release / and for the reason of out selling sony /ms is basic knowledge there are more old people and kids then just adult people that is why they sell so many . - nursing homes get wii, and kids love it . what is it like every family has average of 3 kids now , and hispanics and africans have about 6 per family . that is alot of wii
I decided to go for the Xbox 360 and purchased a system off Ebay with the 20 gig hardrive.. Refurbished for 174.00.
Of course I did the same thing a few years ago when I bought his original Xbox Refurbished for 125 or somthing. System still works today.
The Price of the Wii on Ebay was more then they wanted in stores which I thought was silly. So I went with the Xbox 360.
Plus I can sneak in GTA4 when he is not looking this xmas for myself.
Which has better graphics because we are getting my Girlfriends 13 year old son a Playstation this xmas too.

To buy one with the intention on flipping it and selling it (A child's toy) is a scumbag move no matter how you slice it. If you want to charge an sky high price for say, the latest iPhone, I say, more power to you, but not with a child's toy. Decreasing supply in that kind of way, helps ensure less children of the working class end up with one. Remember, children are the most innocent in society, so you'll never be able to justify fleecing someone on a product intended for children to me.
Its the idiots that buy a system in anticipation it will be in short supply in order to sell it for a profit that help further the hysteria around a certain toy. Call me crazy, but I guess I have a bug up my azz over situations like this. Its a form of speculation, trying to make the easy buck. Normally, I don't care much weather someone does this or not (although I do laugh when the idiots flipping houses, making the current housing problem worse lose their shirt), but not when it comes to childrens toys.

i have to agree. and also to the old folks that are homes , they are the second largest players of wii behind kids. a very scumbag thing to do .
I've got all three systems and imho the 360 is the best system for the price.
360 is cheaper than the Wii.
360 has a literal **** ton of awesome games out for it and usually has the better multi platform games.
Better interface and friend options.
(from my experience) Excellent CS with fast turn over on repairs.
Nintendo has ****ed over their original fan base in order to appeal to the casual crowd and I guess it's working well for them. I've lost alot of respect for them.
The PS3 is an excellent Bluray player that just happens to play games if you can find something you like in the 6 whole quality titles they've got out for it.

The XBox would be my choice if I were you. Back in college, we had a Wii, XBox, Xbox 360, PS2, and PS3.....the one that got used the most was by FAR the Xbox 360 (just has the best games overall I think). The only time we used the Wii was for playing Super Smash Brothers and then Super Smash Brothers Brawl when it came out.

Save him the frustration and don't get Sonic the Hedgehog. They really have been messing the series up for a while and this one takes the cake for crappyness.
The Halo series are M rated games so I don't know how you go about that with your kid but I grew up playing violent video games and turned out just fine.
I paid the normally listed price just before Thanksgiving of last year. I heard they were so hard to find. I called the Game Stop at my local mall and asked them how I could get one. They told me that they received their lot every Thursday morning around 10am after shipments were delivered. I took an early lunch the next Thursday and picked two of them up at 11am. No problem at all, they never had lines either but they were always sold out by the end of each Thursday.

Halo 3 is good, very well made if sci fi first person shooters are your thing (they're not my thing, but still enjoyed the game). Gears of War was my favorite game for XBox 360, but it is a violent game. GoW is like a hybrid 1st/3rd person shooter (groundbreaking control system), with great graphics. Your main weapon is a gun with a chain saw on it and when the monster/alien things get close, you can cut them in half, with the blood splattering all over the camera. I thought it was pretty cool, and there is an option in the game that allows you to turn of the brutality, but I figured you should be warned if the game is for a child. They are also coming out with GoW2 in another 5 or so weeks, I can't imagine this NOT being the best game ever made!
Both GoW and Halo series are Microsoft only games, as Microsoft makes them.

Yeah, so was Halo 2... And when I played it I could not figure out why it was rated M..
M rating on Halo is joke, but GoW deserves the M rating. As I've stated in my earlier post there is some brutality in it (realistic looking too, especially to a kid) and lots of potty language (but again, you can turn both the brutality and language off if you so desire).

I sold my xbox 360 and had a ton of games I gave away too. Reason being for me, I have a four and a half year old. with the Wii system my wife got the Wii Fit for workouts, I got a few games and have a severe Mario Kart problem now and my son can play golf, bowl, tennis most all games due to the simplicity of the game system.
It's much easier for the whole family to get into it and have fun when there are only a couple buttons and a more active involvement in the gaming, at least for us. We have a great time with everyone from grandparents to little kids. It just made more sense, besides in a couple years there will be a better system, always is.
I dig the ease of the Wii online gaming, no costs, it connects to my wireless automatically and boom, I am online, setting up channels and racing people from all over the world, instantly.

Both GoW and Halo series are Microsoft only games, as Microsoft makes them.
Microsoft doesnt make Gears of War or Halo....

Maybe technically, but they are both exclusive games to the 360, Microsoft owns the rights to both games.

Nope GOW is not an option for him... I let HALO slide because I could not figure out why it had an M rating.. Ive seen worse on Spongbob cartoons..
I was thinking of getting GTA for me not him.. But then I noticed that GTA4 is coming out on PC Nov.. So I will just buy it for the PC.
I personally don't like consoles much and this would be for him only usually.
One of the biggest problems I had with Original Xbox was the Title Selection.. But then again I did buy him that Xbox when the Xbox 360 first came out... And they stopped making games for it soon after.
Like I said Im a thrifty person.. Could not justify buying at the time a 500 dollar game system.. But when I found the Xbox Primiums on Ebay and payed 170 bucks for it just yesterday that sounded like a good deal to me....
I was conteplating buying a broken system for 50 bucks and fixing it myself.. But then I figured oh well I buy this one and get the little warrenty the guys have for it.
One last thing I will have to have it hooked to the internet to get updates right? Do I need to have a Wireless internet connection now to get it to work right? I have broadband but its hooked directly to my pc.. And his Xbox will be upstairs far away from my PC...
I won't buy the gold, but I just read the silver is free.

To get updates, yes you will need a net connection. Yes you can connect with a wireless router, I can't help you with it, I have a wired connection. Silver is free, Gold is $50 for the year. Gold allows online play.
Usually with gold you can find the prepaid cards on amazon for much much less than $50.
I know very little about gaming. What is the hard drive for?
What is the start up cost of an XBOX360 + two wireless controllers versus the cost of a Wii and two sets of controllers?
What else is needed???
Do they still make the wireless controllers for the Gamecube? Wavebird?

You will need internet for updates, some games won't play without them, this goes for all three systems, just a modern day fact of life if you want a game system. Wii works great with a wireless router, so does PS3, but XBox 360 you need to buy an adapter if you want to go wireless, I forget what it costs, but I believe its in the 80 dollar range. I have my 360 hooked up directly (physically) to my router, so I have no problems there.

The hard drive is there if you want to download demo's and other content but it's not essential to the system. The $199 360 comes with a 512MB memory card and you can add a hard drive if you ever want to. The Wii has 512MB internal memory which cannot be expanded currently.
The system and and additional wireless controller (it already comes with a wireless controller) costs $250 same as the Wii without the additional controller.

Get a system with the Hardrive. They cost up to 100 bucks a Piece by themselves.. You also need hardrives to play Original Xbox games.

Nintendo has ****ed over their original fan base in order to appeal to the casual crowd and I guess it's working well for them. I've lost alot of respect for them.
It's a console system...they are ALL for the casual crowd.
