View Full Version : Suggestion, Shotgun for shooting clay ???
Took an into class to clay trap shooting at the local shooting center last night.
Now being at home I'm thinking of getting a shotgun for just going up to the range ... any suggestions on brand/model from other GTers?
Remington 870. Use it for hunting, home defense, and clays. Just swap barrels.
I have a Remington Spartan over/under. You can get them at Dicks for around $400 or so.
Great gun for the price. I have a 20 ga with 28" barrels. For trap, go atleast 28", maybe even 30".
Browning Cynergy, I love mine and about the nicest shottie I have ever held.
I'm a beginner too and I just bought this:

It's a 3901 Rl Target. I've only shot it twice and I have a few lessons coming up but I think it's going to be a sport I will really enjoy.

Rem 1100, they made millions of them.

I still say O/U, much easier to clean, and they are ambidextrous(if that matters).

Yeh, the O/U's are easier to clean. However I strongly recommend a Remington 1100 in 12 or even 20. They even make a Skeet version, my son owns one and it is one beautiful and soft shooting shotgun. I have a 20 Sporting in 1100, but also have a Browning over and under, actually, prefer the Browning for Dove and Quail, and use the Remington at the Skeet Club.
Good Luck, and welcome to the world of shooting clay birds.

I was thinking of buying a Mossberg 930 for the same thing the only question I had was what is the difference with barrel length? It looks like Mossy makes them in 24, 26, and 28 inches.
Is it more of a personal taste thing when it comes to balance?
Or does the swing have to match the range or target speed? For example if you are going after high flying game or targets the longer barrel slows the swing speed vs. a short barrel for fast or low flying targets/birds?
Get a decent quality 12ga O/U with 28"-30" barrels.
Have a look at what most of the tops shooters are using im pretty sure they use O/U's.
Miroku make some nice O/U's that wont break the bank if you dont want to spend big.
Morgo.

I would go with a good quality semi-auto. My personal choice for clays is a Beretta AL 390 Silver Mallard in 12 guage. In addition to the 390 and a handful of other Italian and Belgium shotguns, I have a Beretta 686 Blackwing O/U. Unless you are shooting skeet in tournaments and require different guage barrels, I wouldn't suggest an over/under for sporting clays. They are heavier to lug around and they have a respectable kick. Both of these can factor in at the end of the course.
