Before I post my list, you will have to recognize how schizophrenic my curent agency is, especially about guns. Every new FTU chief who comes in, (who are all mega gun nuts) has his very defined opinion on what our firearms needs are. For years, I'm at 24 plus.
First agency : .38 special Smith and Wesson, model 49 - had to purchase myself. Edited to add a CZ-75 I forgot I bought and carried that I sold to buy the P226.
Second agency: .357 Smith and Wesson, model 13, agency issued.
9mm SIG P226, (had to buy myself), and my old S&W 49.
Third agency: 9mm 6906 Smith and Wesson - agency issued. I gave it back after two range sessions where I couldn't get it to go through two mags in a row without jamming. Then carried.........
9mm SIG P226, that I had bought at the last job, and the 49.
Fourth agency issued:
Glock 17
Glock 19
SIG P228 (armorer f'ed it up) then got a
SIG P226
Glock 22
SIG P229 (which I carry now)
personally owned and carried: old reliable P226
old reliable S&W 49
Personally owned: 9mm Sig239
.45 Sig 220
9mm Beretta 92
Long guns issued:
Colt SMG 9mm
Colt CAR-15 .223
H&K 53 (not very long, dammit) .223
Rock River Arms LAR-15 .223
Remington 870 with a 14 inch barrel and wood stocks, and a bead sight (old school).
Remington 870 with a 14 inch barrel and synthetic stocks, and tritium night sights (new school).
And, I would not be surprised to read this tomorrow and realize I missed a couple. Edited because I did.
S&W 645

My list isn't as impressive as those above, but here goes:
Duty Weapons:
H&K P7M8-carried about 12 years
S&W 99 -carried about six months. It did not work out with our agency and we sent them back to Smith. I don't see it listed on their website so it seems the model is discontinued.
Sig 228 -carried about 7 years to present.
Duty Shotguns:
Remington 870
Benelli M1 Super 90
Duty Rifles:
Colt AR 15 SP1 model
Colt M4 6920
Off Duty Weapons:
G27
G19
Ruger LCP
Colt Combat Commander
Sig 220 blued
Sig 220 two-tone
Sig 229 two-tone (.357SIG)

S&W M 10 (skinny barrel) with .38 spl RNL ammo. this was my first issue weapon, NEVER carried it or RNL ammo.
All the ones below are self purchased.
S&W M19 nickel with Rem 125Gr .357mag ammo
S&W M65 (Dept. issue)
S&W 681
SIg P226
S&W 4506
Glock 22
BUGS
Charter arms .38 Spl - what I really wanted was that S&W M60 but it was so much more expensive. so I settled for the charter arms. that lasted ONE shift. Got home pulled it out of the ankle holster popped the cylinder open and turned it upside down to drop the rounds into my hand and instead had the cylinder drop into my hand. The charter used a pressed in cylinder stop and mine had fallen out. it went back to the gunshop.
S&W M60
Charter Bulldog 44spl.- Had this one tuned and a metalife finish put on it.
Detonic pocket 9- heavy as a brick and kicked like a mule because of it's fixed barrel direct blowback action. the only holster I could find was the medevil torture device the Safariland "wet leg" neoprene. uncomfortable as hell and the Detonics was so heavy and bulky it looked like a squirrel was crawling up my pant leg. needless to say this BUG did not last long.
S&W M38 nickel
S&W M 640
S&W M3913- I actually carried this in a Galco ankle glove and a offside ankle rig that carried two mags for it.
LONGUNS
S&W 3000 12 Ga.
Benelli M1 the original all steel one
Benelli Super 90
Rem 870 14" bbl.- Dept Issue
Daewoo .223
H&K MP5 - dept issue
Rem 700P W\ Tasco 6X sniper scope- dept issue
Off duty guns
Colt govt .45- my first off duty gun that I would have carried on duty if they would have let me. I carried this until they finally stopped allowing SA gun for off duty.
Browning HP- carried it once in a while instead of the Colt.
Walthe rPPK-of course I bought one! James Bond had one!!! after shooting it and having it chew up the web of my hand I decided James Bond was obviously a masochist.
Colt Det Spl
Colt Agent.
Walther P5
S&W 629- customized by mag na Port. BBL cut to 3" and magnaported, action job, hammer dehorned and grip made into a round butt. a sweet shooting pistol but heavier than I wanted to carry off duty since tended to lean towards auto's. I kept it for a long time though as a competition gun, it was a killer bowling pin shooting gun with Med power flat point .44 mag loads.
Once I purchased the Sig P226 I got the Sig P 225 for off duty, carried it for a while. then decided to just carry my on duty gun for off duty. and I stayed with that thru the S&W 4506 and my final Duty gun the G22

All the Smiths I have had (except the issued model 99) were reliable and were built like tanks.
The 4506 was an excellent weapon, I had mine given a reliability\action job by Novaks. and I had the straight backstrap grips rather than the curved ones.
Shortly after I purchased mine I talked the chief into finally dumping revolvers and the entire Dept. transitioned to the 4506. We never had any problems with the 4506 even shooting the Rem +P ammo in them.
I had tried out the 645 when it came out and did not like it at all, the grip angle was awkward.

