I sanded and took out all the dents and dings from the stock, then I hit her with a coat of MinWax oil stain and a coat of MinWax Polyurethane.I also touched up a couple small marks with some cold blue.So what do you guys think?

Really nice. Not sure they're supposed to look that good. They are made for uneducated peasants and kool aid drinking revolutionaries.

I wanted to refinish mine, But then I was informed that the value as a Military surplus would drop, I would love to just seal the stock which is bare and not coated with any thing and I don't want it to weather.. Although I think it is sealed with some sort of wax now..

Looks great.
I would not worry about the collector value of an SKS. I am not sure there will ever be a huge collector market for an SKS.
From the picture, it looks incredible.
I hope you are planning on shooting it. Enjoy.

Really?
The value of my $79 Albanian(all matching) must not be worth much then!!! :whistling:
Sure glad I picked up a few of them "un-valuable" SKS's.

You obviously don't know much about the SKS then.
My Russian was $159. They now sell for $450+:wow:
The Chinese were $89. They now sell for $250+:wow:
My Yugo was $159. What will it be 10 years from now?:dunno:
Will I ever sell them?
ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is the point of collecting if you sell your collection? I buy them for me and me alone! They could be worth $500 each and I still wouldn't sell them!

yup, i remember going with my uncle back in the mid-90's to gun shops. he picked up a couple norinco paratroopers for $80. they are hitting $300+ easily on gunbroker.

That is one nice looking YUGO. It's too bad it is illegal now. It was imported as C&R and if they are modified from their original configuration they become contraband. With BATFE, it's hard to tell sometime. I hope that I'm just kidding.

Nice job, looks like you did a better job than I did.
The days of cheap SKS's is coming to an end. I predict that in five years a Yugo will be $400 minimum, and the Russians that are $400+ today will be $650.

I still have an unfired/unissued Yugo sks. They're some of the best built sks that I've ever seen(read heavy). I just wish they had chromed bores.

:rofl::rofl:WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:rofl::rofl:
It loses it's C&R status - THAT IS ALL! Very easy to return to C&R status if you keep the parts that you replaced (or some that are comparable!).
Like mine.......NOT C&R at the moment, but I have everything for it, and can return it to it's original condition at any time.
Although I am not required to should I ever decide to sell it!!!!!

I said " I hope that I'm just kidding".
You just admitted that it can lose it's C&R status, if modified. Just what is it's status after you remove it from C&R ? If it's still in a legal status of some kind, why were they allowed to be imported because they were C&R ?

Here's the skinny.......:wavey:
It DOES lose it's C&R status, that is a fact. But, it is STILL LEGAL because it is your gun!!! The serial # has not benn altered, just the overall appearance. Even if you NEVER change it back to it's original configuration, it is STILL LEGAL to own, shoot, sell, or whatever it is you want to do with it.
Here's the catch though.....
Do it too many times and you will be in trouble!
The C&R FFL is a license to COLLECT - NOT deal in firearms sales!!!!!!

That's your gun and you can call it whatever you please, but it's C&R or it's illegal if modified and not rebuilt with enough US parts to satisfy 922r. That sentence may or may not be true. Just my opinion. I WAS kidding about the stock refinishing, it looks great to me and also a legal gun.
How many times is it that you can't do and what is it you can't do ? Using your logic, you can buy an AK-47, install parts to convert it to full auto and it's not illegal because the S/N wasn't changed and you still own it.
If it were mine, I wouldn't be putting it up on internet sites.

Just take your time when refinishing wood stocks.Never use chemicals(Strippers) on wood, just sand by hand(No electric sander)
1. Bake stock with some sort of high lighting source to get cosmo out of stock(I used my friends bake lights at his body shop)
2.After cosmo drips off lightly wipe stock down with Mineral Spirits.
3.Sand down to bare wood, and sand out any dents or dings in stock.
4.Finish sanding with very fine paper and end with fine steel wool then wipe off all dust very good with clean cloth.
5.Stain with a good oil stain and wait 10 minutes and lightly wipe off excess stain from stock, let dry 1 day.
6.Apply a coat of Polyurethane evenly and let dry 2 days before handling.

Refinishing doesn't affect 922R unless you replace any parts of the gun,and if you do then the rifle must contain less then 10 imported parts. You can change the stocks on these rifles but they must be fixed 1 piece stocks(No folding or adjustable position stocks) or you must play the parts game to keep legal.I have a Chinese Nirinco I'm working on now and I replaced the stock with a Monte Carlo which is still legal and I needed to replace the gas system but didn't want after market parts because that would put me in the 922R game so I found and ordered a orignal gas piston and tube.
Here's a 922R work sheet for anyone interested.

I really like the Mosins, they have good wood but the finish on them is pretty good compared to the orignal SKS rifles. What I mean is the SKS orignal finish sands off really easy because they used a stain the didn't penetrate through the wood pores(Only a surface stain)but the Mosins have a good oil stain on them that penetrated the stock a little and they require a really good sand job to get that wood bare and ready for refinishing. They look really nice when there done so just be patient and start sanding:wavey:

I have said "just kidding" at least 3 times. It was intended as sarcasm.
If you will read my quote you will see where I said the stock refinishing was nice and a legal gun. I know you can make minor modifications to a C&R without affecting that status. Sometime it's not so black or white though.
Peace Y'all

It really sucks how the Government dictates what we do with something like a C&R rifle. It makes no sense that I can buy a AK 47 Yugo with folding stock, but if I change a Norinco SKS stock to a simple folder I now have to spend a couple hundred bucks to make her less then 10 imported parts:upeyes:
Anyway you take care AustinTx and I wish I was there in good old Texas with you:wavey:

That is the one good thing about buying FTF, The feds by the time they hunt it down, Most likely the guy that sold it to you will not remember you and they will not be so able to find it.. I purchased one and if I want to change it, I will.. This ruling is nothing but a form of gun control..
They can control their guns, Mine, they can wish too.

Watch what you say on a open forum,if GT can see your IP address I'm sure the government can also.If you ever use that rifle in self defense you better pray it's 922R compliant. All my weapons are 100% legal because if I ever have to use them I don't wont to give some scumbags lawyer any extra ammo against me.

The IP that is shown is not my IP, I use ghost IP and it is never my unhiden IP, But the SKS I have available for home use is Surplus issue, Meaning it is still C&R status , so it has not been converted and it most likely never will since it hangs on the wall and is pretty, Heck the stock is still military rough and I wish it wasn't, I wish it was smooth and varnished or whatever some of them look like.. But thanks for the reminder, I should not have said that..
