In an otherwise perfect drywalling job, the guys covered over one ceiling box in one room. I've got a really good idea where it is but don't want to start poking holes. Any ideas? Thanks, HH

If you are absolutely certain the ends of the wires are covered, as in with wire nuts, you can try energizing the circuit and using a stud finder with the wire checker thing.

You can use a flash light or small laser pen to shine along the surface of the ceiling. By that I mean get a ladder and lay the laser or flash light on the ceiling and angle it slightly back and forth. It should show you the hump the box is creating. One or two small holes very close to the box should be covered by the light fixture. If you miss with the first hole you can take a piece of electrical wire and bend it, insert it into the hole and use it to feel around for the box. 1/8 inch holes are very easy to fix.

Just another option to the other suggestions. Good luck.

The same thing happened when I built. I got the electrician back to find it.

Here's the best way to do it....take a 4' level or other straight object. Set it on the ceiling and look for the spot where it rocks the most. It will rock over the top of the box because the box pushes down and makes the ceiling not level there. Then rotate the level 90 degrees and do the same thing. You should be able to narrow down the spot to within an inch or so.

if it is just a ceiling box, go in the attic and locate it then you'll know for sure.

I second the level idea, that's usually how it gets done. Electricians usually get stuck with this too, but in all fairness it was the sheetrockers not doing their job that caused it. All it takes is spray painting locations on the subfloor before the rock goes up, but only the really good drywall contractors figure this out.

Bingo. Nice and simple.....if you can get to it.

A competent drywall guy will be more than happy to come back and find/fix a screw-up like that; mistakes happen to everyone at one time or another, what separates the men from the boys is how they deal with their mistakes.

Thanks gents! I used the flashlight method and got it on the second try with a barbeque skewer. HH
