Personalities wanted? Wait, I've got one of those!
Like any good superhero movie, we're going to start on this adventure with my origin story. Sadly, there will be no radioactive spiders, dying planets and kindly Kansas farmers, or anything like that. In fact, sad as it is to say, I've got no superpowers at all, so as origin stories go, maybe this one's not the most exciting, so I'll go with the short version!
I was born in California and lived there 'till I was 12, then spent the last 20 years or so in Kentucky, which is where I consider myself to have "grown up." "Grown up" in this instance means graduating high school, starting college, all that fun broken heart nonsense most people have to deal with, spending several awesome summers working at a Boy Scout summer camp, falling into a hobby that would turn into something vaguely like a career (more on that later, oooh, the suspense!), and just generally passing the time in a string of jobs I hated.
More recently, I'm a proud new Texan. My wife ("Mrs. Crit," I oh-so imaginatively call her) is originally a Cleburne gal, and after I stole her away in a whirlwind romance straight out of a Danielle Steele novel, we lived in Kentucky together for 6 years before making the move.
I'm a grad student in History at Tarleton State University, and on the side I gleefully churn out short fiction for fun and profit. More fun than profit, but that's the nature of the business. Three and a half cents a word is...uhh...well, is about what it's cracked up to be, really. Any time your wage is measured in "half cents" you know you're not gonna get rich.
I've played wargames and role playing games for a goodly chunk of my life, and in the last few years I've started writing fiction and sourcebook material for several of those game companies. The upside for me is that it beats the heck out of having a real job (I consider graduate school my top priority, career-wise), and that it's fun to get paid -- even just a little -- for something that's as awesome as telling a cool story.
So, anyways, there I am. The stage is set. Crit is a 33 year old grad student, married, who's a first-time home owner, an on-the-budget firearm enthusiast, a new motorcycle rider, the dad to three "dog-ters" (see? Dogs mixed with daughters, because all three dogs are girls, get it? Clever!), and a fairly regular poster here at Glocktalk.
Origin story's done, I figure.
And now it's just a matter of looking around the room and seeing what'll catch my eye and make me wanna write up a blog entry about it.