+1 on the grip with the straight backstrap.
I had this on my 4046 as well.

The only gripe I ever had with my 4506 was that it would not reliably function with the round i really wanted to carry. the Speer 200gr. lawman load known as the "flying ashtray". It functioned flawlessly with every other ammo. And even after Novaks tuned mine it still was not reliable iwth that ammo.
But that was just a quirk with that particular gun. I tried out the speer load in the stock dept. issue 4506's and they fed it with no problem.

11 years come Monday at the same place. I've been talking about maybe leaving for another agency "someday" since the first day.
5906-issued POS, more than likely it was the old 14 round mags and broken extractor that made it so bad.
HK USPF .45-very nice but way too big for my small fingers.
4506-good but still not the 1911 I would have preferred.
92FS-One of my faves. I will buy my old one when it gets phased out.
G22-new chief, new firearms policy w/i one month.
P220R-Very nice. Still consider carrying it from time to time but...
Colt 1991A1-Just what I have been waiting for all this time.
For longarms at my time in the PD it has been:
MP5 semi only in 10mm. I really miss this one. I never really cared that is could penetrate vests because I could do headshots without having to remember mechanical offset and ballistics from 0 to 50 yards.
Now Colt AR-15 6920. Pretty good but they are pool guns so it is really just a cool looking shotgun for most.
A lot of people have been asking if we can have shotguns but theat won't happen with the grumpy gus in charge of the instructors. Flitecontrol wads, slugs, and anything other that bead sights don't exist because he says so.

I didn't realize there were any Departments that didn't allow shotguns.... I know a bunch that don't allow "evil black rifles," but shotguns?
Back when I was assigned to Baltimore, they couldn't carry or use shotguns (that's been ten years ago so it may have changed).
We even had a couple of city sargents try and tell us we couldn't carry ours, or our AR's when working with them. Apparently, the chief back then, I forget his name, thought they were too intimidating and scared the criminals too bad.
I didn't realize there were any Departments that didn't allow shotguns.... I know a bunch that don't allow "evil black rifles," but shotguns?
We have three shotguns in the PD and close to 30 ARs. The shotguns are all 870 Wingmasters. Two don't have the flextab in the shell lifter they are that old. When did they put the flex tab in anyway?
Anyway one gets used to send new firearms instructors to instructor school. It is rusted with a 20" bead barrel.
One is asigned to the ESU team with an 18" bead barrel, extended mag, folding stock, and wood fore end. It has traces of a finish on it. It is used for bean bags.
The last one is in pretty decent shape. This one actually has the newfangled flextab, composite stock and fore end, 18" bead barrel, no mag extension. The only problem is they have a 5" breaching attachment lashed onto the end of the barrel. This get used for breaching for ESU. This is the one that people are pushing to replace the most. They hate having to breach a door with something that is essentially the same length as a duck gun.

That's a very foreign concept to me. Here, we may have up to three shotguns in every car. One for each officer and a green painted Ithaca for less than lethal rounds. However, if given the choice, I would take an AR any day over a shotgun. I really think an AR does everything that a shotgun does with none of the shortcomings.

My PD issues firearms, and that is what you are supposed to carry for uniformed duty. So my list is pretty short since I just started in 1996.
-Duty pistols:
Sig P220 .45 ACP with 200gr Gold Dot +p
Glock 31 .357 w 125gr Gold Dot
-Duty shotgun:
Rem 870 Police w/ speedfeed stocks and surefire light forends (fed low recoil buck and slugs)
*we also have orange less lethal Rem 870's in the trunk with bean bag rounds
-Rifles:
Colt 6721 AR15A3's w/ sirefire lights shooting Bloack Hills 55gr soft points.
Rem 700P .308's (for snipers only) w/ Leupold 3.5-10 scopes shooting BH 168gr match
-Personally-owned off-duty/backup pistols:
Star PD .45 ACP
Springfield Armory Champion .45 ACP (was very unreliable so I traded it)
Springfield Armory 5" .45 ACP (same problem - unreliable)
Smith mod 66 .357 (love this thing)
Glock 21 .45ACP
Glock 19 9mm (traded when we went to the .357 sig round - free ammo is cheap)
Glock 32c .357 sig
-Personally owned rifles:
Armalite M15A2 (customized by me into a precision rifle) w/ Nikon tactical glass
Rock River SBR (basically a RR receiver I built into an SBR for vehicles/close quarters)
Custom Rem 700 in McMillan A5 stock with Burris XTR scope
Custom Rem 700P w/ a few different stocks and IOR glass

