on TV this evening. The team just completed a mission with the aide of a knockout gal as a go between. As she was getting dressed and rearming herself with her various weapons, one of the unit members noticed she was packing a 45acp and asked her why a 45 and not a 9mm. Her response was "Which would you rather get shot with". No answer to that question from the team.

Well I love the .45 acp, but a 9mm hollowpoint, say a 115 grain JHP at 1350 feet per second(Corbon) will be just as ugly on a target as a .45 acp hollow point. Just my opinion...

Yeah TV is great  - for the record - more goats dropped with a 9mm then with a .45. Granted goats arent people been a good measure for me though, still makes me laugh when people look at the physical size of the round and think WOW what a difference. Bit like comparing the physical size of a hard drive.

I will stick with a 9mm and more bullets over some of the crew served 45's out there

Once again, it's TV. No relation to reality. Especially "reality" TV. Do yourself a favor. Read a book, you have a better chance of learning something useful.

I'm pretty sure it was a 454 Casull derringer though. :whistling:

Yeah, I gave up on the show early second season. Too much wife drama.

Based on?...........
doubt youll notice the difference - depending on where it hits you and if the round does what its supposed to - in the case of JHP's as long as it opens and does some serious internal damage and dosent hit a vital spot then that will cause alot more blood loss which can also cause something to stop, with an FMJ the margain for where the bullet needs to strike is smaller due to the simple fact it wont expand and cause as much internal damage. From my own experiences of shooting animals ive found 9mm's open up alot more often then with the .45 - most of the time ive seen the .45 not expand at all, as for FMJ's well bottom line is 9mm's (especially Nato spec) do alot better at penetration and going through barriers. But hey as others have said no one wants to get hit with either.

Neither one is my answer.

I did like the fact that she used a BUG though. Another thing that struck home with me was at the end of the show, "Only the cover is true." This was said in reference to assuming new identities and trying to remember the "cover".

The old life gets left behind and the "cover" becomes the only life you know if you want to be sucessful.

Perhaps...

But if you HAD to be shot with one of the two, would you prefer to be shot with a .45 ACP toting a premium 230 gr JHP at 900+ fps? :)

THe .45 ACP will always be a bigger, heavier bullet, and will always outpenetrate, and will NEVER shrink!

Why are you even watching with the sound on? That type of show was the purpose for which the MUTE button was invented!

It can't be as bad as CSI Miami...

I remember catching about 5 minutes of a show. They were investigating a drive by shooting. The female detective went to the tire and found a bullet. She looks at her boss and says..."This is a death talon bullet...They must be professional hitmen doing this...."

I kind of tuned it out after the whole Death Talon comment. Needles to say, I will never watch that show again.

And yet the typical .45 may not expand as much, penetrate common barriers as well, shoot as flat, hold as many rounds, conceal as well or drop a bad guy any faster than a good 9mm round in a typical CCW sized pistol.

Other than that, the .45 wins hands down.

What you don't like the fact the Forensics guy kicks down more doors with his gun drawn than the regular cops?

I just look for the tight shirts and heels (usually white) at a crime scene.

Sure itll never shrink, but in my own experiences on shooting living things its alot less likely to expand even with 'premium' JHP's - fact of the matter is its slow. Ive had even cheap/budget 9mm JHP's expand nicely on living things - that means more damage internally added to which - .45 aint so good for barriers. Only seems to be vocal idiots touting the .45 as the be all and end all as opposed to guys who seen what the 9mm can do in the right hands who just tend to not really bring it up and just go get the job done.

She then pulled out a derringer out of her boot to finish off a guy.

Which was the incredibly stupid part, she had just fired a grand total of 1 round out of her .45 and she stopped to reload with a radio in her other hand and the bad guy is down with just a leg wound and still in possession of a holstered pistol.

What the hell!

I never would have gone for the reload with 6+ rounds available and even if caught flat footed like she was my first reaction would have been to shoot him with the .45 in my strong hand that still had a round in the chamber.

But if she had done that she wouldn't have dropped a military hand radio 3.5 feet onto soft sand and broken it as a plot device.

Got a quick question for the entire group. Assume you're in her shoes and for some stupid reason you went for a reload, you're standing there with the gun in your strong hand, a walkie talkie and a magazine in your weak hand, the mag between forefinger and thumb and your arm somewhere between waist level and your gun. Chime in if you honestly think you can draw a gun from your boot starting from a standing position faster than you could have gotten the magazine inserted.

It was a rhetorical question. It does not require and answer.

And it was a reflection of the military reality.

People who shoot people (wasn't that a Barbara Streisand song?) are more likely to want the largest projectile possible.

Sorry that aint right, biggest projectile dont mean most damage, a 9mm Nato spec is much better at barrier penetration than the .45, ammo more readily available, higher capacity and not much more difference as far as stopping power goes compared to the .45 generally speaking. Soldiers ive shot with from the SAS whove done tours in Afghanistan have no probs using the 9mm - ill take there word over internet 'my bullets bigger than yours' anyday.

Howdy,

I'm pretty sure it was a 454 Casull derringer though. :whistling:

Yeah, I gave up on the show early second season. Too much wife drama.

Way too much wife drama!!

Back in the "Day" when I was in the military, 99% of the operators were very young (heck, I was old at 24,) and single. There was only one guy in my group that was married and he got married right before he got out. I look back at things I did for Uncle Sam when I was 24yo and now that I'm 44yo w/ a wife, kids, mortage, 401(k), etc. there is no way that I would do those things now.

But, every now and then, I think it would be kinda cool/neat/a rush/whatever to go Iraq w/ Blackwater. I even sent off for an employment package from them. They sent it to the house FedEx and my wife got home before I did and she kinda blew a gasket!:whistling:

Paul

P.S. I was not a SF/Seal/Rambo type of guy. Just a farm boy from Arkansas who was good with a gun.
