Obviously, you have to survive the confrontation in the street before you will need to worry about surviving the confrontation in the courts.
That said, the more the individuals fighting to survive know that they can handle the fight itself AND its aftermath, the better they'll be able to fight, AND prevail.
It's not either/or. It's each, in its time...and both well understood, long beforehand.
If both those understandings aren't solidly in place before the fight begins, no matter what your skill at arms, your foundation will be weak and can slip out from under you at the worst possible moment.