C'mon now...I was only bringing home $610 a month and $622 if I had court 2 times.
I know, I feel shame.
I started in '88 with a S&W Model 66 and Remington 870. The next year, I added a Taurus Model 85 for a backup. In '90, they upgraded the 870s by changing the wood stocks for Speedfeeds. I never carried buckshot - just four slugs in the tube and four more in the stock.
Late in '91, we got Glock 19s, which we carried until 2000, when we switched to Glock 22s.
In '96, we got rid of shotguns and went to the H&K MP5SF in 9mm. We kept the 9mm carbines after switching to .40 for the pistols.
In '04, I finally got with the times and bought a Glock 27 for backup and off duty.
There is finally talk that we may be allowing personal purchase AR-15s in the foreseeable future. SWAT dogs can carry their ARs/M4s, but we don't have any for the rest of us. I have actually really changed my views toward the MP5, though. For most of what we do, it is a fine weapon. It doesn't penetrate like a rifle round, and doesn't have 500 yard accuracy, but reality is that no patrolman will ever take a shot beyond 50 or so yards.

I never carry buckshot in my 870, either . In fact, there was a discussion on this a week or so ago.
Up close, buckshot makes a mess, but once you get just a little distance, it becomes unbelievably ineffective from what I have seen in my career.

Shortly after the Hollywood bank robbery/gunfight, we switched over to slugs in the mag and buck on the stock.
Now we are back to buck in the gun. It seems our brass is concerned with overpenetration of the slug in this (crowded) state.
Back in 2004, we had a barricaded subject situation at one of our truck stops. This was before we were authorized to carry the patrol rifles. I was set up for a 50 yard shot with the slug, resting the Benelli on the hood of my troop car. It was a perfect setup.
The guy ended up offing himself.

Back When Joe Zambone still owned Magsafe I got some 12 ga. Slugs off him that were hollow point slugs made by Kawser with the distinctive saw toothed edge hollow point. that was not the real attraction of the rounds though. what I liked about them were that they were 1/4 of an inch shorter than the standard 12ga. shell, meaning you could load five of them in a 4 shot tube.
I tried to tallk Joe into making a 12ga. magsafe round for use in entry shotguns. he told me he would be happy to. Just as soon as I sent him the 100K he would need for the dies.

I am glad I never worked for a dept. that mandated that only a specific gun or ammo could be carried. our only rules were no single action auto's. and I can remember only one time that a officer was told he could not carry the ammo he wanted.
This guy who had been a cop, left and became a paramedic then came back. he was carrying the dept. issue M65 but instead of the 125Gr .357 mag ammo he was carrying 200gr. round nose lead ammo. He said a pathologist had told him it was the deadliest handgun round made.

My agency awitched over from revolvers to autoloaders after the killing of Trooper Lamonaco back in 1981. He was outgunned by two domestic terrorists, members of the United Freedom Front. Trooper Lamonaco disarmed one of the individuals while on a motor vehicle stop on I-80. The other subject opened fire on him with a Browning High Power.
We then acquired our Benelli M1 shotguns after Trooper Scott Gonzalez was killed in 1997 due to a shotgun blast. Trooper Gonzalez's vehicle was rammed at the end of a pursuit. He was trapped inside his vehicle (Ford Crown Vic), and was approached by his killer armed with a Mossberg shotgun. Trooper Gonzalez tried to return fire through the windshield of his troop car when his H&K became inoperable. The killer fired a shot point blank into the trooper's head.
Unfortunately, it sometimes takes something bad to happen in order for progress to be made in law enforcement.

Both tragic stories, but if the stories alone, or the new approved technology that came from them, helped to save the life of another trooper, then their deaths were not in vain. The ripple effect it could have among other agencies stands to help thousands of officers. Alot of city and county agencies watch what the state "flagship" agency does, then often follows suit.

