what's wrong with just using the disc defragmenter program contained within xp (i.e., start, all programs, accessories, system tools)? no bells or whistles, but i assume it gets the job done. ymmv.

The one that comes as part of the OS is "Disk Keeper"; I used to buy it commercially as a standalone product ever since Windows 3.11; I like it, it works fine, and runs in the background.

I prefer Rexco PerfectDisk (http://www.raxco.com/) or Vopt (http://www.vopt.com/).
