According to the annual tradition, we went on the same "Mission to Monument" hike on the 1st of January. This is a great hike for this time of the year, as one can never foresee the weather, so it is never boring. Sometimes it is freezing and fiercely windy, sometimes you can barely see inside a cloud, sometimes it's sunny and beautiful. This time it was a combination of the last two. The hike is just short of 3000ft total elevation change, and about 10 miles long.

In the first 1000ft we were feeling our way inside a milky cloud (http://www.pbase.com/image/107691425/original).

Emerging from clouds is sudden, and the views are stunning - 1 (http://www.pbase.com/image/107691423/original)

Target is still ahead of us (http://www.pbase.com/image/107691431/original). I wonder if someone can spot the flag at the top:

And here it is up close (http://www.pbase.com/image/107691432/original).

Tourists are approaching on the northern trail (http://www.pbase.com/image/107691427/original). Kids of course have the most energy:

We follow the ridge trail, after a while we look back on Mission Peak (http://www.pbase.com/image/107691429/original). This is coyote country, but today we see only one in the distance. So, no dog pictures today, MissKitty. ;)

Descending from Monument Peak (http://www.pbase.com/image/107691434/original), the clouds below are so bright, my camera refuses to operate, and I have to shoot through my sunglasses - an improvised ND filter ;).

It's all down from here.

Really nice series! I especially like 'emerging from the clouds' #2 - that is a terrific shot of the cloud layer and surrounds.

Every January 1, no matter the weather (unless it rains for several days, then it could be dangerously slippery). Are you located in SF Bay Area? If so, we take anyone who wants to go. :)

I'm in Florida, but I'm a BIG fan of mountain trekking. Stuff like your pictures makes me want to put on the trekking shoes and go!

I'll let it slide this one time considering that incredible view from above the clouds. That is a very, very nice capture. :)
