Just curious what 10mm owners are using for home and self defense. So far I've been using Georgia Arms 155gr gold dots/ 180gr FMJ and DT 200gr beartooth in my new G20. I am considering DT's 135 noslers? How does this round perform?

Those wimpy things would bounce off of me like Popeye after spinach...
I keed i keed.. They would end hostilities quickly with good shot placement.
I'm sure the flash and concussive effect of those would be very fierce indoors. That's a lot of powder burning
IMO - the GA 155gr Gold Dots are a most excellent choice. So are Winchester's 175gr Silvertip @ 1250-1275 FPS.
It's almost hard to pick a "bad" 10mm load - LoL

In personel testing of the Nosler 135 they lose the jacket on entry when fired at 1250 fps. I can only imagine the problem would be much worse the faster they are driven. I would look to the XTP bullets to stay together, expand reliably and go very deep if not through and though. I use the 155's in the 40 and 180's at 1325fps in my 10mm. The DoubleTap 180 would be a great self defense load. For self defense I like the heaviest bullet that will leave the muzzle at 1250+fps.

IMO, using a 135 gr bullet for a 10mm is like using an 88 gr JHP in 9x19...
Bad idea...
Hornady makes some nice ammo, the 200 gr XTP is loaded to the same velocity as +p .45 ACP ammo, 1055 fps, very controllable....

I use 175gr Silvertips for cc and 200gr xpt/dd taps for home defense
I am a newb when it comes to understanding the different grains for ammo. I recently purchased a G20 and it hasn't came in yet. I will be purchasing ammo from DT. Could you guys explain to me what the difference is between the different grains available? My G20 will be used for CCW and home defense purposes.
Thanks,

Read the comments at Double Tap concerning each 10mm load. Pretty straight forward. The G20 is an excellent platform for the 10mm. All I can say is choose wisely on which load you plan on using. From time to time, touch one (1) round off while not wearing hearing protection so you wont be surprised when you have to do it with your balls on the line.
As an aside, I practice with the DT 180 grain FMJ and carry the Winchester 175 grain Silvertips. Using "Canned Heat" from Georgia Arms is a good way to break in the piece.
I won't touch their standard JHP stuff, but give the CorBon DPX and PowrBall a look.
Both work 100% every time I've run them, both are accurate with low recoil, and both fit their niche well (all-around duty/CCW load and indoor HD load, respectively).
Be aware that, unless raw numbers/velocity/barrier penetration are your primary criteria, that certain bullets (the 180gr Gold Dot specifically) can yield a narrower wound channel at high speeds than they would at low speeds. Some GDHP bullets will round-out and fold back when driven outside their velocity envelope. This will most likely happen in the first 1-3 inches of tissue, so the overall wounding potential is less than if the bullet expanded to maximum diameter and stayed that way.
Howdy,
Winchester 175 grain Silvertip.
+1,000!!!!:wavey::wavey:
These is the best SD round made for the 10mm. It's also a great hunting round.

I'm pretty firm on Double Tap 155gr Gold Dots in 10mm for all around SD against humans (when I enter bear country it's another story). The DT 135gr Nosler bullet load has quite a bit to be desired in many common SD scenarios. Fragmentation is almost always going to be 100%. If you get a straight on shot of the torso of the BG, ok. But if not, and you hit the BGs arm or something else first, penetration will more than likely not be adequate for the situation.
I would consider the 135gr round "good", for, in particular, apartment defense, and also to some extent for house defense, especially when other family members may be near by. Otherwise, IMO, the 155gr Gold Dot loads are a much better choice overall, DT or GA. Can't wait till I can just reload my own.

Right now I'm carrying handloads. 155gr XTP @ ~1,550 fps - Glock 20. I figure if you're gonna carry the 10mm, might as well carry a 10mm!

Thanks,
Being the proud new owner of a 10mm you will be pleased to know that the bullet grain is not really important. All you have to do with a 10mm is get close to your target and the concusion will knock them flat. :whistling:
I use 175g for self defence and 200g DT beartooth for boar.

All I have for 10mm is the 175gr Silvertip and then 180gr Starfire "Lites".
I think either will do the job.

When you're looking at factory ammo, "grains" always refers to the weight of the projectile. It's just another unit of measuring weight. 7000 grains weighs a pound. So 200 grains is about .46 of an ounce. 135 grains is about .31 of an ounce. Grains is also used as a way to measure the amount of powder on the cartridges too, but when you buy factory ammo, they won't ever mention how much powder they are using. They'll just make a velocity claim (which is often exaggerated). People who do their own reloads though, always have to know exactly how much powder they are using.
Generally, light bullets go faster, and hit with more total energy (because energy is proportional to velocity squared), but as is the case with 135 grain 10MM ammo, the bullet will fragment and not penetrate as deep. Heavy bullets will penetrate deeper even though they move more slowly, but might go through the bad guy and hit the neighbors, depending on the caliber. With the heavier 10MM loads this is a realistic concern.
A long time ago in another thread glock20c10MM posted some very good info on actual test data using different projectiles, and I took some screen snapshots of it. Here is the 10MM part of it.

I think the vast majority would agree with that, if we were billionairs and could afford it.:faint:
Double Tap loads, 155, 135, 165 grain, or Winchester Silvertips, 175 grain. You cant go wrong, pick away!

For defence, 175 gr. Winchester Silvertip, will be plenty.
Good Luck.

Hornady 180gr HP/XTP commin out G29 can't fail:supergrin:
Ditto on Hornady 180gr XTP (1180fps from a 5"). Super accurate!!
I have used the DT 180gr GoldDot, but they work my little Dan Wesson Commander pretty hard (brass ejects about 30')...
