View Full Version : Corroded ammo
I have some ammo with some sort of corrosion on the brass. How should I dispose of it? I do not have a bullet puller. Can I use pliers to tear it apart, dump the powder and then pop the primer?
Is there some better way to do this?

I just wipe the green stuff off and shoot it. It works fine in my AK 47. You could build a camp fire and throw it in.
Seriously, if it is not too bad you could just wipe it off and practice with it, cleaning the gun after. The bullet pulling thing would be good in my opinion.
I don't think I would use pliers. But don't take my advise, I never had this problem. I would guess that there is something on the internet about this.

It is not green or anything like that. It is some kind of white stuff. Do not want to put it in a chamber. Not sure it would fit right anyway. Prefer to just dispose of it.

OK on using pliers to loosen and pull the bullets. Be very careful in discharging the primers. Some of them (large rifle primers) can develop a lot of pressure and may blow out of the primer pocket forcefully. You could be hurt.
Burn the powder in small batches using a long gas match to ignite it. Have fun.

Thanks.
My son will love the burning powder part.
How would you suggest I discharge the primers? Hammer?

How many rounds have you got to discard?
I'd put them in the trash a few at a time, it won't blow up the garbage truck or the dump.

Not too many. Around a dozen.
It just makes me nervous throwing away live ammo.

You have to be pretty careful with the primers. It is possible to have one blow out of the primer pocket if you use a hammer and punch to strike it.
Probably the safest way would be to clean the emptied casing, chamber it, and fire the primer. The cases should go in easily if you don't distort the case neck in pulling the bullets.
One other way might work but is riskier. Clamp the case sideways in a vise and standing to the side, use a Bernz-o-Matic torch to cook the primers off. BE careful if you use that method. You could have hot flying primers.

if you don't want to deal with setting the primers off you can pull the bullets as mentioned above burn the powder then put the casing with the primer into a container with mineral or motor oil and let set over night that will destroy the primers then just dispose of as you normally would used brass. thats the method I use for making dummy primers for dummy rounds
