View Full Version : CCW wait?

Anyone know how long it is 'actually' taking people to get their CCW permits these days after fingerprints have been completed by county sheriff department? I know there is a mad rush right now to get them too.

I was told around 56 days... up to a 104 days?

I live in Union County in NC

Depends on the county. They're required to issue within 90 days of the application. Some counties -- like Guilford -- take all of that time. Less populated counties might take 45 to 60.

90 days in SC and if I remember correctly, if they don't approve it on day 90 then it's automatically issued. My Dad and I are almost to day 30 so we still have a bit of time to go. Ugh...

Durham County, not a day under 90.

Sorry....can't tell you what times for your county.

Four years ago, I waited 13 calendar days in Wake County.

My wife just had to wait 12.

Wow, times sure sound like they've changed.
Be happy you aren't in Guilford County.
Guilford is a 90 day waiting period minimum. There is a month wait to even get an appointment with the sheriff to complete your application.
There were at least 40-50 people in my ccw class to boot and that was just one of many days that the class was offered and every class every week is filled.
Sounds like if you DON'T carry a pistol in NC, you are in the minority.
:wow:

I was about day 80 for me in SC.
I don't remember exactly but it was almost two weeks early.
I remember doing the happy dance and going to Wal-Mart for ammo and Nachos.

I applied 2 weeks ago. He told me the same thing. Said to call around the 8th week to check if it is there.
Are you doing a pick-up or mail direct?

Can't remember the exact time in a county in Western NC...DO know I just walked in to do the paperwork, no appointment needed.

I think the girl at the desk told me it'd be two weeks, so I was freaking out when I hadn't heard anything after three. "Girls at the desk" aren't the most reliable source of estimates I guess. ;) It came in about...6 weeks, give or take, I think.

I hope that is the case with me. I turned mine in 12/16, so 3 to 4 weeks will be mid Jan, not too bad.

I filled out paperwork for a pistol permit at the same time, and they told me 1/5, whereas my last ones were in in under a week.

Are they good about calling you as soon as they come into the Sheriff's office?
Or do they 'sit' on them for a bit?

For the CCW, no clue. FIrst time applying.

Pistol permit, they tell you to call in Wake County.

They tell you to call for the pistol permit, but they call you for the CCW, and they will call you the day it comes in in wake county. That differs for each county though.

Don't hold your breath! I am OVER 90 days, called and was told that SLED is moving in order to save money so no permits have been worked on for the last few days/weeks and will not be for a few weeks. The SLED agent actually told me they do not have the money to set up the phone system/computer system and they are waiting to allocate some!

Good Luck!

That's the church version of what I said. Call Monday (if you can) and see if you get the same story, the woman I spoke to was very nice and explained the whole thing in great detail. It did not make me any happier though. She to call again in January and see what the status of the system is.

Hate to be the one to bring the bad news though and I can only imagine the bottleneck now!

waiting for your CHL permit is quite frustrating. much like being a kid and waiting for christmas.

if i recall correctly they usually do them in batches. when i applied for mine i called the sheriffs office to see if they had gotten it back yet (roughly on day 40 or so) and they said "no it can take up to 90 days." 5 days later i got mine and the issue date on the permit was the day before i called and asked about the status.

hang in there, you'll get it.

Nice to see that you have fine tastes in firearms. I'm sure that H&K will do nicely as a concealed weapon. I never could get the hang of the inside the waistband thing, much less the tuckable thing. Always seemed that the pistol was trying to destroy my kidneys. And I hated buying pants that were too big unless I was carrying IWB. If I had to stand for long periods of time, IWB might have worked better for me. But sitting in a car was pure torture... :frown:

I got mine in Meck County back when Pendergraph was Sheriff. Most people I know got a call or mail on day 90. I got pulled over on my motorcycle for an expired tag (forgot my sticker... no speeding or anything like that) at about 80 days and the cop was mad I didn't tell him about my CC.... I told him nobody informed me that I had one yet and he said I had to have been in the system for a while already to show up. Next day I called the Sheriff's office and sure enough, they had it... They just weren't going to tell me about it till day 90.

Someone said in a reply that it was taking atleast a month to get an appointment to fill out the app. I was up there on monday the 6th to make an appointment to fill out the app, and while waiting in line I struck up a conversation with a couple that was there for their appointment. They told me it took them three months to get one.... Somehow the guy behind the glass got me in two days later. I was waaaaay excited. Now I just have about 80 more days... Sheriff Harrison's office in Wake Co is really good. Some of my students have reported 3-4 weeks, one said it took just over two weeks.

And, yes, they always say it'll take 90 days.

Most of my students are saying the same 4-5 weeks in Wake, 89+ days in Durham and the all time winner for me is 1 student from Granville Co applied on Monday AM and on Thursday the same week had a VM at home saying his was ready. His wife applied the next month and hers took 7 bus days and they apologized (it was around Christmas).

I dropped off my application at the Wake County Sheriffs office on 3/14, hopefully I'll end up in the 3-5 week time frame some of you have posted.

My mom just got hers back this week. Another 3week report for Cumberland County.

Scored perfect on her test AND in the range.....

Not bad fer a 72 year old grandmother!!!

My son gets a kick out of bragging on his "packin' grandma"!!

I just applied in Wake County this yesterday Monday 4/4/2011. It seemed pretty slow at both counters... I was in and out in less than an hour. Also, now new - once approved, they are mailing the cards.

Waiting....

I like the idea of them mailing the cards now. When I got mine, the people in the office and doing the fingerprinting in Wake Co. were all very nice, and the person doing the notification sent me an e-mail when mine was in.

I'm still hoping for 5 weeks or less for you.

Just wondering if anyone in SC who has received their CWP in the last few months could post how long their wait time was. I'm in the Spartanburg/Greenville area and just recently sent in all of my paperwork. I requested a return receipt and it shows that they received my package on September 6th, so i'm expecting to receive it sometime in early December. Obviously, I've got a long wait ahead, but just curious as to what others have experienced in the last few months. Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.

I'm in Lexington county and I think it was 78 days for me. I mailed it 5-2-11 and it was issued 7-18-11. It was issued the day the new SLED chief was sworn in and came in the mail the next day

Thanks for the reply sandlapper1670. It's ashame that we even have to wait that long, but 78 days is better than 90!

I'm in Guilford County - When I got mine last year they called me on day 93. My wife *just* got hers after 96 days.

For this and other reasons, I have come to conclude that BJ Barnes is not nearly as pro-2A as he would like folks to believe.

Just thought I would update the thread for any recent applicants who may be waiting for there SC CWP to arrive. As I stated in an earlier post, SLED received my application materials on September 6, 2011. My CWP was issued on November 8, 2011 and I received it today November 10, 2011. The total number of days from the date SLED received my application to the day I received my CWP in the mail was 65 days. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised to receive it almost a month before I expected it. Hopefully others will have a similar experience.
