In my car I have my AR and my 590. Right now they both reside in the trunk. Up front I have a nice rack for a shotgun, but it is made for the short ones. Mine is standard length. It will not fit at all.
I can lock the AR in it by the carry handle or muzzle-up by the stock (in front of the adjuster). It doesn't cover the trigger guard or inhibit the functionality of the weapon. You can load a magazine, chamber a round, and fire rounds even when it's lock in this manner.
I hate having them both in the trunk because the accessibility is next to none unless you know you're getting into something hairy and have time to run to the trunk. The other reason is the amount of dust that gets into the trunk, then in the gun case is staggering. I am considering selling the county's dirt back to them. No matter how well I try to maintain my long weapons they have a nice film of dirt on them after just a few miles of county roads.
Any ideas? Some of our guys put them in the back seat in cases. I believe they leave them there overnight while parked at home also. I have also seen people bungee chord them to their head rests with no other form of restraint.
Thanks.
