I just moved to VA a while back and am finally getting around to getting my VA resident permit. I hear that my training in OH cannot be used in lieu of training in VA. Is that true? If that is the case, does anyone know of any good shooting ranges that are not outrageously expensive? Also, anyone know of a good place to take my ccw class? Thanks, any help y'all could provide would help a lot!

Bob's Gun Shop [746 Granby St, Norfolk, VA‎ - (757) 627-8311]
I like the layout in Bob's gun shop, and the gentleman I've been dealing with for the passed few days was very nice and very informative. They have 3 floors. If I'm not mistaken, the directory states the following: The first floor is guns and accessories, the second is ammo, and the third is the range. I'm not sure on prices, but I will be going there sometime this week to put some money on my layaway and if I remember I will check. They do offer a firearms safety course which is needed to obtain a CCW permit.

Superior Pawn [4852 Cleveland St, Va Beach, VA‎ - (757) 248-9393‎]
They sell things other than guns, as it is a pawn shop. Parking can be difficult, I'm not sure where to park if the lot is full, I usually just leave. I *think* it's $12 a lane, $8 a rental. They too, offer a firearms safety course.

Any additional information you may need to know can be found on the Virginia State Police website.

If the training in OH was a hunter saftey or a CHP (CCW) class, you maybe ok. Do you have a certificate from the class? I would check with the county clerk's office and see.

The court shall require proof that the applicant has demonstrated competence with a handgun and the applicant may demonstrate such competence by one of the following, but no applicant shall be required to submit to any additional demonstration of competence:

Completing any hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries or a similar agency of another state;

Completing any National Rifle Association firearms safety or training course;

Completing any firearms safety or training course or class available to the general public offered by a law-enforcement agency, junior college, college, or private or public institution or organization or firearms training school utilizing instructors certified by the National Rifle Association or the Department of Criminal Justice Services;

Completing any law-enforcement firearms safety or training course or class offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies, or any division or subdivision of law enforcement or security enforcement;

Presenting evidence of equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competition or current military service or proof of an honorable discharge from any branch of the armed services;

Obtaining or previously having held a license to carry a firearm in this Commonwealth or a locality thereof, unless such license has been revoked for cause;

Completing any firearms training or safety course or class conducted by a state-certified or National Rifle Association-certified firearms instructor;

Completing any governmental police agency firearms training course and qualifying to carry a firearm in the course of normal police duties; or

Completing any other firearms training which the court deems adequate.

A photocopy of a certificate of completion of any of the courses or classes; an affidavit from the instructor, school, club, organization, or group that conducted or taught such course or class attesting to the completion of the course or class by the applicant; or a copy of any document which shows completion of the course or class or evidences participation in firearms competition shall constitute evidence of qualification under this subsection.

I've been to all the already mentioned ranges and think they are are all decent -- except Superior Pawn, there were some idiots in there both times I tried them.

If you're military, check out the range on Camp Allen (across 564 from Norfolk Naval Station). Nice range, knowledgeable staff (usually off-duty Marines), and no crowds as you must be military or civil service to use it. They have a website -- http://www.mccscampallen.com/shooting_range.htm -- check it out.

As an added bonus, when they replace range guns, they also sell their used weapons through the Marine Corps Exchange for roughly 1/2 price of new.

I'm not familiar with the area, but is that the one off Terminal Blvd?

There is "The Marksman" in Newport News off of Jefferson. I took their CCW class. Wasn't bad. You can't use Wolf ammo for your shooting test for some reason. They said my 9x18 ammo was steel core. haha
