My last smoke was at 0950 Thursday. I've quit and started back many times over the years (I'm 35), so I quit "cold-turkey" this time, with no help. Smokers are prevalent in my family, so wish me luck. Next up is drinking. I usually have 3 beers each afternoon, 7 days a week. Last night, I cut it to 2. This weekend, I'm going to cut it to 1. I've drank as long as I have smoked, and this will be tougher than qutting smoking.

Congrats and good luck. I haven't been through this so I can't offer much, but a lot of people here have. Your friends here will help you through it.

Congratulations, quit drinking and smoking, you'll have more money for guns.
I smoked for 35 years, if I quit anyone can.

Great news!! I wish you the best.

I was recovering in a hospital bed from minor surgery. The Doctor gave me a plastic tube with a ping pong ball inside and told me to exersize my lungs. I could not get the ball to the top of the tube by blowing into it. I told myself, this is my future, with some form of COPD. I promised myself right then and there that I was done smoking. I quit in the bed while playing with the ping pong ball contraption. I was ****ing done with killing myself slowly.

My Father, who has COPD and CHD refuses to quit. It is killing him. He has so much to live for. He is retired and has started several businesses that are making him much money. It will all be for nothing. Anytime he catches a cold, it stays with him for 4 months. His immune system is for ****. Someone with so much education, who chooses to be so stupid. I use to feel sorry for him and try to help. He refuses to change. He is always tired. My pity has run out.

Keep it up and good luck!

I quit drinking almost 4 years ago and it was one of the best things I could ever do for myself, yes I was a bit of an alkie. I'm guessing you've had the same drinking habits for quite some time now. When I had my moment of clarity I pretty much gave it up cold turkey. I was sober for a solid 6 months and after breaking my ritual it just never tasted the same nor did I get the same buzz. It really lost it's appeal. Now, I just have to stop with the smoking.

If you can't have a drink without wanting a cigarette then it's good to quit both. Otherwise you might want to concentrate on tobacco first - quitting smoking is a big thing all by itself. I quit 20 years ago and I can't even imagine lighting up again. Hang in there, it's by far the best thing you can do for your health.

That is great news!

My advice is to just embrace the pain. It sucks as you know. I would however recommend getting the patch & some of those Commit mints. Use them for months if you have to. You will get there my friend!

You can get there my friend!

I heard the patches really help...
If so I wouldn't do it without such a tool at my disposal...

All the best,

Bill

ETA: I didn't see Javelin's post above me advising the same thing...

CONGRATULATIONS:wavey: I used to smoke in the service but I quit after I got out - I started by going to dip and then the nico gum crap. I finally made some cinnamon toothpicks and those cured me right quick! Its been 3 years and I am glad I dont have that nasty crap old smoke taste in my mouth :ack:

That's a perfectly normal reaction so you can't blame nicotine withdrawal for that.

I quit smoking in December of 1998. Almost ten years now...wow.

You can make it. :)
