View Full Version : To sell or not to sell?
I have a 40S&W chambered Browning Hi Power that I bought back during the Klinton ban years. I didn't get the 9mm because I figured that if I could only have 10rds, the 40S&W would be better. I purchased a FN 9mm with the SFS system from CDNN a couple of years ago. I really don't shoot the 40S&W now and I don't carry it for defense. The 9mm gets shot when I feel the Hi Power urge. I'm having a hard time deciding if I should sell it or not. I'm not one to sell any of my guns, but logic tells me that having a gun that you don't shoot and that's not a collector's item is kind of a waste. I don't even know what I could get for it. What do you think I should do?

I bought a new FN HP .40 on impulse at a gun show a couple of years ago with three 10-round magazines for $400. Never quite liked the appearance and balance compared to my Browning HP 9mm. A couple of months ago I did an even trade for a Springfield 1911 Loaded Champion .40. IMO, the SA Champion is a much nicer handgun.

I hear ya. I never could develop and affinity for the .40 HP. Just didn't feel right to me.
If you're that non-committal, sell it and buy something you want.

With all the hardcore longtime gungrabbers being put into positions of power since the election, some people expect the mag, gun, and ammo bans that already exist to become "law" in more places as well. That .40 is a good pistol, you might need it someday.

I concur.

I agree with Strada Man and Poohgyrr-- don't sell. I'm not selling anything, as one day we may not be able to get what we want. Hope I am wrong.
I just bought a used .40 BHP. It is not as nice as the 9 (balance and grip) but I would go into battle with it! It's accurate, powerful and controlable.
I know what you mean. I sold my .40 BHP a number of years ago because it didn't fit me as well as the 9mm Practical did... the hammer bit, the trigger pinched, and it just wasn't 'fun'.
However, if I still had it, I wouldn't sell it today since it didn't have "papers", unless I could trade it for another private sale gun. Unfortunately, I can foresee the day when being several steps down the paper trail, especially for us honest folks, will be an advantage.
FWIW... :whistling:

Strange-- my 9mm's bite at times, but the .40 didn't. I'm going to have to pay attention to my grip more and see if I am doing something different. The 9's fit great--- seem to be just a tad slimmer than the .40 cal. , and they are easy to control and accurate as hell. Yet, the 9s bite me. Go figure !??
Good point about the person to person sales.

Bret,
What I honestly think you should do is and I will do it in order, 1. Tell me if the gun is a Belgium or Belgium/Portugal 2. Tell me what you are looking for instead 3. Live happier after for having what you want
It's Belgium/Portugal. I don't know what I'm looking for if anything.
An alternative if you are partial to 9mm is to get your gun converted over to 9mm. They make 9mm conversion barrels and with one of those and probably some extractor/ejector changes/modifications you'd have a stout 9mm platform.
You probably could shoot +p+ in all day. Don't quote me on that part! That's just my imagination talking!

The .40 Hi Powers seem to work well in 9x19 with just a barrel and mags.

I bought a Beretta cougar 8045 for the same reason back then. I thought about trading it off. I just don't want to add to the list of guns I've sold that I wish I still had.

Bret: I think that I am swimming against the tide here, but I advise you
(1) to sell it for a good price after researching what that would be;
(2) to immediately invest the money in another desired firearm in a caliber you already use or would want to use.
Unless you drastically and positively change your opinion of .40 HPs, you won't regret a thing. And you would be -- in case of a darkening future -- no worse off than you are right now. I have only sold/traded four firearms in the past six years. No regrets at all. And the ones I keep but don't shoot much -- I still like them all, which is why I won't, God willing, sell them. From what you write the .40HP does not thrill you. Sell it and buy a gun that does!
I own two 9's and two 40's. I like them all. The 40's are stout and shoot well. The 9's are the best!! As advertised. But, I like them all. I don't want to sell or trade any of them. I am carrying one of my 9's today. I'm very comfotable carrying a C&L BHP. Don't know what would be better for me, just different.
Hard to find new ones and they are getting more and more expensive.
I would hang on to it... JMHO

Regarding hammer bite, with the stamdard hammer, yourself or a gunsmith can shorten it a bit - about the 2nd/3rd serration - and it should end the hammer bite problem.
The Hi-Power is my favorite 9mm, but I have no desire to ever get one in 40S&W.