I was still a rookie cop when Trooper Lamonaco was killed, it solidified my resolve to always carry a back up and to always have a shotgun in the front with me when on patrol. At the time the only reasonable priced hi capacity handguns were like the S&W M59, which I neither liked nor trusted as a duty weapon. the H&K was expensive and still had the mag release on the heel. And the browning Hi Power was out because no SA were allowed. I finally made the switch to an auto when The Sig P226 became readily available. Which at the time made me the only cop in any Dept. in my county that carried an auto.
My first department required you to provide your own.
I started with a S&W Highway Patrolman- Got tired of lugging it around and switched to a S&W Model 15 with an Armaloy finish then changed to a S&W Model 65.
I don't recall what we used for shotguns.
My second department issued weapons.
I started with a S&W Model 64 heavy barrel. Then the Ruger Service Six. Around 1990 we transitioned to the Glock 19. In the mid 90's we changed to the Glock 23. They've since recalled all the original issue 23's and replaced them with the later generation 23's, which we carry to this day.
Shotguns were the old reliable 870's initially, then a change in the early 90's to 11-87's, which we still carry.
Just within the past few years they've started to equip the cars with the collapsible stock AR-15, but not all of the cars have them yet.

Back around 1982 my dept. purchased all new mossberg shotguns. Every freakin one of them had the plastic top mounted safety break and come off during shotgun qualifications. I still do not trust mossbergs to this day.

I began my stint at the range yesterday. We will be slowly transitioning from the Sig 228 to the 229.
Our Irvington and Camden initiatives are the first to be getting them. Then our TEAMS Unit (our version of SWAT) will give up their 220's for the 229. Then the road personnel (me) will get them. I held the 229, and I like the feel of it better than the 228. We will be staying with the 9mm for now.
Hopefully I'll get a chance to shoot one this week.

I always wondered why Remington 1100's never were big with police. I used to hunt doves with one, and you could shoot that thing until it was dirty as hell and it never quit feeding and firing.

Maybe it's the sporting look to the weapon.

I think there are several reasons why the 1100's never made serious inroads in replacing the 870.
1. cost vs. cost of 870
2. fears that they were not reliable enough.
3. need to retrain officers on an auto.
4. higher maintenance requirement.
We had several 1100's besides our 870's and never had any problem with them.

I have carried a few different guns during my time in LE. The following are in order.
XD40
Glock 23
Springfield Armory Champion
Glock 31 w/.40 barrel
Sig 226 .40
back to the Glock 31
Changing this week to a P220 ST
Long Guns
Bushmaster
Rock River Entry Tactical
870
All except the 870 are personally purchased.
I have qualified at times with a
Glock 21
Glock 20
Colt Series 70
Colt CAR
Off Duty-BUG
KelTec P3AT
Kahr K40
Kahr PM9
Glock 23 2nd Gen
Sig 239 9mm
Sig 239 .40
Glock 23 3rd Gen
The Kahrs were great guns and I really miss the K40. I love Glock and when I can get on my feet financially again I will purchase and carry the Glocks again. For now I have the Sig.

As a firearms instructor, the downside is training. Anytime I have put a semi-auto shotgun in another agent's hands they screw it up (let's face it, an 870 can take quite a bit of abuse and is more or less idiot proof). From an agency perspective cost is the real deal killer. Why by and 1100 when you can buy 2 870's? If it were up to me, we would all carry Benelli M4's.

Well, I got a chance to fire the 229 yesterday and liked it a lot. It handled much like a 228 but smoother.
Speaking of the Benelli M4, we had one on hand at the range yesterday as a test model. It is heavier than the M1 and M2, and feels a lot more robust. Upon firing it, the M4 was much quicker to get back on target. We put our recommendation in for the M4.
We'll see...

I never carried buckshot either, just slugs.
Me too. Bronx Robbery Squad. Our job was to go after heavily armed robbery teams. My gun was the Ithaca 37 with 13" barrel. Rifle sights. Tube held four. Kept chamber empty while in the car (I carried the 12 gage and my partner drove). Shell #5 I kept stuffed in an opening on the mini sling they put by the pump (to keep our hands from getting in front of the very short barrel when we got "excited.").
Fine shotgun. Great for its purpose.
My handguns then (always carried two) were a S&W 10 heavy barrel and a Colt DS (for BU).
Ruger Gp100 1988 to 1992
Smith and Wesson 4506 1992 to 1996
Ruger P94 .40 S&W 1996 to 1998 (couldn't shoot it worth a damn)
Smith and Wesson 4566 1998 to 2001
Glock 22 2001 to present
Mossberg 500
Stag AR-15
Also carried a Glock 27 as a backup gun, come to think of it I have also carried an SP 101 in the same role, damn it was heavy on the ankle.
First agency:
Issued 6906s - I elected to carry a P226 in 9mm (124gn loads)
870s with 00 buck
Second agency:
Issued G22s - started the plastic fantastic love affair
870s with 00 buck became less lethal platforms
ARs in either BM or Colt - mine is a DPMS A-15
