Our range is shared with a local gun club who leases it out. During quals, we only close one side (200 yard and in) while the mid range (out to 500 rifle range) stays open. During our last qual evolution, there were a few guys out shooting on our side. They heard a shot on the rifle range, then someone yelling for help. They went over and found a guy was shooting his sharps 45-70 rifle with his hand-spun reloads, and it had blown up on him basically cutting his hand in half down to the wrist. He was bleeding badly, and the range is several miles outside of town. One of the officers ran the guy code 3 toward town where they had a medi-flight on stand-by. They stopped the bleeding at the ER (most of it anyway) and felw him out. They did take a few pics after it was pretty well cleaned up. ER doc said the guy would likely have bled out if the officers hadn't done first aid and gothim to the ER. Below are a pic of the rifle and then his hand. He was holding the rifle right where it blew, and looks like the gasses went right through his hand. I have no idea how much of the hand was lost, but I heard some of it was a loss. I was not there (happened the day before my day of duty at the range) - but the guys there did a great job.

I guess it's not just Glocks that Kb.

I've heard .45-70 is easy to load too heavily, since it was designed with black powder and all. That sucks.

 to you guys for getting him the help he needed, though.

As someone who used to own a Shiloh Sharps rifle and handloaded for it, I can attest to what VinVega says. It is very easy to go overboard with smokeless powder and make a 13 pound hand grenade out of it.

I eventually went back to black powder for handloads, before I sold it.

Ouch.

I hope the docs salvaged most of the guy's hand.

Here's the earliest known image of Dragoon; shown while issuing a traffic citation, some time during the late Triassic period.

Oh not you, I'm talking about Troopers assigned to the GSP. They write each other even though it's against policy.

SDPSNYPR,
I posted this on a reloading forum. I cut and pasted it without any reference or links to you, this secret society etc. (What happens in JBT, stays in JBT). They all want to know what model of gun, the load etc. They also are praying for the shooter's recovery. If you can get any further info, and pass along their well wishes, it would be appreciated by all of them.

I figure you can't get in touch with the guy, it's not like he's your next door neighbor, but thought I'd ask.

Holy Crap!

That won't end good.

Great job by the Officer by running Code!

I run a 45/70 Marlin XLR. I know it's slow and yet have no inclination
to pump it up... or any other firearm I have.

Sorry - just saw this. I'll look at the report to see what type of gun it was, but I doubt they documented load data. I kow in the deries of pics there is a pic of the box of ammo he used, but no clue if he has a load data sticker on it. I'll see what I can find out.
