I use Hoppe's #9 and a brush wrapped in Chore Boy. (or similar copper scrub pad) Cuts it out pretty well and without too much scrubbing.

I have heard that turpentine on a tight patch will remove lead. There is also the "Lead Free Cloth" that you can cut patches from.

The Lewis lead remover is a product that is made just to remove lead. Finish up with J.B bore paste and Kroil oil. Once you have removed all traces of the leading start finding out what went wrong in the first place. Load too hot? It's hard to find lead bullets that don't have beveled bases, but it's the bevel that can cause leading. (The bevel makes the bullet a whole bunch faster to cast). back in the day national bullet co made a good bullet. near the end they cut so many corners that speeded up their own end. Now they are just another bullet Co. that closed their doors. To tell you that so and so makes a good bullet that has worked well for me is just asking to start a flame! I can't think of any of the bigger companies that won't sell you a trial package. Like 25 bullets for 5 bucks. Call or E-mail around and draw your own conclutions.
Actually, Hoppe's (and any of the similarly-formulated compounds) has NOTHING that dissolves lead in it.
In the "old days", one of the BEST things for removing lead was..........MERCURY. Old time shooters that shot lead out of RIFLE barrels would stop up one end of the barrel, and fill the bore with mercury. After a while, the mercury dissolved the lead and put it into suspension, and then you poured the mercury out for reuse later.
Of course, no one knew about mercury vapors that were given off when you fired the arm the next time, but it did a bang-up job of getting lead out.
Nowadays, the two best methods of lead removal are either (1) mechanical, with the Lewis Lead Remover being the best of that type, or (2) electronic, with the Outer's "Foul-Out" being the most common machine. Both of them beat Hoppes' (or any other commercial solvent) hands down.

Jeff is right on. Mercury is the best thing to remove lead. There is another reason to not mess with mercury. There is an obscure federal law making it illegal to posses more than 1 pound of mercury, without the proper license, they're everywhere.
