Ok, So I've decided that I want a nice little starter scope/rifle combo in .308 I've been looking at the Savage 11fxp3 package ( bolt action, synth stock, accutrigger, scope deal). I've seen them for:

$399 at Dick's
$419 at Gander
$379 at Walmart

is it worth it to go to walmart and save the $20? or would you go to one of the other places? do they usually give you what's in the display case or do they pull out an untouched one out of the back? is the quality of the walmart ones the exact same as the others? the only reason I ask is because someone told me that the ruger 10/22's are different from walmart. what are your thoughts and if you me would you buy this rifle from walmart?

If you deal with Wal-Mart you not only save money but you got someone to cry to other than the factory if it does not work right.
Anytime I ever had a problem with anything Wal-Mart made it right.

They can sell guns cheaper than gun stores because they buy alot more from the factory at one time and then warehouse them.

Ask for one in back is what I do.

I bought my last Mossberg from Walmart. I would do so again without hesitation. I bought the only one they had in stock...so it came directly from the case. However, it was flawless. There were no handling marks, scratches, or anything.

The only thing I didn't like about my Walmart experience was that it took so long for a manager to come and finalize the sale and then walk me out of the store. You might be better off making your purchase in the morning on a weekday instead of on a Saturday afternoon like I did. They paged a manager about 4 times before someone responded almost 30 mins later.

You'd be amazed at how many people really do believe that.

Um, huh?

Savage makes great rifles. AccuTrigger is quite well received, too.

20 bucks is 20 bucks. unless your flush with cash and it dont matter, i would go where it is cheaper, Wal Mart. Also if they have one in the back, i would ask for that one, but i dont think it would matter too much.

Yes they are the same guns.

Long time a go a doctor friend of mine wanted a Browning .22 rifle. I told him that rifle was at Wal-mart. He gave me this look of revultion and asked, "but are they any good?"

Browning is browning. Winchester is Winchester. Ruger is Ruger. Yes the Wal-mart guns are the same as at any more expensive fancy place.

What you don't see at Wal-mart is a huge line of different models.

Savage makes cheap rifles, granted they shoot ok especially for the money, but I certainly would not claim that Savage makes great rifles by any stretch of the imagination.

I guess one could say that AccuTriggers are good, but that is true only when they are compared to other "lawyer-approved" triggers.

We need to try to keep information about the various firearms discussed here on GT as accurate as possible, I know that is hard to do sometimes because we all can fall victim to the whole "cheerleading fanboyisms" when we are talking shop about a firearm that we really like.

GTFord, I hope you dont think I am picking on you or anything, that is not my intention at all.

I've bought plenty of guns from Walmart and NEVER had any problems with any of them. Good friend of mine works in the Sporting goods dept, the same rifles they sell in any other store are the same ones they can special order.

:steamed:With that said... Walmart will not let me buy the Savage Tactical Rifle in 308, because it says "Tacticle" in the name. Walmart policy.

If you are buying the "Package" gun with scope included just be sure to check what comes in the package. The rifle and scope will be the same as other places, but sometimes WM does not incl. the same thing as packages sold at the LGS or other sporting goods stores. The WM package may not incl. swivels and sling and the other store might. Have never bought a gun from Dick's or Gander, so have no comment on what is included there.

I don't think you're picking on me personally, I just think you're misinformed. I'll start a new thread on the subject.

I think ALL the above are selling factory rejects, and I have some facts to back me up. Bought a pump Mossberg at Walmart, only to find out the grooves for the choke insert were reamed too deep and left really nasty chatter marks inside the bore. Bought another shotgun at Gander Mountain just to find out the rib was mounted off center, and the sights did not line up. At least Mossberg made it right. Bought a Thompson Center barrel from Cabelas, and this too had nasty machine marks inside the barrel.

They can deny it all they want, but I am convinced the "seconds" go to the chain stores.

If you buy it at Wal-Mart, a member of the store's management team will actually carry it out to the parking lot for you.

That kind of superior old-fashioned personal service is getting harder to find lately.

I have to say, I find it immensely amusing when they insist on escorting my unloaded rifle out of the building while I carry a loaded handgun on my hip.

And I've bought a couple rifles from Wal-mart. They have a miserable selection around here and are even more paranoid about filling out form 4473 than a regular gun store, wouldn't let me even abbreviate the word street with the standard post office abbreviation, but the guns are the same as anywhere else.

You obviously have little to no experience with Savage.

How about this example?

I purchased a Savage 93R17 with an accutrigger and standard profile barrel from Wal Mart for about $130 bucks. I put a Nikon Prostaff 3x9 optic on it.

My wife and I liked the 17HMR and this little tack driving Savage so much that I bought my wife a Marlin 917VS from Sportsmans Warehouse for $310. This gun is stainless and has a bull barrel. We then mounted a Burris Fullfield 3x9.

Not only is the trigger worlds better on my cheapie Savage, my "crappy" Savage with it's STANDARD PROFILE barrel also outshoots the Marlin with it's BULL BARREL. The Savage consistantly shoots groups 1/4" to 1/2" SMALLER than the Marlin.

Yup, Savage must be junk!!!
