View Full Version : 1911, which weighs more loaded??
Springfield EMP with 10 rounds of 9mm(26 oz empty)
Springfield EMP with 9 rounds of .40 (27oz empty)
or
Kimber Ultra CDP II with 8 rounds of .45? (25 oz empty)
Looking to get a new carry gun, and these are my choices, and I want to know which one will be more comfortable to carry on a daily basis. They are all about the same size. Also, will an EMP fit in a standard 1911 holster?
Please dont' start a caliber war here. I have all 3 calibers already, and would probably get either the 40 or 45. I'm leaning towards the Kimber.
Total weight, with ammo, will depend on the round you carry. However, a good estimate will be to add 5-6oz to the unloaded weight for the ammo. Don't forget to include the weight of the magazine too.
I've never handled an EMP before, but own a Kimber Combat Carry (predecessor to the CDP series) and it's light enough to easily carry all day with no issues. If you're planning on carrying IWB and cocked & locked, be sure that your holster has the extra material on the hoslter (sometimes called a slide-guard) to prevent the hammer from digging into your body.
I have 2 1911's already, a full size Springfield, and an officers size Kimber. The Kimber is kinda the max weight I can comfortably carry, it's probably around 28 or 29 oz empty, and even so, by the end of the day it's somewhat uncomfortable.

Loaded, the weight difference will propbably be less than an ounce, maybe two at most. It is difficult to give an exact loaded weight, without knowing which round, or type of ammo you will be carrying.
I would pick which ever caliber you feel comfortable with using for self defense (not starting that argument), and which ever gun you shoot the best, in that caliber.
Well, then how is recoil in a 3" 1911 in .45 vs. .40 vs. 9mm?
I have a 4" Kimber, and shoot it better than any other gun I own.

I have the EMP in 9mm, Kimber Ultra CDP II in 9mm, and Kimber ultra CDP II in .45 acp.
The one that see's the most amount of carry time is
the Kimber Ultra CDP II in .45 acp.
I can have it loaded with 7+1, and then carry a ten round magazine for a re-load. The recoil from the gun is not bad at all.
The small 1911's in 9mm, have almost no recoil shooting normal ball ammo, and very little with self defense loads.
If I am going to carry a 9mm, it is usually a Walther PPS in 9mm. It holds the same as the small 1911's in 9mm, and is lighter weight.
