Disability

I provoked an irate response from another GT member when I wrote, "Disabled my ass."
So, if you want, paint me as a pompous ass.
In a world where Stephen Hawking has accomplished all he has accomplished, I refuse to accept anyone's description of themselves as "disabled."
It is just that simple.
Google Stephen Hawking if you don't recognize the name.
There is another fellow, deceased, whose name I don't recall. At his death, Yahoo! carried an obituary in a prominent location. It seems that this fellow was full of information about football players at the college and high school level. He was, however, afflicted with some physical ailment that shortened his life. During his live time, he studied film and read reports and recorded everything he learned in a searchable format. His sports intelligence was a recognized value and several NFL teams contracted with him to pay for access to his research.
These are only two examples, and there are many more, of people who accomplish amazing things despite having physical "disabilities".
I want you to understand that you can, too.

I would agree that Stephen Hawking is a fantastic example of what you're getting at. But everybody ISN'T a "Stehen Hawking", not by a long shot.
I do think it is valid to acknowledge that individuals are exactly individuals - as and such we all have our own challenges, talents, unique experiences, abilities and expanses, as well as restrictions, on "coping", and so on. I think there really IS no cookie-cutter with which to create people who are identical in all respects, including strengths and weaknesses. Just thoughts...... m |
