Just waiting for Spring to finally come around and I'm searching for a good range somewhere in NW IL (Algonquin area + 20ml).

Searching I have found a very nice club in St Charles but it sounds tricky to actually become a member. I suppose to keep the rift raft out which is fine by me. Does anyone here have any experience with this club or others you could recommend?

Thanks much

There is an indoor rifle range in Aurora. It is called JR Shooting Sports. It is pricey and I only go there when I am desperate. I usually go to Buffalo Range Shooting Park in Ottawa IL. Pretty far from you, a good hour and a half, but well worth it. A quick Google search will bring you to both of their web sites.

Buffalo Rock or the ISRA range but they're both pretty far from you.

G.A.T. guns is not far from you. Not the best shape range but within 15 mins or so. If I go to a range, I try to go during a weekday before anyone gets out of work. I just don't trust people shooting around me.
Buffalo Rock isn't real close, so make a day of it. It's a nice drive in the country.
http://www.midwesttraininggroup.net is a nice place to train with the pros. They hold most of their classes in Bloomington/Normal but they occationally do some in Yorkville.

I went to a gun range for the 1st time ever and their was this guy, maybe in his early 20s and he was shooting an AR15.
The place is called Maxon Shooting Range and it's in Desplaines.

Google their website for more info...

Thanks guys. Yes I shoot at GAT all the time. But only handgun.

Maxon Shooting Range does allow rifle (not sure what cal) and it's only an indoor 50'. I'd like to shoot prone and at least an outdoor 100yd.

Any one here familiar with Sycamore?

Be sure to check out the Glock factory shoot on March 7th and 8th at GAT. Shoot any glock you want for only the cost of ammo.

If your very close to princeton, Ia or Le Claire, Ia there is an outdoor range just on the edge of princeton... fairly wide open up to 100 yards... if you follow up the mississipi towards Clinton you can find it on the right side after a big farmhouse...

JR Shooting Sports in Aurora is state of the Art, climate controlled and lead controlled. The handgun rate is $19 (unlimited) and the rifle fee is $36 per hour (kind of pricey). I have heard complaints about the pricing for the rifle range, but you really are getting what you pay for.

Nothing really up north of you, I'm in McHenry.
We usually end up going to Bristol WI.
Kind of a pain, they have a "1 round in the gun" rule for centerfire rifles.....makes it rather hard to practice for NRA rapid fire events !
Too many yuppies, all of the places I used to hunt/shoot as a kid are now housing developments.
Farther north in WI there is McMiller Sports Center, they have rifle, handgun, archery with the rifle range going out to 300 yds.
It's part of the WI DNR rather new & very nice. The staff is helpful & HUMAN !
Most of the folks that work there are shooters. Forgot, they also have trap & skeet.
Don't have an address, but you can find them on the WI DNR website.

Eeeww. Avoid. It has it's own DNR officer, but has turned into the wild west when he's not there. We have guys from all over Chicagoland join and visit our club monthly:

Milan Rifle Club, Milan, Illinois
http://www.milanrifleclub.org

$175 a year. 2 indoor handgun ranges, 600 yd, 300 yd, 200 yd, 185 yd benchrest, 3 PPC ranges and 10 burmed competition ranges. It's probably the best kept secret in Illinois! IMHO

If $175 is too steep, we also have the Oak Hill Gun Club here ($90 a year, Buffalo Iowa) just across the river.

Good luck!

Muskie,
The range you are thinking of is not there any more.
Yuppies & property value combined to eliminate it.
It was Fox Valley Rifle Range, been gone for at least 8 yrs, possibly more. I only went there a few times, was a long drive from McHenry area & back then I had (repeat, HAD) several farms I could shoot on close by. Yup, they're gone now too, & nobody has given me the updated daily limit on Yuppies or the cost of a tag......

Times sure have changed...I purchased my first Glock (G19) in 1995 from.... believe it or not MC Sports in Chicago!...now handgun ownership is banned in the city...(I'm glad that I moved to Michigan in 2002...its a much more gun friendly state)

And Daley is trying to dictate gun laws for the entire state !
With his lapdogs in Springfield, he's got almost enough pull to get his way on a lot of BAD legislation !
He can't curb crime in ChiTown, but thinks he should dictate the state laws...EgoMania at it's highest !
We won't get concealed carry here in IL until he's gone from Chi.
I personally AVOID Chi. if at all possible. At least in MI you can get concealed carry !

Yes. I couldn't agree more. I applied for my CCW within a few weeks of becoming a MI resident.

How long did it take to get it ?

The training was one full day consisting of classroom and range instruction...after that I had to wait until I was a resident for 6mo before I could apply for the actual permit (per the law.)

After applying for the permit and getting fingerprinted, it took about 4-6 weeks to actually get the permit from the county.
